First day shooting the M&P 15
Had a blast. The thing is deadly accurate right out of the box. But after i did notice a little brass on the outside of the receiver, next to the ejection port. Is this normal? Or does something need to be adjusted?

My new M&P (and my first AR) only has about 100 rnds through it and I've noticed the same thing. At first I was concerned. Then I watched some slow-motion videos on YouTube of ARs cycling when fired and it looks like that post is to deflect the case.
From what I've read what seems to be most important in figuring out if things are ok is where the casings are landing. If it's generally 4:00 (back and to the right) then that's fine.

Perfectly normal. The brass deflector gets dinged by the ejecting brass.

As long as that's normal. Next noob question, can you over oil when cleaning? I just did my first strip and clean (minor clean). pulled the bolt carrier group apart, sprayed with a cleaner, wiped down, oiled and reassembled. I had a little trouble getting the bolt back in, so i applied a little more oil and a tiny bit of pressure and it went. It still felt kind of like it wasnt sliding back and fourth real smooth, could that be normal? I then wiped out the inside of the upper receiver and the charging handle. I placed a small dab of oil on the charging handle. Then, put it all back together

It may be more technique than an oiling issue if you experienced some difficulty inserting the charging handle and bolt carrier into the upper. You'll be a pro in no time. I apply a thin film onto the carrier with my finger....and a drop or two spread along the inside and outside of the charging handle.

If the oil splashes on your shooting glasses to the point that you can't see the target for the second shot, you've over lubed your AR. Other than that, it's pretty hard to over lube one. They like to be run wet.
Google it. You'll get pictures from a GI manual.

Ihad a lot of help from these folks with my questions on the same subjects. I also found youtube had quite few bolt/ carrier films and disasembly films set up for those of us new to this platform- one guy uses 10w/30- so I tried Mobil 1 and the for my new trigger I use the same grease I use on the ball joints and tie rod end on my TJ works slick!

Everyone has been a huge help. And I really do appreciate it.
My theory on keeping oiling was that I would rather have a bit too much than not enough and end up doing a little damage to the internals. It was hard enough getting it in NY state, so I assume parts will be difficult as well.
I couldn't get the bolt back into the bolt carrier for the life of me. I remember when I bought it and was taught how to disassemble that the fellow said something about the rings on the back of the bolt. Perhaps that was my problem. After a few tires I did get it to go in. Just had to apply a little more pressure than I expected. It's just like anything else that is new. You have an urge to baby it at first. I still don't know a ton about the platform and just don't want to break anything. I guess it may just be part of the learning curve. It still felt a little stiff after I finally got it back into the bolt carrier, and that concerns me a bit. Last thing I want is to finally get a chance to shoot it again (not a lot of space in the area) and have a failure. That would really put a damper on the day.
