1st mod on my Sport II! Well, after the red dot...
I would like to get a new handguard. To me the handguard is the most definitive piece that sets one's AR apart from another's.
I have been doing some research and it 'appears' the M-LOK system is the new kid on the block and is very versatile. I don't need a new state of the art $300 rail on my $550 AR, but would like something I can add onto later.
I like the longer rifle length handguards so it appears to me I can purchase the Rifle Length M-LOK for under $40 and then add from there. Does this seem like a wise decision?
The only other question I have is I assume the front OE sight would merely get loosened and moved forward to allow for the longer handguard. Is that correct?

No, you can not simply loosen and move the front sight forward. The front sight is also the gas block... the gasses go from the barrel, through the gas block, and through the gas tube to drive the bolt back. Without it, it won't be a semi auto anymore.
You can add free floating tubes that have MLOK that go further out on the barrel, but only if you add a low profile gas block that fits under the hand guard.
You can not simply use a Magpul rilfe length guard.

Added an Magpul Slim Line Hand-guard ... its great. Slimmer, easier to get a grip and I can hold the rifle farther toward the front sight
Took 6 months but I think I have my AR where I want it ... for now

It may be a little more advanced, but a "mock dissipator" can be made by using a low pro gas block and either having a professional re-install the front sight at rifle length, modify the front sight for set screws, or simply buy a clamp-on front sight. A railed set screw upper height base could also be used that would allow more versatility.
I'm a fan of making what you want out of stuff.

Thanks for the input guys. The AR is obviously not in front of me right now, or I probably would have had an answer for the front sight question prior to asking.

Holosun
I have been using a cheap $30 red dot with about a 6 MOA. Kept leaving the thing on after shooting and batter would run dry.
NOW I have a Holosun 2MOA Red Dot. Gentleman, this red dot is the best. First, tiny red dot with actual 2 MOA. Also uses not only solar power when available, but the CR 2032 battery combined with the solar power offers 50,000 hours of battery life. I will have to have my grandsons confirm the battery life. It will go off in a dark room after 8 hours, and will wake up when you touch it, or life it up. Great for those "bumps in the night".
Soooo accurate, only limitation is the shooter.

Chappy... it is the same thing that you stated you ordered.
They are carbine length but has a little bit of plastic that extends under the front sight base. Uses standard barrel.

Carbine length has 3 M-Lok slots at 2 and 10:00; mid-length has the 4 slots.
I ordered carbine length.
Please hit me over the head if I am missing something.
I may have answered my question. It appears Wayne's AR is an M&P 15 MOE Mid whereas I have the Sport II.
