Default AR-15

I hope I am on the right page. I am thinking about buying an AR while I still can and wondered what make and caliber you would recommend and what the price range might be?

The 556/233 on the barrel means the AR-15 can shoot either round in that rifle either military 556 or civilian 223 ammo. As far as which AR-15 to buy it would depend on what you want to use it for. An entry level AR-15 should meet your needs like a S&W Sport II or a Ruger 556.

I'm afraid we would need a lot more information from you to guide your decision. What are you going to use it for? Target shooting, hunting, defense? What is your budget? Do you reload or buy ammo off the shelf? Do you plan to purchase a suppressor?

Many calibers available depending on use, ranging from .22lr to .50 Beowulf. Price ranges vary as wildly as caliber, ranging from $400 to several thousand.

If you just want an AR to have one, buy a Sport and call it a day. Shoots 5.56mm or .223, you can change furniture easily to "customize" it, and parts are easy to find and readily available.

Attend a gun show York Pa. two weeks ago...............
The bottom came out of the AR market.
Don't wait, buy Now.
Come the elections this will change and fast..
Some one 'Q' $600 for S&W AR and is right on.
Just make sure its approved for both .223/5.56.
The you are open completely for the Ammo.
Also look around for Heavy Barrel, some are called
Bull Barrels. You will have an all around firearm.

We had an American Spirit Arms in 5.56 and we were highly satisfied. I do like their side charger and might have to get one...

Some people talked bad about them but ownership had changed since them. When we went for a factory tour Joe and Christine Sirochman were the owners. They were really friendly, no BS, open to all questions. They were also aware of the bad reputation the previous owner had (don't remember his name). But Joe said he wanted to keep the name b/c what's not to like about American Spirit?!

Ownership recently changed again (April 2015) and I don't know any on the people that are in charge now.

Here's part from their press release:

Quote:
American Spirit Arms, maker of precision, high quality AR15 and AR10 rifles is pleased to announce its sale to American Spirit Investments, LLC. American Spirit Investments, LLC, is a Scottsdale, Arizona investment company headed by CEO Phil Tomczyk and President Rob Dunaway. Together with CFO Durenda Benton-Tomczyk and Vice President, Michael Manning, the new management team brings decades of precision firearms manufacturing, executive and financial management, and legal experience to American Spirit Arms. The company has confirmed that the American Spirit Arms brand will be retained.
Here's the link to our factory tour:
https://estradaarmory.wordpress.com/...t-arms-070714/

Prices are fair, quality is good, lifetime warranty. Like I said I like the side charger. Another good brand is BCM. Slightly higher prices but very good quality and reputation.

I too am looking at ARs. As mentioned what is your budget?
From what you mentioned in another post for HD and I assume targets ! Sort of whay I am looking at.. Foe a nice entry levl AR w/O breaking the bank the S&W Sport 2 has Great reviews and a Great price around 600$ + or - and Life Time Warranty, a Ruger AR556 is around $550, also has good reviews , with a few complaints about the take down pins being hard to remove for cleaning!
See if your local range rents some. But I would assume they will all be fairly close in feel, but so far never owned a AR but that will change soon

Thumbs up

Being you're on a S&W forum, you will get a lot of "buy a Sport" answers.
If I were new to the AR world I would go to my LGS range and rent some AR's to test fire. That way only YOU can decide which one is for YOU!
I own the first gen Sport and just recently bought an AR-556. Don't let people here "tell" you or "persuade" you to by a S&W just because you're on a S&W site. Buy what YOU feel is the most comfortable in YOUR hands!

I'm going to suggest my S&W model because I own one like Disabled1 said. I have the Magpul edition and, by what I see lately, is now the Sport II LOL. Not really but not far from it. I do very much enjoy mine and it shoots better than I can. I cannot however, tell you it's better than any other AR 15 because the only other one I own is a 1982 Colt SP-1. And I love them both equally
