Default Does anyone own the M&P15 Sport?

I've been reading and watching reviews on this one and I'm REALLY tempted to get one. Most say it's the best entry level AR for the money but, none of my LGS's have one so I'd have to order it blind without having handled one.

Any pro's or cons to this model?

I just bought mine on sale and due to work and weather have been unable to get to the range. Most annoying.
I did the research and am very pleased with the result a good light weight carbine. Now all I need is a 20 round Pmag for the bench. and a couple of quiet hours at the range.

Who notes the sale price was $599.99, good in NE FL 2014

I own one, it was my first M4 style carbine. Glad I bought it. Paid $650 about 3 years ago. Glad it did not have a FA. Love the trigger guard. Never missed the dust cover. I wish they would offer a OR Sport without the front sight post. It is a great carbine. Mine has over 1,000 rounds, no issues. I have changed out/upgraded serveral parts. Would do it again.

Any pro's or cons to this model?
If you've visited the picture thread, you've probably seen 15-Sports and not realized it. The pro's and cons are summed up in the picture of my rifle.

Pro: It functions the same as any other AR-15. It is compatible with all aftermarket parts. The omission of a forward assist and dust cover has not been detrimental in all of my shooting. Out of the box, the 15-Sport is the perfect keep-it-simple-stupid, lightweight AR-15. Mount a Primary Arms Microdot and a simple 2-point sling and you're good to go. The 15-Sport's offers one of the best values.

Con: It is compatible with all aftermarket parts. I love my 15-Sport, but part of me regrets modifying it. I turned the perfect keep-it-simple-stupid rifle into something else. If you are even thinking of modifying the 15-Sport beyond a sling and optic, think about what you want the end result to be. Buy a rifle that is factory equipped with as many of the features and parts as your budget allows. It ends up being less expensive over the long run.

Other things you'll encounter...

The early production 15-Sports are factory equipped with a 1:8 5R barrel. The current production 15-Sports are factory equipped with a 1:9. While we like to discuss the theoretical differences, there isn't really a practical difference.

The 15-Sport is overgassed. While some see this as a negative, I see it as a positive. The slight overgassing means that the 15-Sport will function with all the different commercially available .223 and 5.56 ammunition. Mine has no issues cycling the least expensive Russian polymer coated steel case, bi-jacketed projectile ammo.

I have two AR-15's: the 15-Sport and a full-feature AR-15. I have not had to use the forward assist nor ever had to nudge the bolt into battery with my finger. For me, a forward assist is a "nice to have" not a "must have".

Take a look at these videos.

Thanks for the reply's folks. I'm actually glad it doesn't have a dust cover or forward assist. For what I'll be doing, I won't need either of them. I'm just glad to see it has a large ejection port. I've seen a few non-dust cover versions (not S&W) at Walmart, where the ejection port didn't look much larger than an empty shell.

I've already called one LGS and they said they can get me one for $630 OTD. I have 3 more I need to call so I can compare prices.

If you want to take a short drive in the country, call either Nathan or Luke at Nathan's Pawn and Jewlery in Chatsworth, GA. They gave me the besty deal (I could find at an LGS OR online. After all was said and done, transfer, tax, everything, they beat Buds and Cheaper Than Dirt.

It was well worth the drive from Jasper...and my in-laws live there so I go often anyway.

EDIT: Old fashioned Georgia folks...closed Sunday and Wednesday.

It is one of the most accurate out of the box AR's I have encountered, including a DDM4v7 and a Colt 6920! I really believe it is due to the Melonite treatment vs. a chrome lined bore.

I have 2 Sports, I was out at the range today and put another 200 downrange without problems. I shot 5.56 and .223 both 55 & 62 grain. The two guys who I shot with now both want sports. $630 is a good price for a gun in hand, better than a $600 gun that you have to look all over to get.
I've made the same changes to both Sports:
Put on the UGT American quad rail
VTAC sling
One I put the Bushnell Red Dot and on the other the Nikon P223 scope.

Were they 5.56mm? There is nothing "large" about the ejection port on the Sport. It is the standard size.

Got mine when It first came out. My first and only AR-15, has not given me any trouble, eats anything I feed it, and is more accurate than I am. Great Firearm!

Yep, lots of Sport guys here. The Sport is virtually the "everything you need , nothing you don't" rifle. There are many "Black Rifle" guys who see the Sport as a cheap entry level rifle with no forward assist and no dust cover. It is in fact an inexpensive gateway rifle leading to many fun adventures with none of the frustration of other "entry level rifles". I should clarify "inexpensive", as that pertains to getting one, after that you're on your own (although there are many here who are willing to draw you into their fantasies and support your habit once you're there).

Here's how my Sport has come to look.

Good Luck and good shooting.

^ Where's the 2-Stage trigger? Seems like a waste of perfectly good KNS Precision anti-rotation pins.

That's next on the list. The KNS pins fit the budget at the time, and we must have priorities. You know Troy Alpha, Lantac muzzle brake, Aimpoint (which should be home soon). The factory trigger I polished up has me covered for now.

Based on the title "does anyone own and M&P15 Sport", I thought this was some kind of a joke thread. Tons of people own them and they are fairly highly regarded. It seems like half of the posts in this section of the forum are "My new sport..." some days. It's bad enough that when I'm feeling grumpy I'm ready to suggest The M&P15 Sport get it's own sub-section (kinda like the 15-22) just so there is a place to talk about M&P15's that aren't a sport.

as to the original question: If you buy one, you'll be in good company.

The local gun store had them on sale this week for $559. It was everything I could do not to buy one. They actually ran out of stock by the time I got there, but were willing to special order one for that price. I still managed not to buy it.

I also managed to get out without buying an EOTech EXPS2-2 for $460. That's the best price I've seen anywhere. This store has a "no sales tax on optics" policy so that was the out the door price. Man that was hard to pass up.

I'm so proud of me.

CTD has it listed at $628.28 on their website... doesn't seem to be out of line for pricing.

That would be a fair price in a local gun shop. But there are lots of online shops with prices quite a bit lower.

Geeze, I sound like a salesman for Nathan's Pawn and Jewlery, but...

That's what I did, and they beat their own price.

First, I used the genie and got a list of stores within 50 miles along with what each store would charge, including transfer, tax...everything. Nathan's was the best price that way.

Then I called Nathan's and asked what the best out the door price they could give me was. Nathan called back in 10 minutes and gave me a price dramatically better than using the Gallery of Guns genie...then told me I could probably do better by buying from Bud's and having it shipped to Nathan's and just paying his ($20.00) transfer fee, so I contacted Bud's.

It turns out Nathan's out the door price beat Bud's by $20.00.

Nathan's Pawn and Jewlery in Chatsworth, GA...THE place for all things guns in north Georgia.

Yes and I mean comparatively. The ejection ports on the ones at Wally World looked downright small. They were also made by brands I've never even heard of and can't remember at the moment.

Those were NOT 5.56 they were .22 LR, some look so good they fooled me until I looked at the length of the ejection port.

AR15-22 s are better than a dedicated .22LR upper IMHO, cocking the hammer takes a bit more oomph than a LR cartridge can manage. I'm told a few manufacturers manage it, but I'm skeptical.

The big thing to remember is the Sport is Cheap in Price, NOT quality.

Agree. They are a local shop for me, and cheaper than the big box stores currently. Of course, their price changes with the market. I think their in store price may be cheaper, but haven't been over there in a while.

Not to derail this thread, but I am curious as to what you mean by AR15-22? Are you referring to the M&P 15-22, or just any .22lr in general made to look like an AR-15?

We have both, M&P 15-22 and a CMMG dedicated upper... both work extremely well. The conversion bolts cock the hammer back reliably as well. I have never experienced an issue with failure to cock the hammer back with any of them.

No...........they were not .22LR, they were .223. By "small", I mean narrow. The length was ok but, the width left something to be desired. Also, the metal around the ejection port was unnecessarily thick. In videos of the Sport, they show using your thumb or forefinger in the detent on the side of the bolt as a "forward assist". On the Wally World rifles I'm referring too, the ejection port looked barely wide enough to fit my pinky finger into.

Hamster, there is no difference in ejection port sizes between the different brands of rifles in 5.56. Everyone builds to the same standard dimensions today. The design of the rifle is modular... I can take my Sport upper, throw a BCM bolt in a DPMS carrier, put it in the Sport upper, and put the whole thing on a Colt lower. If ejection ports were different sizes, it would make it awfully difficult to buy the ejection port covers with the flags and other emblems on them.

Ok everybody..........just calm down. Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about or MAYBE, I'm going off the memory of a rifle I was looking at through glass and never actually put my hands on.

The ejection port "looked" small to me.............and the more I think about it, the brand may have been DPMS. The only hands on experience I have of anything that shoots 5.56, is a military issue M16 and that was over 25 years ago.

In any case, I've decided on the M&P 15 Sport. It's more than adequate for my needs and if I can get one for under $600, that suits me just fine.
I may or may not eventually get something like this for it but even this is a relatively inexpensive upgrade.

^The Magpul carbine length handguard + Magpul rail section + Magpul AFG Gen2.

Go for it. Just make sure your off hand / support hand & wrist are comfy with the angle of the AFG.

Those hand guards do come in different sizes, so make sure you get the right one!

If you want just a basic, reliable AR-15 to shoot, you won't go wrong with the Sport. I think it is a good way to go, especially for under $600.

Any pro's or cons to this model?
As you can see there are many MP15 owners around here.

I'm a newbie to AR's. After much research, I bought an MP15 and have been completely satisfied.

Pros:
Inexpensive (bought mine for $604)
Ready to go right out of the box.
Modifiable (if you wish)
Accurate, makes a newbie like me look like I know what I'm doing! ha!
Relatively light (if toting it around is part of your use)
Eats up any ammo. Even the cheap steel cased Russian stuff.

Cons:
Makes your wallet thinner because it's so fun to shoot, you'll be buying ammo by the cases!!!

I'm sure I have over 500rds through mine since I bought it in Feb. Anytime I'm in Wally World I always pick up ammo and if I can get friends to go in, we buy a case or 2 online!

I paid $579 plus $5.99 shipping for mine from Grabagun three months ago. They now have it listed for $566 plus $5.99 shipping.

Just posted this thread about it the other day:

Finally got to shoot my new M&P Sport

Great value rifle and it's pretty darn neat. My first AR and was pleased with the build quality & accuracy.

I bought mine from grabagun as well. I paid $599 a while back. I think so highly of mine I want to buy another considering how low the prices are.

Who notes the sale price was $599.99, good in NE FL 2014
We probably got ours at the same place. Just seemed like too good of a deal to pass up. I think that I may just leave mine stock. Although, I have been considering getting a "Daniels Defense" back up rear metal sight.

Bought mine last weekend during a big sale, I was actually there to buy 5.56 ammo. I think the store did a bait and switch with the ammo. 2000 green tips, for $449, was the best I've seen... and of course it didn't happen. They claimed the order didn't come in and course, no rain checks.

However, my wife did goad me into buying a Sport. I later discovered, she actually thought it would become hers (LMAO! Not a chance). I pick it up this Monday and already have pretty much all the upgrades I want/need.

Have Magpul MOE handguard and pistol grip. Elzetta A2 front sight tactical light mount w/ Streamlight Polytac, Vortex Strikefire... plus a couple other odds and ends.

Did a lot of homework, before I bought it. It wasn't an impulse buy, though it comes across that way... I had plans. The sale, extra money from no ammo... just sealed the deal. The Sport, repeatedly came out in top of my criteria... First and foremost, is K.I.S.S. Other things, such as; warranty, reputation, actual field reports. When I discovered, some LE departments are actually purchasing them, that was a big plus. I own an XD, which has a similar process to Melonite, that helped, since I love that gun.

No forward assist? Thank you, S&W! No dust cover? This isn't Kandahar. Besides, I don't run my guns dry.

I get more excited and firm in my belief, I bought the right gun, as the day approaches.

I own one, but It is not much of a Sport as of today. Speaking for myself you might find that out if and when you get one. As for a AR it is well worth the money, I could not be happier with mine. If you do decide to buy one welcome to the Sport family.

I've had my Sport for 2 yrs now. Bought it NIB from a GS listed on GB. It was CA compliant. Other than putting ammo through it, the only thing I've done to it was change out the bullet button, replaced the handguard with a Magpul, added 3 30 rnd magazines(it came with one 10 rnd), a sling and bought a soft case for it. The only other thing I'll be adding is a red dot and been looking at the Primary Arms. Not in a rush as all the Sport is for fun at the range. But even through the clamity of the past few months, I never gave it a thought to part with my Sport even though I had a lot of offers for it.

Nice rifle.

The best gun, is the gun you own, know and setup the way you like. Within reason, of course. We all know there's tactical and tacticool. Though, being a Mini-14 owner and lover, I'm sure I'll take a ding around here, on that front.

Oh, I also bought the Sport, for a HD setup. It's the perfect little carbine, for the home owner/renter. Very lightweight, reliable, accurate. You can throw a light and/or laser on there and confidently know, you're well-armed. My personal preference is my Remington 870. That's what I primarily trained with, ship's security and Visit, Board, Search and Seizure. Which is the reason I hold such strong and sometimes differing opinions on CQB weapons. Our training was basic Sweep and Clear (I don't want to come off as SWAT. lol). Being on steel deck, bulkheads, overheads and 3' - 4' corridors gives you a different perspective, of Close Quarters. Also, while just basic in our training/skills, it was very frequent and repetitive. I'm a good guy to have backing you up, that's for sure.

Can't wait to join you guys, heck, just getting to hold it. This 10 day (11 in this case, they're closed tomorrow)... is more likely to make someone go insane. Haha... ha. Ha ha muahaha. Hahahmuawahahahaha. Ha. Ha. Ha!

I have the Primary Arms fixed base microdot. Love it! Though, my Sport is getting my Vortex Strikefire. You should look at them and the SPARC, or SPARC II, also. All, excellent optics. Though Vortex has an industry standard warranty. Lifetime, transferable and pretty much, no questions asked. You send it to them, with shipping costs, they fix it, or send you a new one. They swapped out my red/green dot for a red dot only, just because I didn't like it. They get stellar reviews along with the PA.

IMO, the Primary Arms microdot is the best of the budget dots out there for $99.

*I can't believe I'm going to say this...I used to hate it when people said this until I learned my lesson the hard way...*

I looked up the Vortex Strikefire and SPARC 1 & 2. They're priced between $100 - $200. Again, just my opinion but those aren't that big of a step up from the Primary Arms to justify the price.

I'd save that $100 to $200, and save more until December when EoTech runs their annual rebate program and retailers hold holiday sales. If the EoTech isn't your thing, then wait for the same holiday time to get a sale on an Aimpoint.

I own both. Yeah, they are. The PA is a good, solid build. The Vortex, is a little better.

The warranty is also a big plus. Anyone that has dealt with Vortex, can tell you that.

Just an opinion. I love my PA, which is why its on my Mini. I know some people don't like them, but I love the 2 MOA dot. Though, the dot on the Vortex is more round and crisper... the PA has a slight ghosting of the LED on bright settings. The Vortex mounts are also superior, holding zero and more options on them.

EDIT: Here's some pics of the two optics. I wanted to run the Vortex rear mount and put a light up front, scout mount. However, I really wanted that lower 1/3 co-witness and so far, I'm the only one I know that's pulled it off, with a 582 series Mini. The iron sights sit too low, but as you can see in the pic... it works. Its a, reliable, accurate and fun rifle to shoot, in this setup, so I'm leaving it as is. But, as I was saying... in my opinion, the build, warranty, mounting options, etc of the Vortex are superior and certainly worth the money.

I bought a Sport from Kentucky Gun Co last October without seeing one first. But I previously had a rifle length AR so I pretty much knew what to expect as far as handling. The question was whether the Sport would function 100% and be accurate. I was not disappointed.

I've already called one LGS and they said they can get me one for $630 OTD. I have 3 more I need to call so I can compare prices.
Kygunco.com has them on sale for $539, just took del of mine last Thursday, interstingly enough it was the 1/8 twist version
