Brownells, Midway USA, Palmetto State Armory.... pretty much anywhere that sells AR-15 parts.
Just make sure that you get a receiver extension (buffer tube) that is "mil-spec" dimensions, so that your current stock will fit.

My S&W buffer tube is 7 1/4".
Is it safe to say all AR-15 mil spec 6-position carbine buffer tubes are the same, apart from the type of metal and the processing?

It is safe to say that if it is labeled as "mil-spec" that at least the dimensions will be the same as what you currently have, and your stock will fit. It may or may not be made from the same materials.
The commercial spec extension will also fit your rifle, just your current stock will not fit correctly.

yes thank you for taking the time to respond...I am going to try and de-bugger up my tube possibly with a small file, but i am not going to pursue this from S&W since p.25 of the manuals says I should be publicaly flogged for doing anything to my rifle. if I fail at the attempt to fix this i will follow these guidelines for a replacement: Difference Between AR-15 Buffer Tubes

Just order the Mil-Spec buffer tube from Brownell's, and matching castle nut. You can spend more, but you really don't need to for a gen purpose AR.

I was going to warn you about shooting springs and detents all over the room but you seem to be ok. The Brownells info by 78staff is good as they sell quality parts that would be compatible wit your Sport. Good shooting.

I'm going to update my suggestion, as I noticed the low cost Castle nut from Brownells (actually DPMS) doesn't have notches for staking. For a few dollars more though the Colt does. I actually just ordered it and the POF receiver tube, which is higher priced that the Brownells tube, but it's anti-tilt and has tangs to keep it from spinning so I decided to check it out. Normally though I would just order the Brownells tube, actually I probably will order one now as a spare anyway as I did notice some galling on one of mine when stripping the lower down.
