Default M&P 15 Sport BCG question

So I took my bolt carrier group apart. When I removed the extractor (even though not necessary) I noticed that the little spring only comes up as far as the rubber gasket....in other words, the top of the spring is even, or flush, with the rubber gasket. The spring does not come up any higher than the rubber gasket. Is that right?? Or is the spring maybe compressed and stuck in the "down" position inside the gasket, if that makes sense.

The spring being compressed is my first inclination without seeing it.

Have you shot the rifle yet? If so, did it function well? If it did, you should be fine.

Yeah, I have shot it a few times with no problems whatsoever. This is the first time I ever took the extractor out though.

Question

When I bought my Sport 1 several years ago the extractor spring had the o-ring installed over the spring. Just recently when my son and I bought the AR-556 his extractor spring had the o-ring, but, mine didn't. It didn't matter to me because I upgraded all (3) AR extractors to the BCM extractor spring upgrade treatment. But, now that I think about it, I wonder if Ruger decided it didn't need it, or, they missed it upon assembly. Hmmmmm...............

Hey Disabled, Last I heard you were about to receive your BCG from Palmetto. Did you receive it? What did you think about it? If it was the Nickel Boron coated one, how was the finish? I'm thinking about ordering one from them now my other order finally arrived, and I'm really interested in your impression of the quality of the BCG.

Thanks for your input,

Rick

By the way, my o-ring and spring looks like the OP's too. Can hardly see the spring. But it seems to work OK. I DO have the BCM spring upgrade kit on order tho.

When I worked on M16s in the Air Force in the 60s I don't remember there being an o-ring on the extractor spring. I have an early M&P 15 and haven't had to replace the extractor or spring yet. When I do, I'll look for the o-ring. I did pick up a spare extractor and spring and I don't think there was a ring in the package. Oh well, at 78 I might just miss anything.

What we have here is a perfect example of fixing something that isn't broken. The only time I have ever pulled an extractor from a bolt was to replace the spring and donut when extraction became a problem after several thousand rounds.

First of all, after all of the research I have/had done on BCG's I came to the conclusion that I would be wasting my money on a nickel boron BCG. Plain and simple, it will need to be scrubbed. Unless you buy a a very high dollar NB BCG.
I bought the PSA BCG #39339, which is the Premium BCG, less the PSA logo. I saved $10 by not getting the logo.
This BCG is the cats a**! Immediately upon firing my AR I felt the difference. And, the extractor spring seems to be just fine, for now. I shoot 98% steel case ammo so I had upgraded both of my AR's to the BCM extractor upgrade kit. I will leave the PSA extractor spring alone. BTW, it does have the o-ring.
I would highly advise you to get the Premium BCG, part #39339, less the PSA logo (unless you have the extra $10 to spend and MUST have the logo).
PSA uses FN to manufacture their BCG's (although I have also heard Toolcraft makes them as well) which is whom BCM and other high dollar BCG companies use as well. So, save a lot of money by avoiding the high dollar BCG makes and spend $89.99 for the PSA Premium BCG. BTW, PSA has been having some crazy sales on this BCG, teaming it up with .223/5.56 ammo, and offering FREE SHIPPING, all for $89.99! I got the BCG, plus 10 boxes of American Eagle 55 gr. .223/5.56 ammo, for $89.99 plus $8.50 S&H!
This is their current deal;
PSA 5.56 Premium HPT/MPI Full Auto Bolt Carrier Group - No Logo - 39339

Like disabled1 said, the only NB finish I've noticed to make a difference to clean-ability is the Fail Zero and that's quite a bit more money. I do think the silver NB coating look cool though, if you're buying just be aware it's mostly for looks vs a standard finish.

I just picked up two of the PSA "premium" BCGs for a couple of builds I'm doing, I got them with the logo because they were on sale for the same price as no logo and came with a free charging handle. I already have one in another rifle I built and it does function perfectly. My only complaint is the finish on these PSA BCGs is a bit rough, I'm not sure what the coating is but the particles don't seem very fine, it's not a smooth feeling finish its almost like a fine grit sand paper, and the bolt operation is *very* stiff to begin with so needs lots of lube until broken in. I guess the finish doesn't really matter if they function, I was worried it would wear the upper but it doesn't seem to have done, It's just when you feel it side by side with another BCG - even the S&W Sport one - and the finish feels kinda cheap. I still bought another two though because the price and function is right so whether the finish bothers you or not is your call.

You can get a SOTA Arms BCG for slight less bucks and the finish is a lot nicer. I've only used one in a build and it also functioned perfectly. I went for the PSA for these two builds because of the free charging handle offer.

SOTA Arms M-16 Bolt Carrier Group (standard)
