Default Likely a rather noob question, but...

From the topic "Finally got to the range," and I suspect I know what the answer might be, but...

What is "mag dumping?"
I'm presuming it's having several mags ready to go, and going through them as fast as you safely can?

If that's the case, then is it "bad" for the rifle? I tend to go to the range with 4x 30rd mags, and while I don't mag dump, I do tend to go through them relatively quickly (as in, I can get through them, including switching to fresh targets in ~30 minutes)
Obviously, the barrel gets a bit "toasty" after this...

Thanks,
Jason

Not a problem. But there is a difference between mag dumps and fast. Mag dumps are more like suppressive fire, shoot fast as possible, in the general area, at the cost of accuracy. Shooting fast and accurate is not the same thing. Look at it this way. When Lucky gunner did their steel case ammo test they were doing mag dumps and it took just under 10k rounds of consistent mag dumps to start seeing problems

I know guys who can make mag dumps sound like full auto. I know of only one guy who can do mag dumps and still be accurate

They were so much more fun when I could select full rock and roll. There shot burst was good but not like a full 30 round mag on full auto.

Mag dump typically refers to jerking on the trigger as fast as the operator is able until the magazine is empty. The operator typically has a grin on his face, and when done looks around to see if others are impressed.

Heat is the enemy of barrel steel. Only you can decide if you want to abuse your rifle by doing mag dumps. If you can't hold on to the barrel, it's too hot and you need to take a break.

When I shot competitively, most barrels were replaced between 3000 and 5000 rounds, and nobody did mag dumps. I suspect most posters on this forum would have still been happy with the accuracy at that point, but they were replaced when they would no longer shoot to call.

That's one of the reasons I never buy used unless I know the shooter and that can still be iffy too.

To me, a guy who squeezes off all the rounds in his magazine as fast as he can is just spraying and praying...not impressed. Anyone can do that.

The guy who can shoot one hole groups, he's the guy I want on my side when the chips are down..... accuracy beats spraying the countyside any day. I'm impressed by real shooters. Not everyone can be a marksman.

To wear out a barrel doing mag dumps you'd need a lot of heat for a long sustained time. 60 rounds ain't gonna do it. I don't know of anyone who has that much ammo to burn through.

Yeah, it would take more free time and money for ammo to wear out a gun then the average person has. To the op, you can shoot and reload your 4 30 round mags as fast as you want and not hurt your rifle, although there is no real purpose for it other than fun. Take a look at some youtube vidoes of full auto guns or even slide fire stocks and people shooting 100 round drums through them in seconds, just to get an idea of what they are capable of taking.

I would love to do more mag dumps, but I don't want to re-mortgage the house.

They'll take it ok. But those are also the guys that have targets that look like they were hit with a shotgun past 100-200 yards. Lucky if they can even keep them on the paper at 300. ...then complain it's a junk gun.

They were a lot more fun when the Navy was paying for the ammo. On full auto you could have the 30th round out the barrel before the first case hit the ground.

That and you could turn it in for a new one when you cooked the barrel to.

The ones the marines issued us Navy guys in GTMO were turned in before I think. The 1911s rattled even in battery.

No...it's the sound of wasting money.

Magazine "dumps" with a semi-auto rifle are stupid. I can pick my nose faster and it's way more fun.

Mag "dumps" with a full-auto rifle are stimulating - for about 5 seconds.

Either way...a huge waste of ammo and money.

Nice to know I'm not doing something like mag dumps.

Now to work on getting the rifle better sighted in at the end of the range I go to (it's an indoor range, 25m)

BTW, when I do go "fast" through a mag, usually at about 30ft, I'm managing about a 3" group. I need more time with the rifle...

How quickly anyone dumps is personal preference. Some like to push hard to put out the most volume as fast as possible. Some like to take their time to get the most out of a dump. Personally, I'm not slow or fast. I take my time, but not too much time.
