Just picked up my 1st AR .. SW M&P Sport
Never really got into the AR platform. Been a handgun guy for many years. Thought about buying one a few times, well my neighbor here is moving to New Jersey, I tried to talk him out of it !! But a 1.5 hr drive each way was just too much for him.
Well his move was my gain, he had a SW Sport, he tells me a original one, no forward assist and no dust cover. He would of had to do some mod's to get it NJ comp. He decided to sell it and buy a Comp AR. Any way to find out the manufacture date ? S/n # is SV54XXX
He never shot this one, came with original box. 2 - 30rd Pmags. I helped him here and there with some stuff. He sold it to me for 400.00. I told him I'll buy him a few of his favorite cold beverages.
The AR is all new to me, will read up and get her to the outdoor range and get to know it. I was looking up a optic for it. The Red Dots look like it might be a go.
Whatcha guys think ? Any Do's or Dont's I need to know. All opinions and advise is welcomed. Thank You in advance.

Sweet score, get out and shoot it. I wouldn't worry about all the aftermarket bits people will tell you to put on it, just buy ammo and mags.
For optics I would recommend an Aimpoint PRO, they are a really great deal for their quality, and of course if you wanted to buy a higher end optic the T1 / T2 are excellent. Quality optics are worth every cent, if an Aimpoint PRO isn't in your price range currently I would just leave the irons on it until you can afford one or a comparable optic. At any rate it is a good idea to get comfortable with the irons before you start using a dot.

Nice score there Raystown, especially if you got it on a private sale!
There are plenty of vids on youtube to help you get up to speed on disassembly, cleaning and assembly, I especially like the video featuring Ashley on cleaning the AR15. Almost any high quality optic will work on your AR, depending on the role you envision it playing.
My only recommendation is that whichever you choose, be certain that the back up iron sights(BUIS) are still usable, in the event you have an optic fail.

Your friend is indeed a friend, he gave you a great deal on that Sport! I paid about $625 for mine two years ago (including shipping & tax) plus FFL transfer.
As said above, get all the decent ammo you can first, then look around for a decent optic. The above suggestion (Vortex Strikefire) seems to be a popular one.

I mounted a Vortex Surefire II on my MP15 Sport and am very happy with it. I provides me with either a red or green dot and came for under $200 with mount. I purchased my Sport new last year and paid a bit more than you but you made a great deal. I don't know if it adds to the value or anything but my Sport has the NRA logo on the lower receiver.

Not only a great deal, but he sold it you just as the prices are starting to go up dramatically. At a LGS today, the owner called his father in Tenn. He told him the prices up there were raised $300 per gun for all assault type rifles yesterday. I only know what I heard and can't verify that, but it looks like they are drying up again.

Good job! I just purchased my 1st AR as well this week! I got the M&P AR15-22 sport! Love it! Put 100 rounds through it yesterday and another 150 today! 2 inch groups at 50 yards with the iron sights this afternoon! You are gonna love it! Just go buy several magazines and a lot of ammo and shoot it a lot and worry about accessorizing it later! Good luck and have fun!

Thanks Fellas for all the posts and info. I do feel like I bought it just in time, i think we might be in some tough times with the bills the gov't is trying to pass. I think its surely going to get worse. Hopefully we will ride the tide and things will settle down. But it don't look that way.
Have a great weekend fella's. Be safe out there.

It appears I picked a decent entry level AR.
Obama once again convinced me that it's my patriotic duty to help take dangerous firearms out of circulation. It's the third time he's been able to accomplish that. What an amazing orator! That's how I ended up with a Springfield XDM with high capacity magazines and an M&P Shield.
I don't have a real need for an AR. Whistle pigs feel my wrath through a Henry .22.
This time though, it was apparent I needed to upgrade. Being a lefty, I hadn't shot an AR since the last Colt I shot bounced a casing off my cheek. It's nice to see that a brass deflector now seems to be a standard feature.
Cabela's had the Sport ll for $599. Unfortunately, all the stores in Idaho were sold out, so none of the other shops would price match. I went to a small, local dealer and paid full boat at $672. That's the downside. The upside is that a sign on the door announced an upcoming sale on this particular rifle. When I smiled and asked if I should wait for the sale, the entire staff started laughing and informed me they were about to increase the price. C'est les vie.
I think this will suit my needs just fine. And I get to poke progressives in the eye once again. I just need this guy to leave office. It's been hell on my wallet.

Memories of 2013. The Fed Ex truck arrived at one LGS while I was there today. Stacks of 5.56 AR15 ammo and 7.62 AK ammo. . .as in 1000 round bricks all pre-sold. More coming in next Tuesday. Exactly 3 years ago our biggest LGS was empty of all guns and ammo. Couldn't get any more either. He was talking about closing for a few months since he had nothing to sell. The rush to buy the AR's and AK's spread to everything gun related including magazines. Take inventory and decide what you need. Next month could be too late to get anything.

Congratulations, your friend is a good friend indeed.
You will be very happy with the rifle. I have had the original Sport for some years now and I have a Sport II on order.
I was debating between the Ruger AR 556 and the Sport II and in the end having been so happy with the original sealed the deal.

I paid more for my 15-22 than you did that Sport! Heckuva deal.
I recently bought a 300 BLK upper for my Sport 15, it fits like a glove.
I'd have made that a Smith as well, since most of my coolection is, but
I just couldn't see paying $200 more plus the shipping for the stamping.
Best of luck, I bet you'll love it for years...

I own an M&P15 Sport (GEN 2 no dust cover/no fwd assist/1:9 barrel) and I love mine. It was also my first AR.
I originally put a Primary Arms Micro-Dot red dot on it with a QD riser that allowed for lower 1/3 co-witness. It is a great budget optic and held zero perfectly. I have an astigmatism, which made the red dot "star" a little, so I upgraded to a Vortex 1x Spitfire Prismatic scope (SPR-1301). It has an illuminated etched reticle, which can be used in either green or red. And since the reticle is etched, if my scope goes dark, I still have a black reticle with which to aim. This is important, because since this scope is truly 1x magnification, you cannot use your BUIS through this optic. I am more than happy with this optic and recommend it to any AR owner. Vortex also has a GEN 2 of this optic with the model number being SPR-200.
If all you want is a red dot that works and is built like a tank and doesn't cost as much as your rifle, have a look at the Primary Arms Micro-Dot. If you have a few extra bucks to spend, take a look at the Vortex.
Enjoy your new rifle!

1x magnification does not provide any magnification at all... Think back to grade school, one times x = x.
It is true that you can not co-witness the prism scope with your BUS, but magnification is not the reason.

Great score!!! S&Ws website shows the current suggested price at $739... and in the condition you described AND with the current anti-gun climate I would think your friend could easily have gotten close to what a new one would go for.
Here in the Fascist state of California that sale would have had to gone through an FFL incurring extra cost and a paper trail. (I know they say it doesn't, but does anyone really believe that?) I would have no problem paying extra for a gun with no paper trail if it were actually possible (ahem...) considering the current political gun-grabbing climate. Maybe it's time to move to a more gun friendly state.
Anyway, enjoy your new to you AR. I have an M&P AR-15 and it's a great shooter. After you play around with it for a while you will realize the AR is an elegant piece of machinery too.

Yeah, the paper trail thing. We like to call it "footprints" around here. Most people I know will pay an extra $100 for most any desirable gun that has no footprints. When I go to any gun show, I immediately go the side and back walls where all the old guys are set up (not dealers) and see what Smiths they might have. Only drawback is you have to have cash, and I run out pretty quickly.

Thanks Fella's for all the great responses and advice, My buddy who build's AR's said I found a great deal. He is now telling me about a few Optic options. He was leaning towards a " Sparx " forgive me about the spelling, I have all the optic info in a email. Pretty sure he said " Sparx "
All you guys been great with advise and things I need to know. Now if I can only put the SW Revolvers down long enough to go have some fun with it. I been bit by the Revolver bug ...
