Enjoy shooting this firearm. Installed a vortex spitfire 3x and want to remove front hard sight. I realize a new separate gas block is needed. Would you suggest I have this done or is it easy enough for novice?

Check with your local gunsmith see what they would charge....
If you have the proper tools it can still be a chore due to the pins being difficult to remove holding the site in place ..If the price is less than a hundred bucks I would let them do it...But that's just me...
I am looking at doing the same thing myself, still on the fence at the moment...

Most gunsmiths will charge $50-60 an hour. This is a 20 minute job tops if they are a competent smith. Unless you foresee doing this to other rifles, you are better off taking it somewhere.
Also, if you have an A2 site, it has a ring that sits behind the sight that retains the handguard. If you want to use a low profile gas block, I'm not familiar with one that will retain this piece/ original handguard. A railed gas block will work though. Go to the smith website at look at their m&p optics ready model.

If you are taking off the front A2 sight, you are best served to free float a new handguard, I mean why not, all the work is done. There is no reason to install a low profile gas block and try to put the stock handguard back on.
The Spitfire does have a non-illuminated reticle option, so you don't really need back up sights. Go for a free float rail without the backup iron sights and you'll be GTG.

Unless the OP doesn't want to incur the additional cost...in that case a railed gas block will work fine and allow him to keep costs to a minimum. I'd vote, however, to get a free float hand guard but a decent quality one will be around $150.

Driving out the A2 front sight block tapered pins doesn't take much mechanical aptitude. The only thing to remember is that the S&W pins drive out in the opposite direction of every other AR-15. It's been a while since I've done it, so do a forum search and you'll find out which way to drive them out. What is frustrating is that those pins are in tight (good thing). I had to use very stout hammer blows to drive them out.
As for a gas block, get a YHM low profile clamp on style gas block and call it good. While you've got everything taken down, you might as well install a nice key-mod free float handguard.

Oh... I forgot...
You can always cut down your front sight post. Do a YouTube search. Cut off the sight, grind and contour, debur, then some cold blue and you're good.
