Default So, 3x fixed power or 3x9 variable

I will be putting a scope on my sport but am now not sure which way to go. I was all set to install a Nikon 3x 32mm but there is some question regarding the front sight. Apparantly above 3x the front sight disappears but can be seen (although just barely) at 3x or below. Also, since the price is not that much different cost isn't important in this case. I'd hate to get a fixed 3x and later feel like I should have gotten "more" scope. I'd also hate to get the 3x9 and later decide i wish I had a smaller scope. I don't walk around in the woods with it and 100% of my shooting is target related. Field of view between the two scopes is almost identical at 3x as is eye relief. I am not familiar with either of the reticles so I can't make a decision based on that. I can say that probably 90% of my shooting will be at less than 100 yards. Of course with target shooting group size and placement is pretty much everything. While I have been an avid pistol shooter and competitor for some time this is my first rifle in years. I would sure appreciate some advice and even random opinions on this. I'll be taking the long drive to Cabela's this weekend and need to decide by then. Thanks.

3x32 on a sport with sufficiently high mounts is GTG.

Just installed the Nikon 3x32 on mine. Its perfect for up to 100 yards. And more of course. But I am very happy with it!

Well, how about neither? That's helpful I'm sure.

For the type of shooting you're going to do, and the type of gun is going to be on, I would seriously consider a red dot sight like an Aimpoint PRO. Targets still seem pretty small at 100 yards with a 3x, but with a red dot at least you get speed and both eyes open capabilities. A 3x scope isn't very versatile, in my opinion.

Variable power scopes are more useful for hunting type rifles, in my opinion, because hunting allows more time.

Nikon also makes a 2x-7x scope that is about the same size as the 3x fixed. This might be what you are looking for.

Thay also have a pretty nice 1x-4x, but you will have your front sight issue.

The Bushnell TRS-25 or Primary Arms micro red dots will work great also if you do end up going with a red dot.

sailor, I have both Nikon scopes and they are both really good. Since I am a lifelong hunter and scope user my vote is for the 3x9, especially since the price is not an issue. I think the Nikon scopes are a really good scope at an economical price. You will like the magnification power of the 3x9 when shooting at paper or other targets especially at 100 yards or more. I really liked the 3x scope until I bought the 3x9. The 3x is good but I really like the 3x9 better. I hope this helps.
