Default M&P15 TS Vortex Flash Hider Replacement

I recently purchased a M&P15 TS...First, I want to say that I absolutely love this gun! However, I have been reviewing several muzzle devices, such as the Ferfrans CDR and the Spike's Tactical Barking Spider, and would like the option of replacing my flash hider with one of these. So my question is this...#1 can I or a gunsmith remove the "fixed" or "pinned" vortex flash hider that is on my TS? #2 what are your thoughts of the muzzle devices I listed?

Thanks,

Sounds like one of those projects that when completed you ask yourself why.

Why would it be pinned? The TS has a 16.1" barrel, so the flash hider should just be screwed on (unless there's some weird regulation in your state).

If it's not pinned, removal is simply a case of using an armorers wrench to unscrew the old one - it's on there tight so you need to secure the gun, preferably with something like a Geissele reaction rod rather than a vice block to avoid stress on the upper, but a vice block or clamping the barrel in a pipe vice will work (use something like leather in there to avoid marring it). You'll need a new crush washer to fit the new flash hider, throw the old one away.

Don't know either of those flash hiders but a couple of things to note; generally the recoil is so light on a 223 AR that IMO the perceived recoil difference between different compensators is close to zero, so don't let that impact your decision. There can however be a large difference in the barrel flash and perceived noise, if you care about either of those things. For me it comes down to how it looks, how loud it is from behind the weapon, and the price. Just some things to think about.

My bad I checked the product spec and saw barrel listed as 16.1" didn't scroll down, I stand corrected. There's a reason my username is noob.

I guess it'll need to go to a gunsmith to get it off then.

Can you or a gunsmith remove it? Depends on either your skill or the gunsmith's skill level. It also depends on how well the muzzle device was pinned. Do a YouTube video search. You'll see video's of folks grinding away at pinned muzzle devices.

What's your end goal: flash suppression or compensation? You can have one or the other. Those that claim to do both rarely do either well. A well designed compensator does reduce perceived recoil. The drawback is that the people shooting in the lanes to either side of you will hate you.

As far as flash suppressor, the best I've used is a Smith Vortex.

The only good reason to change a muzzle device is to accommodate your silencer. Everything else is basically marketing.

Hey guys...thanks for the comments...I believe that I may just stick with the vortex...not sure I wanna take the risk associated with replacement.

If you really want to do it, you can send it to ADCO... as long as it is pinned only, not soldered on.

Personally, unless having the gases expel to the side are a real issue for you, I wouldn't waste the money.

Look at it this way, not a lot of AR's out there with your flash suppressor. Although I have a M&P performance upper with your barrel and the Smith Enterprises flash suppressor.

If his is like mine, the pin is cover over in solder, unless it's all solder and no pin, idk. Just know there is solder on the surface.
