Unusual m&p barrel?
Hey yall, now I know the 1/8 5R barrel is by no means rare.
But I dont see anyone around with a 14.5 inch 1/8 5r, did smith and wesson make these or was mine chopped? My muzzle device brings it to about 16.5 total length (Pinned I suspect)
I snagged a "smithenfranken" build solely from smith parts at a gun show (for a very good price)
Its a sport's lower, ORC upper, 14.5 1/85R barrel, and a m&p15 free floated hand guard. Love this thing to death! Burris e1 2-7 and 45 degree rails are on their way
Barrel looks long in these photos. Where the threads meet the A2 is 14.5 on the dot.

How are you measuring your barrel? Like you said, from the pics, it looks longer than a 14.5" barrel. At any rate, if it is a 14.5", 1/8 twist with 5R rifling, it was most likely cut back and had the muzzle device permanently attached. S&W didn't release one with that length from the factory that I am aware of.

If it is indeed brought up to 16"+ only by the flash hider, better make sure it is permanently attached -- as in welded. BATF an get nasty otherwise.

Cypher - Using a tape measurer from where the barrel meets the upper, to the threads/beginning of the flash suppressor. Definitely want to make sure Im pinned up, but cool to affirm the unique status of my smithy.
Pisgah - dont want big brother swooping down, definitely gonna confirm its pinned haha.
Thanks for the replies yall. Even for a "shorty" this thing is a tack driver

If it is a 9" rail it sure looks like a 16" barrel, just slightly under 18" with the flash hider? How long is the rail? Be Safe,

Hmm looks just like mine. Will need to measure when I get a chance. Mine has a 10" rail (too short for me. The barrel gets HOT lol don't ask how I know) I need a vert grip

So I kept thinking the same thing and remeasured with my hand guard off..
Its 15.5 inches..
17.5 total length with the 2 inch long muzzle attachment.
Definitely am not under measuring a 16 inch barrel, this is strange. Measuring from the bolt face to the end of the barrel.
I can post photos of the tape measurer on the barrel if anyone wants to see.
JaPes, rjFL - thanks!
Jeep - Good looks, I also have a 10 inch rail

What about the the barrel extension inside the upper - would that affect total length measurement?

The way the ATF measures barrel length is with bolt closed, they insert a rod from the muzzle end down the barrel, until it rests of the face of the bolt. They then mark the rod at the point that it is extending from the muzzle and remove it from the barrel. The distance between the end of the rod that was resting on the bolt face and the mark is the length of the barrel.
If you have a removable muzzle device, it would need to be removed for the measurement.
