MP15 Sport
So beside the forward assist and the dust cover, what else had smith skimped on the sport compared to the original MP15.

M&P Rifles - Smith & Wesson
Read for yourself. BTW, what model of M&P15 are you referring to?

They didn't really skimp on the sport, its just a model offered that does not include some of the other options for those who feel they are not needed or do not want them.

I bought a sport and it is great. Ya it doesn't have the forward assist or dust cover but unless your in the desert or really going to be abusing it you really don't need it. Ive fired thousands of rounds through mine without one malfunction. Great gun for the price.

I can get the sport model for 600. That sound about right? Or can someone direct me to somewhere cheaper.

I picked up mine for right around $680 so I'd say that's a pretty darn good price.

Thats whats funny and a lot of people seem to forget. They freak out that your AR 15 does not have a dust cover while there is no semi auto pistol that has one either lol. As far as the forward assist it is nice to have but it is not needed to clear a round from a bad feed or ejection, you can still clear the round or seat it properly w/ out a forward assist.

True, the dust cover is not that big of a deal. Leaving it off allows S&W to offer the sport at a cheaper price. It's not a must have for me, but I do like the idea of the dust cover, simply because it's well known that AR15 type rifles run best with the bolt really well lubed. It's known that lube traps dust. So being able to cover up my well lubed bolt to keep dust away is nice.
People often bring up the pistol comparison, and that none of them have dust covers - but they don't have an exposed bolt either.

True, but I have never heard of a long list of problems with M&P Sports with issues caused by no dust cover either. If having an exposed bolt is not really causing issues for anyone then I suppose having a dust cover is not that big of a deal, especially here in Maine where the only sand you find is at a beach and I dont roll around in the dirt w/ my AR at this current time.

The first AR design from Armalite did not have a dust cover or FA. They were introduced because of the issues in Vietnam. Given the improvements of both the rifle and the ammo, neither are truly needed anymore. The same goes for running AR's wet. My Sport has no problem running dry and I've spent plenty of time in the badlands of north Wyoming with no issues caused by dust. A little dab will do ya when it comes to lube,

Saco here to be exact. Yeah I've been noticing more and more (Cabela's is like my second home) Got a bunch of American Eagle .223 for $8.99/20 last weekend. Kittery Trading Post has the same ammo for $11.99! Yikes..

I really like my m&p sport. I've built many "mil spec" rifles, but after the panic I picked up the sport for $650 OTD and I'm very pleased with it. It will eat any ammo I've fed it, it's accurate, reliable, and the fit/finish is great.

No chrome on the sport barrel. Neither the old or new twist ones. Unless someone has heard something I haven't they're treated the same.

Actually, S&W used a 1-8 twist(I believe they've went to 1-9 now) Melonite treated barrel for the first Sports with a 5R rifling which is a great combo for accuracy with 55-70+ grain bullets. I own one and it works well for me as a entry level AR.
$600 is a good price. Gives you more money for ammo. Before you spend a lot of money on gizmos, learn how to shoot the gun just as you receive it. It's addictive. I'm happy I re-load for it.
Good luck and safe shooting!

Ive never shopped at KTP b/c its just to far, Cabelas is far enough as it is even though my local walmart has been quite a reliable source as well. I tend to shoot more steel case in mine, I dont buy into all that *it will wear out your extractor BS*. Even if it did you can buy a whole new bolt for $60 so who cares lol, just the extractor itself is even cheaper.
Trying to find a local gun range so I can shoot the AR more often. I emailed one today but they do not have an out door range for rifles so the search continues.

The current price of a Sport is a steal in the AR field. S&W makes a great AR15. Concerned about the barrel lining, chrome or melonite? There are those, in the know, that will argue that melonite is actually stronger and slicker than chrome, thus won't wear out or corrode as soon...I am just saying. And I am of the school in this day and age that why pay for something that you don't need. Say it for the toys you want to add onto it. In this day and age (except maybe for living in the desert) you really don't need a forward assist or a dust cover. That is probably a $200 plus savings Go for it, get the Sport and enjoy it for a long, long time.

My M&P Sport, Garand, M1Carbine, 1911A1, SKS, and P226 do not have dust covers or FAs. They all work just fine.

Your M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, and SKS most certainly do have forward assist, as they have charging handles that are directly connected to the bolt. That is where the idea came from for the forward assist, as Stoner's original design did not include the forward assist.
On the AR-15, the charging handle moves independently from the bolt. Stoner's original intent was to use your thumb in the scallop of the bolt to assist the bolt forward if needed. If it took more pressure than that, then pull back on the charging handle and eject the round. The Army wanted something that could be pushed forward to force the bolt closed, like the action on the M1 Garand, M-14, etc, so the forward assist was added.

You're leaving out the fact that the reason the Army wanted the forward assist was that they were using **** powder In their ammo to cut cost which was gumming up weapons that were presented as "self cleaning". The foreword assist is a questionable solution to a self created problem.

Well, I guess I've always considered the charging handles on the Garand, M1 Carbine and SKS as a charging handle to pull back on and release to load a fresh round out of the magazine (M1 Carbine) or clip (Garand) and not a forward assist, but I see your point. The handle could be used to push a case into the chamber. Point taken. Thanks for the correction.

Thanks, My Garand was built post Korean War, so not very historic as Garands go, but well built and a great shooter.
I bought a Sport about 3 weeks ago. I am very impressed with the fit of all parts, particularly the upper to lower fit, and it even has a nice trigger. Many ARs have frankly pretty bad triggers compared to other rifles, even older US military rifles. With the heavier barrel than a typical M4 profile I think the Sport is one of the better balanced ARs I've handled.
I haven't shot my Sport yet as it had to go back to the Mothership for a finish problem under warranty. It looks like the Melonite on the barrel was scratched and scuffed when the FSB was installed. With the Melonite process I didn't think touching up was an option. Hopefully only a week or so more.

I remember seeing you around here a few times. I e-mailed a gun club close to me yesterday to see if they had an out door rifle range but they did not, to bad b/c they were really close to me. I really need to find a ranger somewhat close to me so I can shoot more often then I currently do

I believe you are correct. I am not a warfighter, I was of age during the Vietnam conflict and went to college instead of to war. As far as the dust cover goes, my M&P Sport works just fine without one. It has the 1/8 5R barrel and is accurate. I installed a 13" VTAC Troy floating handguard and all ambi controls (I am LH), MBUS gen 2 sights and I am good to go. Eventually a SSA trigger and an Aimpoint Pro and it will be even better. Right now I am using it to develop my gunhandling skills with the M4 weapon system. Shooting drills with the M&P15 Sport is great fun.

IMO, the cost cutting:
- Integral Trigger Guard - one less assembly operation
- No Forward Assist - less assembly, less part cost
- Heavy Barrel - no profile cuts in the barrel means less manufacturing cost
- Melonite Treated Barrel - less complicated manufacturing process
- Magpul Polymer Rear Sight - less expensive than metal
- Handguards - no heat shields

The only real things on that list that I think qualifies as skimping are the rear sight and the handguards. Of course changing things like that is part of the fun of owning an AR15.

I agree with you. The 15-Sport is great because it's a factory rifle that leaves lots of room for personalization. Mine definitely is proof.

Adams Arms Piston Kit
As an M&P Sport owner I thought I'd chime in here.
I'm a Vietnam vet who refused an M-16 in favor of an M-1 Carbine and have resisted purchasing any AR for the past 40-years. Instead, I chose a Saiga AK-47 (Saigas are Russian built) which has been a great rifle; wet, dry, clean, dirty... it has never failed to cycle or shoot. For those of you who don't know, the AK is a piston design which leaves the bolt and receiver much cleaner than the gas impingement AR system.
Well, the AR bug finally bit late last year! After much research, I decided a 1:8 twist was the ideal barrel to properly shoot both light and heavy rounds. Based upon price, availability, twist and all the accolades the Sport received here, I purchased mine last spring. It has the 1:8 twist and 5R barrel.
The first time I sighted in a scope (Leupold VX-R 2-7X 33) I shot three sets of 3-rounds, each. I'm almost 70 and not nearly as strong or steady as I once was. However, the target with nine rounds through it only had three jagged holes! Accurate? Unbelievably so!
I'm also the kind of guy who hates to put a dirty weapon away and, as much as I enjoyed that outing, I was hugely disappointed at how filthy the bolt and receiver were. After several more outings and the purchase of all the special tools to clean the bolt, carrier, etc., I decided to convert my Sport to a piston system. Since Adams Arms supplied the original S&W piston systems, I purchased their Gen II kit and had it installed by my LGS. Total cost was $400.00.
My AR now stays cleaner than my AK! Without the piston kit, I would have probably sold it. Now, it's like the perfect rifle!

After reading all the good reviews online, I purchased a Sport on Gunbroker yesterday. $599.99 shipped. This is my first AR, first long gun in fact. I am excited to receive it.

MP15 Sport
My 1:9 sport was shooting 3" groups at 100 yards off a rest today with 55gr wolf and a 3moa red dot. It is more accurate than my free floated 1:7 spikes upper by a good margin.

Im a pistol guy, have been for years but tried the Sport. Great weapon, lot of fun- Im not in the desert nor in combat- so some of the fixtures on the AR platform I dont need. The Sport - with a few additions- upgrade single stage trigger, magpul grip and stock- fits really well have a good time at the range! and please! dont use those lame zombie targets!
