Default New sport II

Is there is a new sport II coming out? I have seen it on several gun dealers websites. It has a forward assist and dust cover.

It's not on the S&W site that I can find anyhow....

I'd be surprised it they cut anything. I really don't think a dust cover and FA can add much cost when the tooling for every other AR they make is already there. I'm guessing it was done to compete feature-wise with Ruger's AR-556.

Looks like melonite has been renamed again to Armornite.

Probably why the Sport was on deep discount everywhere since Black Friday.

Very nice! The FA & Dust Cover were not a deal breaker when I picked up my Sport. Adding them might make me pick up the new version someday. Then again, if I can find another 1st Gen weapon at an even better price, I may go that route to add to the one I have.

interesting.. you're probably right, the Ruger AR556 has them and they probably need to keep up to compete cuz NO WAY was it that expensive to include them. Might add another to the collection

Default New sport II

The timing of this news sucks. I picked up my sport last week. I guess for $500 I can afford two. New sport II

Definitely an attempt to keep Ruger from stealing any more market share... now if they would just put the 1:8 barrel back in it. Real world might not make much difference, but when comparing specs on paper, it would set them apart again.

Aw man. I knew this would happen. I just got my Sport a couple months ago. Haven't even got to shoot it yet. I'm glad to see they added that. It ought to help them sell quite a few to those who passed on the Sport because of the lack of DC and FA.

This doesnt bother me a bit. Im very happy with my early Sport and upgrading to have DC & FA is not a great motivator.
Change in product line features is always good and sales and marketing
make their livings changing things. I hope those shooters who feel they should have held back in wait dont worry too much about not having a DC & FA. Its ok.

Yeah, i agree... I was more interested in the fact that it was a new model and if anyone had details on availability... There doesn't seem to be any info on their website.

Yes.... But no mention of it elsewhere. I would have thought that they would be advertising it somehow... As a new product, like they do for all of their other weapons. And via this post seems to be the 1st anyone has mentioned that it may exist to my knowledge. But maybe not...

They are probably waiting until they have sufficient supply in the pipe line before making an official announcement. But the PDF and the store ad show that it is coming. Good find!

Unlike Ruger. They announce new products three months ahead of availability. I would have wound up with an AR-556 when I started looking for my first AR. When none were to be found, more research and money led me to a S&W mid moe. Glad it worked out that way.

Wow, I was just in there earlier and it wasn't there. Interesting that it is listed at the same MSRP as the old Sport, and they still have the old Sport as well... wonder how long before it goes to archive.

i called smith & wesson today and they said they rifle was released to dealers within the last 48 hours from 12-10-15. so they should be hitting dealers next week. i called mine and gave them my name, told him to call when they arrived, i want one, maybe two.

Great solution to an Internet created problem. But, I understand that from a marketing perspective it makes perfect sense.

Speaking of marketing, now I guess I have a "Sport Classic"!!!

It doesn't say anything of the barrel being chrome lined just says steel? So is it?

No, the Sport barrel is not chrome lined, it is salt nitrided. They once called it Melonite, then "durable corrosion resistant finish", and now appears to be called Armornite.

Nope, some of their barrels are chrome lined, some are salt nitride... product differentiation.

At that price, it makes me want to buy another AR. I already have two that I don't shoot enough. I have to admit though, the FA and the DC were what pushed me over the fence when I was trying to decide between the M&P 15 Sport and the Bushmaster M4A3. Virtually the same price at the time.

I'm not sure I understand the point of buying essentially the same gun again, just to have a FA and DC is? Especially, since those two items are things that are largely unnecessary and mostly unused? It'd be far cheaper to just get a stripped upper or something and transfer all the parts over.

As much as I would have liked to have waited for the new Sport, I just can't justify paying $600 +/- to get a FA and DC. It never hurts to have another gun (and I'm not judging anyone for wanting to add to their stables), especially one that get's the anti's panties all bunched up in a wad. However, I just think a deep breath is in order when considering $600 for a FA and DC.

Better yet, why buy a rifle without a FA and DC if ya want them? To save a couple bucks? A decent optic, trigger and 1k case of ammo will be a $1,000. Why cheap out buying a rifle that isn't just what the person wants?

Beats me. You'd have to ask someone who actually bought a Sport using that reasoning. I didn't buy my Sport to save a couple bucks on a FA and DC. I knew exactly what I was getting. If I wanted to save a few bucks, and wanted a FA or DC I would have bought the AR-556. I was even considering a 6920, but I didn't need all that. A simple, basic AR fits my needs just fine.

My comment farther up was more of a knee jerk reaction than anything else. My luck always has it that when I buy something, a new version always comes out (or it goes on sale). I have the same luck with gas. It doesn't matter when I buy it, it always seems like the next day it goes down. I've been asked before when I next plan on buying gas.

It was a rhetorical question.

JaPes has already well documented the $2,500 Sport.

If they had put the 1:8 twist in the Sport II rest assured I'd be buying one.

I'm glad they didn't so I'm not torn between buying another rifle or building an upper!

Both places that I would buy from now have the new version listed. I'm not quite sure why it would be an extra $100 though. Of course even with the price increase I'm torn as to whether I want to buy or build my next rifle.

I think gun prices have bottomed out and are beginning to rise due to the upcoming election, San Bernardino, and increased sales. Suggested price by S& W is $739.

Depends on what you want... If you want a basic carbine with an A2 front sight post, and don't mind the lack of forward assist and dust cover, get the Sport. (unless they have the Sport II, then you get the forward assist and dust cover)

If you are going to immediately get rid of the front sight post in favor of an extended rail and flip up sights... the Sport might not be the right choice.

Yes, that's a good price.

But like Cypher says, consider if that's the configuration you want or not. If not, move on. Buying a rifle to replace the parts you just bought isn't the way to go if you can avoid it.

Thanks Cyphertext and Chatt..for the replys. Withe the price I might go with the Sport just to see what it is like I don't get to shot long guns as much as I do my pistols since my range doesn't allow long guns.

A guy on another forum says he got one at Cabela's yesterday for $549... thought he was getting the old Sport at that price, but got the Sport II.

I bought my Sport, in Dec 2012 and could care less about having an FA & DC. The dam think has served me so well, (Better than the colt M4 I used in Iraq) .
I was at my LGS and the owner told me he can't keep enough AR's in stock...their selling out faster than he can get them in....he has never seen or had such high sales in 40 yrs in business.
That's gun sales of all flavors and brands.
