Aint that the truth M1 Grand uses a clip.
Bold won't lock back why not just put one round in the magazine (clip )at a time? You might be able to find the short magazines now. I think it would be easier then trying to drop the round in the chamber.

MidwayUSA has these 10rd, stainless steel models for $13.99.
I've put 200rds thru each of mine (range I frequent only allows 6rds per mag, that's why I bought them) and no FTF, bolt always locked back on last rd, and drop freely.
C Products Defense Mag AR-15 223 Remington 10-Round Orange Anti-Tilt
Only complaint was the floor plates were loose but remedied by tapping the mag's tabs ever so slightly with a hammer and punch. Cured.
Tonight, 12:00am, (9/3/13) Midway is gonna have a sale w/$20 off on most orders.
That might cover the shipping charges!!

Your best bet is to purchase a single shot follower from Brownell's and place it in one of your mags. Not only does it make loading singles easier, but the bolt will lock back.
If it is an issue of clearance on the bench, .44mag.com has both 5 and 10 round mags.

I have one and it works well. It allows me to load longer rounds than the cl...uh...magazine will accommodate.
And yes I have the appropriate tools to do this safely.

Aren't you always supposed to load from a mag so you extractor seats properly?

I just shot mine off a sled today with no mag and all i do is stick my fingers up in the magwell to help guide the bullet in from the top.
Plan on getting some shorter mags to make shooting of the bench or a sled easier.

I shot at least 50 rounds today without a mag and mine ejected the rounds every time....
Even steel cased.
