Default Shutting of the gas

Can I get better accuracy with this bench rest AR15 if I close the gas port down all the way? I and loading it single shot any way as the rounds are longer then the mag. I would just need to pull the charging handle back every time drop in the next round and hit the bolt release. Want to get these groups below .36" I know should have bought a bolt action but I built this rifle. Don

My JP Ar is a 1/4" gun my Les Baer was even more accurate both in semi auto mode. The JP has an adjustable gas port and is what they call their low mass operating system.
I could see shutting off gas to work up load and then opening it up just enough for the action to function reliably.
There is a magazine for single shot use and if your not taking advantage of its semi auto function you may have been better off with a bolt action.
I used my ARs guns for prairie dogs and the speed of the semis along with a muzzle brake made it possible to clear a mound quickly.

Yes the item for single shot loading is called the Bob Sled and I use one in my bench gun. The rounds i and shooting are to long for a mag and I also find if shooting targets with a mag in I start firing to fast and the range I shoot at has a 3 seconds between shots. Those are good groups I am looking for that 1/4" @ 100yds. Don

I would think that you would be less likely to change your position on the bags if you simply allowed the bolt to lock back after shooting. There's a lot of movement involved each time you pull back the charging handle. I've always found AR's sensitive to bag position.

That is a good point that I had not thought of. I isn't as critical using the bag rider and the adapter plate it sits in on the front rest but yes it does move the rear bag around. I do adjust the gas block to the point the bolt just locks back after every shot and when testing loads if they are a little light it does not lock back. had that problem with all the charge weights with IMR 4198.
