Default Red dot and front sight problem..

Hello all,
I have a m&p15 New Jersey legal with the front sight/gas block. My problem is I bought this

http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/c....aspx?a=691313

But the front sight is all in the way. I have been reading here for hours and can't seem to find a dot a tad bit higher than the front sight.

I have been looking at primary arms and like this one

https://www.primaryarms.com/Primary-.../pa-aasdg3.htm

But it looks like it mounts low. What can I do? Thanks.

That holo sight you have mounts really low. I can't imagine it being comfortable to shoot, unless you mount it on top of the carry handle, using a rail mount specifically for the carry handle. The front sight being in your field of vision is not a problem at all, just ignore it. The dot floats anyway, it does'nt have to be centered in the field, just put the dot on target, & press the trigger.

When using a red dot sight on a rifle with a fixed front sight base, the sight base will always be in your sight picture.

Through different mounts and risers, you can adjust how much of the sight base you will see. This is called co-witness. Most people will set up their red dot for either an absolute co-witness, which means the front sight post goes to about the center of the sight picture, or a lower 1/3 co-witness, where the sight post is only visible in the lower 1/3 of the sight picture.

With that said, you learn to ignore it. I don't even notice my front sight. When using a red dot, you shoot with both eyes open, and focus down range on the target. When doing this, the front sight does not interfere at all.

First, Welcome aboard! cyphertext pretty much covered it. As for the Primary Arms sight, when you order the sight, they generally give you an option for the mount, absolute co-witness, lower 1/3 co-witness, straight mount, cantilever mount, and different brands from inexpensive to high end super hootee. If the site doesn't offer those options, give them a call or e-mail them. They are very responsive to their customers needs. I looked at that sight, but opted for the 30mm as its' battery life is about 1000 hours on a single battery.

Good Luck and good shooting.

The Primary Arms. Optic you linked shows the below.

Features

Non-reflective, matte black finish
Included mount provides Lower 1/3rd Co-Witness with AR height sights.
Improved base is compatible with M4 style mounts and the Primary Arms Cantilever Riser
Parallax free past 50 yards!
10,000 hr battery life at medium setting
Super-crisp, daylight bright 3MOA red dot!
Optional KillFlash available.

------------------

As far as the sight you currently have.... There are a million identical to it all with different labels on them. They are about absolute cowitness. You won't find a riser low enough to raise the sight just a little. Lowest I have ever seen is .5in and it would raise it to the point where the sight body would block use of your iron sights. Mentioned above, you could use a see through carry handle but I would not suggest doing so because it raises the optic too high.

Get the PA red dot with the riser that it comes with. You'll be in good shape.

First I want to thank you all for your advice. it has helped me out a lot and understand what I was looking for. I went with this sight

https://www.primaryarms.com/Primary-...a30crgenii.htm

with the P/A cantilever mount with the 1/3 lower cowitness. I believe this is what I'm looking for.

Now I stare out the window waiting for the delivery truck. lol

Again thank you you guys.

Very good choice. That's the sight I was talking about. Actually put a few rounds down range with mine this afternoon. Not to put to fine a point on it, but if you're a bad guy, don't run, you'll just die tired. It was spot on. Once your iron sights are zeroed, adjust the red dot so it sets on the tip of the front sight post. You should be golden.

Good Luck and good shooting.

The only issue you may have is the front sight may appear too high in the red dot. You can then measure how much higher you need to mount the red dot, and get the correct sized riser, to mount the red dot on. I have done this for all my red dot scopes, as I like the co-witness to be in the lower part of the scope, for a 1/3 co-witness.
