Generally used at shooting ranges which do not allow lead ammunition. Could also be used where ever ricochets could be a problem such as where the ground is very rocky.

Home defense, where you don't want to endanger loved ones or neighbors in the next room or apartment.

I can think of a few situations where frangible ammo would be preferred:
  • Ranges that do not allow lead ammo
  • States that do not allow lead for hunting
  • Shooting situations when the risk of ricochet from a traditional projectile is high: shooting close range at steel, LE/MIL practice at shoot houses, certain HD situations.

Frangible ammo is generally geared towards varmint hunting. It is engineered to do 2 things:
- break apart and cause massive tissue damage
- a side effect of the above is it has less penetration

It's good for hunting things that you don't plan on eating, because of the large amount of tissue damage ruins the meat. So for things like coyote, ground hog, etc.

Works well as a home defense round because... well... you can imagine. An upper body hit is going to wreak havoc. Also, less penetration through walls on a miss, less likely to cause damage to unintended people/property. Although if you youtube videos of some frangible ammo, pieces of it have been shown to still go through several layers of sheet rock (wall board), 6+ IIRC. But that's to be expected. If you want it to penetrate an animal/person, it's going to penetrate walls.
