New Ar15 owner, SW MP15 Sport
Hi there everyone, I am going to be purchasing a SW mp15 sport rifle. I'm sure there's other threads on this subject but I can't see to find them. But here's my question.
When I get my sport mp15, I want to put optics on it, but I don't want the front iron site. Is there a way to remove that so I can have my optics without that in the view?
I know I may sound dumb, but I'm new the the rifle world and ar15 world.
I'll appreciate any help!

It can be removed and replaced with a low-profile gas block. If you don't have the right tools, either buy them and learn or get a gunsmith to do it.
Depending on your optic though, you may not see the front sight. If you put a rifle scope on it with 3x power, you won't see it.

First, what kind of optics? As mentioned, with a 3x or stronger scope, you won't see the front sight. With a red dot, you learn to ignore the sight. Shooting with both eyes open, I don't even notice it, unless I look for it.
Second, are you planning on putting a rail system on your Sport that would extend past your front sight post? If so, then you will need to either shave down the front post or replace it with a low profile gas block. That front sight isn't just a sight, the gas port in the barrel is under it. It is part of the path that the gas takes to get back to the bolt. I recommend shaving it down, vs replacing, as the front sight post gas block is pinned and is stronger.
If you do not plan to put a rail system on it and just want to shoot with optics, then I would recommend that you just buy the M&P 15 OR (Optics Ready). No front sight post to worry about... heck, no sights at all! Just mount your optic and you are good to go. You can add back up sights if you wish.

Best advice here, if you want to change out the gas block. If you want to get the tools for it and learn how to do it, make sure a gunsmith teaches you. Don't watch a YouTube video and figure you're good to go. I fix firearms all the time because of armchair gunsmiths' good intentions.
Here's another option: Remove the rear flip-up sight that came with your rifle and replace it with an A4 carry-handle rear sight.
Then, add a picatinny rail on top of the A4 carry handle.
Put scope on that, then you have both iron sights and scope.

No need for a rail on a carry handle, some scopes are designed to mount straight to the carry handle such as the Burris AR-332 or AR-536.

As mentioned, you either won't see the front sight at all if you use any kind of magnification or will barely see it if you use a red dot.
For the money, you can't beat the Sport so don't let the fact it has a front sight post bother you. For the money you save you can buy a red dot or scope.

Thanks for the info guys! I think I'll just leave the front sight on there with the optics. Not sure what style I'm gunna do yet, I'll test some red dots and some scopes out to find the one I like. Does anyone have preference on what is better use for quick target shooting? Red dot or scope?

For quick target acquisition and shooting, where a hit is a hit and grouping is not the goal, red dot. For precision shooting and trying to make one ragged hole, scope with magnification.

I am running a Leupold 3 X 9 and you cannot see the front sight. I am running weaver mounts with wing nuts that go right in front of the rear sight. I can remove the scope and use the iron sights and when I put the scope back on zero is maintained.

Red dot is definitely faster. I recommend a LaRue or Bobro if your going the qd route. I'm currently using a trijicon tr24 w/Bobro qd mount on my moe mid.I like to shoot irons so a qd mount that actually works and holds zero is important to me. A 1-4 or 1-6 scope with a illuminated reticle and 30mm tube is in my opinion the best all round optics choice for the ar15 platform. If your only shooting at closer distances then a red dot will be fine. The Bushnell trs-25 is a great red dot for the price and can be co-witnessed with the right mount. Congratulations on your new rifle.

Rear sight
A point if interest, I bought an early edition of the "Sport" and it came with a fixed sight rear that looked very much like the rear end of the carry handle. At first I was upset when I saw the newer ones had flip rear sights, but now I am not concerned at all. But I don't plan on adding any glass to it. Ofcourse I have an old weaver 4x that would probably work great. It is on my Mini-30 though. Oh well, I just wanted to tell about the early "Sports". JS. Papascull

For an irons only rifle, or perhaps even a red dot, I prefer that type of sight to the Magpul flip ups. I like having both windage and "elevation" adjustable at the rear sight, with a turn of the knob. I replaced my Magpul flip up with a Matech BUIS for the same reason. Went with the Matech simply because of weight. The Magpul went to my son's 15-22, and his fixed sight went to my CMMG .22. It is a little harder at first to pick up the dot through the fixed sight, but with practice, it becomes second nature and it insures a consistent cheek weld.

If I have to use an optic, I'll put up with folding back up sights. I'm with Cyphertext on the A2 style rear sights. I have an irons only rifle set up with a carry handle. Being able to adjust for both windage and elevation on the rear sight is a god send. I actually enjoy shooting irons more than with an optic.
