Default Accuracy of the M&P 15 Sport

I just recently bought myself an M&P 15 Sport and when I was doing my research on all the different choices I found it very difficult to find very many accuracy reports, meaning I found a lot of threads that had people rapid firing at 30 yards, but not many people were trying to shoot groups at 100+ yards. Well I figured I would let help anyone else out who is looking for that information and tell them my results.

My setup: Bone stock as far as the internals of the gun, other than that I have all Magpul furniture. The Scope I mounted is a no-name Tasco scope, very cheap and came with a muzzle-loader I bought. The rings I used are some cheap UTG quick disconnect high profile rings I got on amazon.com for $25.

As far as the accuracy goes I managed groups with this setup of about 1 inch at 125 yards. My best group was a three shot group at about .75 inches with two of the bullets in the same hole. Keep in mind I was using cheap 55 grain Federal XM193 ammo.

Needless to say, this is a very very accurate gun, I'm sure it could shoot better groups without my jumpy trigger pulls. I wasn't able to go out beyond 125 yards yet, but when I do I will update this post.

Thanks for that. My gun is one of the earlier ones with 8-inch twist 5R barrel and while I can't say it shoots that good it just may. I've never had a telescope on it. Suffice to say your report doesn't surprise. I have spent more money on ARs that haven't shot as well as I'd bet mine does.

Yep they are accurate. I bought one with the 1-8 5R barrel and it's very accurate. I also have a Nikon P223 scope on it. I get 100yrd 3-5 shot groups a little less than 3/4" if I do my part, WHICH isn't often enough!!! Mine likes 62 grain rounds a lot. Federal 55gr M193's are very accurate also. But the 62gr beat them for accuracy.

Now that you mention that, I forgot to add that I have a post 2012 Sport, and therefore a 1 in 9 twist barrel. I have read mixed thing about the switch from 1 in 8 to 1 in 9 but so far I love it.

As for the XM193's, its all I have shot so far, I haven't yet tried the XM855 (62 grain bullets). I think the XM193's are a great little bullet, and apparently 55 grains matches perfectly with 1 in 9 twist. I haven't found much need for the steel core as these will punch through 5/8th inch cast iron and keep on going

(And for anyone who has looked at the UTG scope mounts and then turned elsewhere because they are cheap, I actually zeroed my scope, took it off to replace the handguard, and then put it back on... and it was a little better zeroed. Maybe I got lucky , but I like the mounts)

Ditto on the P223 scope, UTG rings and 62 gr bullets.
Suberb accuracy out of my early 1/8 5R Sport.

Did those rings allow you to use the permanent fixed front sight with no issues? I just purchased a sport 2 today and I want to get a scope for it. I have a few laying around including a leupold. I shoot in sporting rifle bench rest matches and reload but I don't expect this rifle to match my 700 bdl in 222 rem. I am curious what I can wring out of it accuracy wise.

My Sport`s A2 rear sight had to be removed to mount the P 223 with the UTG high rings. I dont mind though because if I swap back either way the zero holds. The front sight showed no signs of interference 3x to 9x.

I bought my MP15 for HD so I wasn't concerned with 100 yard shots so I have it sighted in at 25 yards.

As long the ammo is at least 62 grains it's very accurate. I have the 1:9 twist.

I just sold my 2013 Sport with a 1:9 barrel but it was very accurate for me. I would get slightly larger groups than JeepsterBud, but that is probably due to my lack of skill. There was nothing wrong with my Sport, I just prefer to shoot my 20" A1 instead.

I've found the same thing- even though it's a 1:9, it seems to like the heavier bullets. Can't group worth a damn with certain 55grs like AE.

I have a 1:9 barrel. I shoot reloads out of mine.

It hates 55gr FMJs made by Zero Bullets.
It likes pretty well 55gr FMJs made by Hornady.

I found a load made from Hornady 53gr match grade hollow points and H335 powder it LOVED. Just over 1/2" group at 100 yds.

I haven't yet tried anything heavier than 55gr.
