Default Optics red dot?

New to the forum. I tried to search but for some reason my tablet won't let me. I'm thinking about getting a scope and need pointed in the right direction. I'm leaning toward a red dot but would like something with some magnification. I've seen a few swing outs online. But not sure what to even look for. I mostly target shoot, 100 to 200 yard range, and could use help in finding a reasonably priced set up. New M&P AR15 owner and have no idea what all I'll need. It's completely stock right now.

Your biggest issue with a red dot is going to be the A2 front post assuming you have the Sport II. That A2 post might get in the way depending on your mount. If you have an optic ready version you are good to go.

If your life is not on the line then I would look at the Vortex line. They have a 3X magnifier which is pretty good and tons of red dot scopes that run $200 and under.

I like the Vortex Sparc 2 over the Sparc AR but both have their following. They can be had for $150 to $200.

Vortex Optics - SPARC II Red Dot

The magnifier runs 150 to $170. It comes with the flip out mount.

On a budget it is hard to beat this combo. IMHO

A 2 MOA red dot will fit inside a 3" bullseye at 100 yards, good enough for government work. I have an Aimpoint PRO on a medium height, LaRue mount, with a 3x Aimpoint magnifier between my eye and the red dot, on a swing-out LaRue mount, extending the effective range to 300 yards or more. I replaced the rear sight with one which folds down and latches. The front post falls in the red dot field, about 1/3rd from the bottom. The Aimpoint could be used as a super-ghost-ring if the battery were to fail. (The CR1/3 battery runs continuously for over 2 years.)

I tried the Aimpoint twist-lock magnifier mount. The problem is you have to put the scope somewhere when it's off the rifle, usually in the pocket of a jacket you aren't wearing when you need the scope. The scope has no effect on POI, and the Aimpoint can be adjusted to center the red dot in the eyepiece. The Aimpoint PRO is a real bargain if you don't need night vision settings. You could drive tent stakes with it.

I agree, it's a bargain and it is N/V capable. At least my 4 year old one is.
It would be a shame if they dropped that feature.

Default Optics red dot?

Primary arms has their 3 power red dot/scope (acog like) and should be back in stock late August (it says). Sub $300 I think. Etched glass and illuminated reticle settings. I have their gen 1 on a 15-22 and it works well. A bit heavy but it might be worth looking into.

Vortex also makes the spitfire which is also 3x fixed. Sub $400 for that one.

Ever look into a 1-4x scope?

If you decide to spend a lot of money then there is this one:

Meprolight M-21B Reflex Sight 1x 30mm Bullseye Reticle Quick Release

It's top of the line in terms of dollars.

I got a Vortex Strikefire II last year for less than $200. Serviceable, and overall a good value for a durable red (or green) dot optic.

I agree. The Strikefire 2 with the Vortex 3x magnifier. You get an excellent product with an even more excellent warranty. My Strikefire 2 works great and I'm eventually going to get the 3x magnifier.
