It really is a lot of fun building up an AR15 platform rifle. I've done a couple. What I've found is they become a bit too heavy when I'm done. . .especially the Colt M4 SOCOM. When it's time to just grab one and go it always turns out to be my little S&W M&P AR15 just the way it came out of the box. About 6 pounds. At that weight it's like a handgun to me and I like that.

SO true, about the weight. I did buy the elzetta mount that has the quick release thumb screw so I can take the flashlight out easily. Which is what I do. I only have the light in when the rifle is at home stored away with a couple loaded mags nearby. For my circumstances, the light would only be used in home defense at this point.

Next project is to finish up my SKS bullpup conversion. Just need to settle on an optic (probably a RDS) and get the barrel threaded and stick a flash suppressor (or some other muzzle device) on it. Also buy some folding BUIS.

Firearm projects really are fun.

No joke! I went almost a year without building one. I don't think I can do that again. I do find that each one gets lighter and lighter and takes fewer parts. My last one, a .458 SOCOM, only hits the scales at 7 lbs. Pretty much bare bones:Ace skeleton stock, 13.5 FF rail, and an EOTech.

The weight adds up pretty quickly. I have pretty much the same set up only use a Burris AR332. My light (Streamlight) is also on QD mount.

Now you are ready for a True Build. Because it seems all you have done is customize and existing rifle. The fun really starts when you build one from scratch. BTW, just finished a 300 Blackout and it's the second AR I've done from scratch. It's also my second AR, meaning I've never purchased one already assembled. With a scope mounted the best accuracy I've observed is 3/4 inch at 100 yards with a handload featuring a 125 grain Hornady Ballistic Tip and a near starting charge of H110. Built it to be a lighter weight Carbine and with flip up iron sights it scales in at 7 lbs, 5 ounces. Also built it with a pistol length gas system on a 16 inch barrel and installed an adjustable gas block to allow me to tune the gas feed to the load. As a result of doing this I've discovered that most AR's are WAY over gassed and plan on installing an adjustable gas block on my precision 223 build. Because with the gas tune to the point of reliable function for locking hte bolt back it is a cleaner shooting rifle be a factor of 10 by my estimate. First time out with the 300 Blackout I ran 90 rounds downrange and when I pulled the bolt carrier for it's first cleaning it looked like no more than 2 or 3 rounds had been run in the rifle. Below is the component list and if you start looking at the prices you'll see I didn't try to scrimp on what I consider key components. Because I've learned over the years that money spent going "cheap" is money flushed down the toilet.

Component list. Barrel is a Stainless Wilson Combat blank machined for 300 BLK by a local dealer with a Pistol length gas system. Sights are AIM flip up. Handguard is a Gibbz Arms mid length ultra light full float. Gas Block, Syrac Ordinance Adjustable stainless clamp on. Upper and lower receiver are Detroit Gun Works. Bolt Carrier, Spikes Tactical NIB. Trigger, Timney 3 lbs. single state drop in. Buffer tube, DPMS Carbine Mil Spec. Stock, Magpul ACS-L. Lower Receiver assembly kit, CMMG Builders Kit without trigger group. Upper receiver kit, DPMS. Handgrip, Hogue finger groove. Flash Hider was a 19 dollar cheapy picked up at a local gun show. Note, really would have like to do a 12 or 14.5 inch rifle but I have no intention of jumping through the hoops mandated for a SBR, so a 16 incher while a bit heavier is good enough to have fun with.

Done? What?? Are you insane??? No low profile gas block? No free float forearm? No lithium-iron-argon-laser-microprossor-controlled-1-24x sighting device?

Come on man, there's a lot more to life than just a rifle.

Once you "Do" finish a build, It's time to go buy another rifle and start over again. The Arms industry needs your support.

I like it just fine. It's the Troy drop in battle rail custom for the M&P15 with "Military & Police" on one side and "Smith & Wesson M&P" on the other. The AFG and rail covers make it comfortable and ergonomic for me.

If I were building an AR from scratch it's not the quad rail I would choose, but it's one part I will never replace. I'm really attached to the M&P markings on it for some reason.

The direction of handguards has seemed to go in a new direction from quad rails. The latest and greatest are slimmer, round, and designed to attach rails only where you want/need them. I like the look of the quad rail, same as how I like the look of the traditional A2 front sight post/gas block combo.

Good luck finding something you like. Some people spend enough to buy an entire entry level AR15 on their handguard/rails set up never mind actual attachments. Or you could spend $30.

Have fun!
