Default Is the M&P 15 Sport II castle nut staked?

I am at work and figured someone outside of Free America has changed their buffer tube and pinned a new stock shorter.

Also, Mil Spec I assume.

Thanks.

Yes, mil spec. My regular Sport is staked, I would then assume that the II is staked also.

depends on how it's done. sometimes it's almost effortless (just enough to prevent it from coming undone shooting) and sometimes it can be a pain. Each rifle is hand done, so it'll vary rifle to rifle/person to person.

Was easy on my staked Sport, put the rifle in a vice block and used a standard armorers wrench and it came right off with moderate hand-force.

Exactly. It depends on how much metal they displaced when staking.

Hi everyone. I've just joined the forum. I'm from S. AR. Thanks for having me!

I've found conflicting information so I hope I can have this cleared up for me here.

I have a new S&W M&P sport 2 and the castle nut isn't staked. I have two friends who just bought new ones and both of theirs are staked. Is this something I need to do? Thank you!

Had my M&P-15 sport II for about two months. Castle nut was NOT staked. Getting ready to put a Magpul QD sling mount on the rifle and totally expected to have a big fight to get the castle nut off. WRONG! Just a little torque with the correct wrench, and the nut came right off.

I'll be replacing the sling mount and re-tighting the castle nut in a couple of days, I'm thinking of a bit of blue locktite rather than staking it in case I need to remove it in the future...What do you think?

Thanks for the input,

Rick

Question

Those of you with the castle nut not staked, did you ever consider calling S&W and asking their opinion on why it's not staked?

Once I am happy with my set up I stake the castle nut. If done correctly the castle nut will never back off on its own but is still easy to remove if the need ever arises. A center punch and a couple good whacks is all that's needed.

I actually DID call about mine not being staked. They said it should be fine but if I ever have trouble with it to send it in and they'll fix it.

I told them that from my understanding that it probably should have been staked. They wanted to know where I got that information. When I told them I researched it on the Internet, they said you can't believe 90% of what you find on the Internet...

So there you have it, the official response from S&W.
