Default I think I'm going to take my Sport back to stock

My Sport was my first ever AR15, it has treated me very, very well. Super reliable, accurate and just a super shooter.

Subsequently I've managed to collect a few more rifles (it's true, you can't have just one) that each have a purpose for me with different gas systems, lengths, rails etc. Recently I've even started doing builds too, so I am sure there are even more rifles on my horizon. So I got to thinking, why not take my first ever and return it to it's bone stock form. I use it mostly for fun anymore so why not bring back some nostalgia and shoot it as it came from the factory.

So who here has a stock Sport or Sport II that they are shooting. Just kind of curious since all we see anymore (mostly) is modded up rifles.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

My Sport is just way it came out of the box, the only thing I may or may not add is an optic

I kept my Sport stock except that I replaced the hand guard with one that looked exactly the same, but had a heat shield.

my sport is running a red dot thats the only "mod" I've done to it. i'm half tempted to get a second upper for it but as my father half jokingly said "then you can only shoot one at a time."

Just a scope and extended charging handle added to mine.
Hope that counts.

I was thinking of sighting it in today. I got just about everything lined up, but I just don't feel like shooting it. I think I'm broken.

When I got my Sport II, I told myself I wasn't going to go down the road of no return. I told myself I learned my lesson with my Mossberg 500. I bought so much junk for it with the intention of making it tacticool. I ended up taking it all off and going back to stock. The only main difference is I found a great deal on eBay for wood furniture for it. I switched out the plastic and put the wood on it.

I didn't/don't want to head down that path with my AR-15. I know there's about a million different things you can get for them. Even more than Mossberg 500's. I fear resistance may be futile, though. An FDE set of Magpul furniture keeps teasing me. Must... Resist...

It's best to resist. I'm not against upgrading. What I'm against (via 1st hand idiot experience) is thoughtless upgrading. I wasted so much money to get my former 15-Sport to it's final configuration that I should have just bought a higher spec factory rifle to start. I almost fell into the Ruger 10/22 upgrade money pit around the same time I had the 15-Sport. While I liked my 15-Sport, I turned a perfect, lightweight, K.I.S.S. rifle into a heavy decked out pig.

If I ever go down the AR-15 path again, I'm going to buy a 15-Sport II. The only two additions I'd make would be an Aimpoint Micro and a Geissele trigger.

Very much agree.

Generally... an AR is an AR is an AR. The optic and trigger define the rifle.

That's what I'm afraid of with my Sport II. Before I even got the Sport I told myself I'm not going to do that. The only reason I was thinking about the Magpul FDE stuff, was purely for color. Not even the fact that it's Magpul or necessarily "better" than the stock furniture. Just color. I don't want to get something based purely on aesthetics. I really like the looks of carry handles, too, but I don't think I want that. I would like to eventually put a red dot or even scope it, so a carry handle would probably end up in a drawer anyway.

If I take aesthetics out of the equation, I think the only thing I might do is replace the handguard with one that looks identical but has a heatshield. Even then I'm not sure why I would need to do that. I don't do mag dumps and certainly not full auto fire. 5.56 is too expensive to mag dump it.

So yeah, that's the extent of my customization plans for it. And that's not much of a plan is it? Other than a possible optic down the road I think I'm just going to leave it as is. I don't want to customize it just for the sake of customizing it.

How in the world can you do that??? The Sport is made to shoot, not sit in a box like a trophy. Shoot that thang!

Can't really say I "over did" my early Sport to begin with. It was a tack driver right out of the box with my reloads. Changed the butt stock, handgrip, handguard, switched to a hydraulic buffer and added a scope. Did my own trigger work and left that stock. I was in the process of free floating the barrel, but bought a M&P-T instead and did the same (except the already free floated handguard), with that.

If you want FDE, go for it. When it first came out and was the only game in town, Magpul furniture was the thing to have. Deck out your rifle with Magpul furniture and you start looking like a plethora of rifles that are factory equipped with Magpul furniture.

Try something different. I mounted something different to the AR-15 I built. A mission first tactical minimalist stock and I don't even remember who made the super slim diameter keymod two piece handguard with heat shields.

Until the small LGS sells it on consignment, I technically still own an AR-15.

I liked it well enough. It was very easy to rock from low ready to on target. Very lightweight.

What I liked most about it is that not everyone has one. I'd see folks with some flavor of Magpul or some other crazy stocks that had exaggerated cheek welds, storage compartments galore, and promised everything under the sun.

Thanks might have to get one for my build. Funny you mention the Stocks you see. I love Magpul and have their stocks on a rifle or two, but you are right about seeing others rifles at events. I did a combat shoot at our club yesterday and all I saw were exactly as you said. Magpul or some über fancy 100 way adjustable big bulky thing. You are right on point.

I have ordered this rail for it but I don't plan on adding anything other then a red dot.

JaPes, took you advice and bought a MFT for my newest build, then did the whole paracord thing. I like it.

I told myself I would keep my Sport stock, but this is what I ended up with:

I really didn't like shooting the Sport stock because I couldn't get my support hand far enough out front.

Not a problem now.
