75grn Bullets w/1:9 twist barrel for Home Defense
Brand new owner of an M&P15 Sport. Got a sub $600 price from Grabagun here in TX. Have not used an AR type rifle since Army days in the 70's.
Looking for a home defense, CQC, hollow point round. Assume use would be at less than 100 meters. Research and consensus seem to point to something like a Hornady TAP .223 75grn BTHP or maybe a lower price alternative like Prvi Partizan .223 75grn BTHP Match ammo.
Other than questionable long range accuracy, would these rounds be suitable for this application using a 1 in 9 twist barrel that comes with the current version of the sport?
Thank you....

A Hordady 55gr V-Max or Z-Max round would come to mind.
Hornady Manufacturing Company :: Ammunition :: Rifle :: Choose by Caliber :: 223 Rem :: 223 Rem 55 gr Z-MAX™
IMO, 75gr is right on the edge of a what a 1:9 barrel can manage. Some barrels can, some can not. Best advice is to go get some inexpensive 75gr ammo to test in your rifle before committing to buying the expensive Hornady rounds.

For home defense distances, it is probably fine. If you are going to stay within 20 yards, I bet it would be accurate enough. I doubt it would keyhole at that short of distance, but the only way to tell is to get some and try it.

I think if I used an AR for home defense it would be 40 grain varmint bullets. Lots of shock & damage. Not as much penetration on walls.

Home defense for me is a full size pistol with every cheat on it: extended capacity mag, night sights, light, laser. I don't have the practice clearing a long gun within a residence. I also prefer to have the option of operating a firearm one handed to free up the other one.

I like the Hornady V-Max. I'm currently using the Z-Maxx because if it can stop a zombie, a human bg shouldn't be a problem. It was also $4 a box cheaper. It shoots good groups and has been 100% reliable for me. I've also had good results with Hornady Match 223 75gr bthp. At close ranges, almost any 223/556 bullet will be devastating.

The Hornady Match 75gr bthp states on the box that it's made for 1/9 barrels and faster. Congratulations on your new rifle and welcome to the forum.

+1 on that. the 75 grain bullets will most likely shoot well at close range but one must consider that the 75 grain bullets will penetrate very deeply. almost certainly through the human body and the next couple of walls. i would second the notion of the 40 grain varmit bullets or at most a 55 grain soft point.
hornady would be my first choice followed by federal loaded with speer tnt bullets.
