Smile Great day!! First time shooting 15 sport.

Picked up my 15 sport 5.56 yesterday and took it to the my indoor range this morning. (I go every sat.) I figured I'd shoot with just the iron sights and not transfer a red dot or nc star tac 3 scope and boy was I impressed. Yes I know only 25 yards, but I've only been shooting 5 months. Rested my elbows on the table focused on front sight and wow, first group of three within .500 inches of each other 2 inches low and a little to the right. After some adjusting of sights and with a dozen more rounds I was right at bulls eye within a 2 inch group. That's great for me I'm a little shaky. I shoot this gun way better then my MP 1522. Could that be because of the 22lr not being very accurate. My range master was impressed and I told him I'm not a very good shot. He said your better then you think, plus your shooting a nice gun. Man was I excited. I highly recommend this gun for quality and price it can't be beat. To those who know my previous posts I purchased this rifle by turning in about $500 in scrap metal plus some $. Yes a great day, the smell of gun powder in the morning. Added picture, this is new target after sighting in.

Yeah, that's insufficient. We'll be needin' pics of that new gun too!

Good shooting. I don't know about you, but once I've fired a few rounds out of any semi-auto, I start having too much fun to really concentrate on being super accurate.

For adjusting your sights, get a set of these:

They're not expensive and are necessary for getting the sights right.

Welcome to the rabbit hole! Now start adding those accessories...

In .22 LR rifles accuracy of ammo is a high variable. Unfortunately, today we can't just go out and buy a small box of each kind available for $20 or less and find which brand and weight works best. Geoff Who remembers the good old days.

Congrats on the M&P 15 Sport. I bought an early one with the A2 type iron sight in 2011. When I sighted at 50yds my x group rounds were touching.
I used it in IDPA 3 gun and it was awesome, fast and accurate from in close out to 200yds.
1/8 twist does good with 55gr bullets but they love 62`s.
Have fun!
Jim

I feel the same about my M15 it makes a bad shooter look good I shoot reloaded ammo with 52 gr Hornady Vmax bullets on the 50 yd range and have never been outside the 4"ring on the target using the stock sights. One day at the range I was outshooting a member shooting a Sig Sauer SSG 3000 24"barrel with a scope about one third the length of the gun

I have the same shooting bag I fill it with Kitty litter its a lot lighter than sand, as long as there are no cats on the range

The Sport now comes with a 1/9 twist. S&W tech reccomends 68gr max to stay stable.

I took my SWaMPy AR-15 Sport to the range for the first time this afternoon. FYI 25 meters equals 82 feet and 1/4 inch.
Lessons learned:
My 64 year old eyes did NOT like the small peep sight, I went to the large ghost ring.
I was a much better shot when I was 22, despite the web gear and jumping in and out of a hole.
25 meters is a lot longer now days.
I kept all my shots on the standard 8.5 x 11 paper, on which I printed the standard 25 meter zero target.
I did not put the required five rounds into the circle..we have high standards here in FL. I did manage two out of three, but my breathing needs work.
I really need an optic...now which one.
The A2 style grip is skinny as described.
I had to get back into the rhythm of AR procedure, it took about 5, 3 shot groups.
The factory sights work well enough as installed, but I couldn't tighten the groups up enough to feel good about the 300 meter shot, much less the 460.

Geoff
Who is very pleased and looking for a new more AR carbine case. The Sport is 33" long with the stock closed.

No problem, but we need some data...

What's your $$$ ceiling? (More is better)
What is the main use for your AR? (Hunting, Target shooting, etc.)
What is the furthest distance you expect to shoot?

Under $380, the going price of an Eotech 512 locally.
Main use Light Target shooting, my knees are not up for a 3 gun competition.
Distance: At least a few rounds at 460 meters, but mostly 300 yards and less.

I am not really liking the Red Dots etc. I have a Bushnell Trophy 1x28 on my Mini-riot gun for small riots.

I am leaning toward the moderate power, moderate price Variable scopes, 1-4x, 2-7x, 3-9x. I would like an illuminated reticle.

Under consideration:
Nikon P-223 type
Bushnell AR optics 1-4x 24 FFP Illum BDC w/mount Opticsplanet $330
Weaver Kaspa 1.5-6x32mm 30mm Tactical Illum Ballistic-x Opticsplanet $185

Geoff
Who also notes earplugs are better than muffs for a good cheek stock weld.

That's a good list to work from.

I have one of these on my AR rifle: Leatherwood Hi-Lux CMR Rifle Scope 30mm Tube 1-4x 24mm Illuminated

It has all the features you're looking for, including price. I think there are better scopes out there, but not at this price.

The maximum magnification is 4x and that's plenty out to 100 yards. It's OK at 200 and not as much as I'd like at 300. Compromises must be made though. If you're going to use it at a 3 gun match, you'll want the 1x as well.

A 3-9x40 would be better for the long ranges, but will leave you wanting a larger field of view at close range.
