If your goal is group size shooting from a supported position go with more magnification. If you are shooting off hand 4x is about max.

The 3-9 for long distance, but the 1-4 is better for all around use.
I made my longest shot on a game animal with a 1.5-5 set a 1.5 at 400+ yards. Sometimes we forget that scopes work by placing the aiming point and target in one plane and not so much by magnifying our target.

I'm with C__Phil on this one...... 300yds calls for a good target scope for tiny holes in paper........... a lot of shooters would recommend at least 18x and up........ at 300yds with a 4X the cross-hairs will cover (guessing here) 4-6 inches......

Bam Bam,
The scope the OP is getting does not have cross hairs. It has an illuminated upside down horseshoe at the bottom opening of the horseshoe, it has a vertical line with small horizontal lines. If you zero at 100 yards with the top horizontal line, then you will not need to make any knob adjustments when you go out to 200-500 yards. For 200 yards, just put the second horizontal line in the middle of the target, for 300 yards, the third line etc. I have my Bushnell (the same one the OP is getting) zeroed in at 50 yards. I have not found a need to turn on the illumination yet. I am not a rifle shooter (just started getting into rifles) but with this scope I can shoot out the center circle (1.25" diameter) on a 10"x11" target. BTW, I put the scope on a M&P VTACH II AR 15.

AG....... I looked up the scope after I wrote my post........
It looks to be more of a "low end " ($204 at optic planet) tactical scope than a scope intended to punch small holes in paper at 100-300 yards.
Looking at the pictures on Bushnell's websight I'm guessing the "dot" is a 2 mil dot (covers 2" at 100 yds)....... so 4" at 200 and 6" at 300
Looks like a nice scope ..... but maybe not the best choice "to try for good groups"
Just got the Trophy XLT 1-4x24 for my Ruger mini-14...... my semi-auto utility rifle.....cross hairs with illuminated dot........ if I could hunt with a semi in Pa. it would be OK for groundhogs and Coyotes out to maybe 150-200....... not mounted yet...... I like my Aimpoints and wanted to try an illuminated 4x scope for dusk and dawn.

Right. I think a lot of folks get torn between what is best suited for a battle rifle they just bought and what is best suited for how they want to shoot.

Me, I think the Leupold 6X with thin Duplex Reticule is a good compromise for what Jeff wants. I used a K6 Weaver on my M16A1 in Vietnam and it worked great. I could make longer shots and it worked well with the iron sights at close range. Sometime I tell the story of when I shot a NVA Officer on his Wedding Day with the gun at about 400 yards. Some might say I did him a favor in the long run.

For good groups at long(er) distances the Bushnell isn't the best choice. You want a higher power magnification scope. I would have done with a 4-12 power scope, or higher, than either of the ones you're looking at.
