Default Play in PSX's Troy handguard?

I have been putting my PSX through its paces, and have decided she's a keeper! I am really glad I decided to start out on the piston platform, the simplicity of cleaning after a couple hundred rounds really makes my day. The only complaint seems to come from the front furniture, and the gas bloc.

I am looking for some advice on the Troy manufacture factory hand guard. Its a short quad-rail setup that looks fantastic, but I am really disappointed in the extra wiggle it seems to suffer from. I just can't seem to remove the play. Is there any way to fix the issue short of replacing the hand guard completely?

It is a simple two piece design to be used with the standard delta-ring set up. I really want the hand guard to be rock solid.

I am hoping someone here could throw some advice out, i.e.- I have done this and it works!, I think you need to replace, I think if you tweak the... etc...

I am not against replacing the factory guard if it calls for it, though if I can fix what she was designed with I'd rather go that road. I have been looking at Samson's Evo7, Magpul MOE SL, and Troy manuf. replacements.

On the first two, they seem to fit around the existing gas block. This brings me to another question all together: I know the S&W PSX action is based on the Adams set; is it identical dimensions wise, as in can I use any hand guard designed to fit the Adams gas bloc?

Thanks all,

This is it.

Nikon Active Target special BDC, Magpul MBUS Pro offsets. Troy mfg QD ring at castle, since the bloc has its own QD.

ATM, handguard moves enough that it has ~2moa of poi change rocking from one extreme to the other on my harris 13 at ~100 yards. Not bad there, but beyond that, and I'm not impressed... (if I lay on a bag on a table, I've got under 1/2 moa groups down pat, and repeatable).

I actually have a set of poly Magpul MBUS but I can't mount a poly front sight on the block... for obvious reasons... so a scope and the steel offsets is where she sits.

The whole setup would definitely be just about right if only I could count on a solid mount on my pod.

Just to clarify, at this point I want this weapon as a 2-300yd coyote/deer rifle with 62gr sp or hp rounds.

I have a M&P15 PS (piston) and I installed a Magpul handguard that is tight and doesn't move at all. I attached a bi-pod to the handguard as well as a sling mount. Solid as a rock. I am using a Midwest (which is metal) folding front sight mounted on the gas block with a folding Magpul rear sight and it is a perfect co-witness with my red dot.

Not sure why your Troy isn't tight. I assume you have checked your D-ring and it is fully in place? The DI versus piston shouldn't make a hoot of difference in how they mount, except that where the piston rod passes through the handguard it should not contact the handguard.

The wiggle is kind of the nature of the beast with drop in rails. Some will fit really tight, almost too tight, and others will have a more or less desirable amount of wiggle to them. Daniel Defense and some other companies' drop in rails have set screws, either actual slotted head screws or allen/hex head set screws to take the play out of the rail.

If the Troy rails are made like Midwest Industries rails, where they have the small steel bars in the end of the rail to set in the slots on the barrel nut you might could apply a small piece of tape there, or even a drop of solder possibly (might require some fine filing or dremel work), it would be a trial and error method at best. This is probably not the best solution. You might want to find another way to attach the bipod if possible.

If you are wanting precision you will probably have to spring for a free float system. Not that the drop-ins are not functional or serviceable, it is however about what you are trying to accomplish.
