You can find the specs on the S&W website. They used to be melonite, I tend to prefer hard chrome since it's proven as a life extender. Melonite may be equal or superior, we'll just have to wait & see.

Here's a quote from S&W's press release announcing the Sport II:

"Chambered in 5.56 NATO, the new rifle has been fitted with a 16-inch barrel comprised of 4140 steel with a 1 in 9-inch twist. For added
longevity, the rifle features a durable corrosion resistant ArmorniteŽ finish along with a chrome lined bolt carrier, gas key and firing pin."

"Armornite" is S&W's new term for Salt-Bath Nitriding barrel treatment. It replaces "Melonite" which I believe S&W was no longer able to use (at least not without a hefty fee)

eugene s. Thx much for your responses. Good news on the armornite finish...Wish they would have stayed with the 5 groove rifling but don't mind the new 1 in 9 twist rate....

Neither. Armornite. That is S&W's new nitride hardening process.

Welcome. Given what they're selling for right now I think the Sport II is one of best AR values going. S&W seems committed to standing behind the product though they may be feeling the strain a bit. I'd be curious to know how many they've sold in the last 12 months.
