Default Which M&P 15 do I have here?

I was looking for an entry level AR15 modern sporting rifle, and a local chain is selling a few different M&P 15's, but they don't say 'Sport' or 'T' or 'O' or anything. They had one model in the $850 range maybe the sport? It was a flat top, no iron site model. I saw this guy used for a little less. Not sure which model or 'trim level' or however S&W designates between their AR models.

It is 5.56, has a quad rail, a front sight post with a bayonet lug. Flip up rear sights. The rear sight and the quad rail both say M&P on them the rear sight also says "Troy industries". The stock is 4 position (3 usable positions, and 1 totally compressed position). It doesn't look like the bolt or the bolt area of the receiver are chrome, but the actual chamber seems to be a silver color. The barrel says 5.56 NATO 1/9. The gun is used like I said, but only the vertical grip pictured seems to be after market. It also came with a few PMags. Not sure what it would have cone with from the factory.

Anybody know what specific M&P 15 I have?

I believe all current models have 6 position. It is possible that earlier editions had 4 position receiver extensions, or it was changed out by previous owner.

Thanks for the info everybody. Until I hear different, I'm going to side with all of you and say it is a 15X. I did assume that there would be variations between model years, and S&W would only list the current specs, but I wanted to be sure before I just assumed. Now that we have verified what I have, I'll go off and do some more research, but if anybody would like to share their impressions/experience with the 15X in this thread, I would be glad to hear from you.

To give you some background, I'm very big into handguns (revolvers AND auto loaders. S&W's, CZ, Dan Wesson's, you name it), and I'm also enthusiastic about shotguns, but other than my Ruger 10/22, and my AK pattern rifle, I'm really not much of a rifle guy, but I had an urge to add a modern sporting AR15 style rifle to my collection to see what direction it might take me (I really hope I don't go rifle crazy like I've done in the past with handguns, because I really can't afford to be buying a new $1200 rifle every 3 days!). As they say "The journey of 1000 miles begins with the first step".

That looks like an X with the front rail they used when Troy was the supplier. I believe they switched to another supplier later for the rail. Sure looks like an older Troy quad rail to me but I may be mistaken.

You can always call S&W and give them your serial number. They will give you it's history and answer any questions you have.

The 15x was my first AR. It is a nice rifle and mine gave me no troubles and was very accurate new out of the box. I was happy until i bought a mid length gas AR and then a piston AR. I then sold it to a family member.

I had a chance to get out to the range yesterday. It's only a 20 yard indoor range, but I had a lot of fun shooting this AR. Way less recoil than my AK.

I shot some factory 5.56 that I bought and a few .223 reloads that I put together just to try my hand at reloading bottle neck rifle cartridges. It's a little more intense than reloading straight walled pistol rounds. They all fired great. I made a few test rounds with BL-C(2) and IMR 8208 XBR.

Welcome and congrats! S&W makes a great AR. Most share the same basic components but a few stray. The X is a very nice, basic AR. My first AR was a S&W and like you, I was just dabbling. I'm on my 4th build now so be prepared, it will become addicting.
