Older MP Decision
OK, I have a opportunity to trade a backup deer gun for a MP 15.
Considering doing it as i have little use or attachment to the gun I am trading.
Thing is i know next to nothing about these and it would be nice to have one in case they become..well you know what i mean
The two bought were right before the last scare and were better built in his opinion.
First one is a Sport 1 with R5 rifling in 5.56
Second one is a Magpul MOE ? 5.56
Any thoughts or opinions?
I would of course be learning on this gun.

I'd make that trade for no other reasons then what you've already cited....5.56 you are GTG.....then start laying in ammo.....I've been on a drunken ammo binge here recently

If you have your choice of either rifle for trade without additional boot, take the Magpul MOE. MSRP is about twice that of the Sport.

5r barrels are nice barrels. But either would work. Good luck.

The Magpul MOE has a 1 in 8" 5R barrel.

Maybe... maybe not. The Magpul MOE mid (current product) has the 5R barrel.
The Magpul MOE (old version) does not.

Thanks for the input.
What are the advantages of the R5 BBL? VERY curious
I believe the MOE does not have one as he would have mentioned that both had it.
The gun i have is $900 retail with a $550 scope. Might separate to work a deal. Not expecting to make out as its a good buddy but have to figure if the scope should be in the deal for the right MP 15

On paper, the 5R barrel should lend itself to more accuracy, and the 1:8 twist will stabilize a longer (typically heavier) projectile. The 5R barrel doesn't deform the projectile as much as traditional rifling...
as taken from Obermeyer barrel web page...
What does it mean when a barrel is said to be a "5R"?
5R is the form of rifling I developed for use in most target barrels and in many sporting barrels.
These barrels have 5 grooves, and the lands have angular sides. I have observed that bullet jackets
will deform such that they remain closer to the R-form lands than they will to the sharp-edged
lands present in conventional-style rifling. This reduces powder fouling at the corner of the
grooves. The angled form of the lands also helps to reduce jacket failures in quick-twist barrels.
Real world difference on an AR 15? If you are using M855 or M193 surplus ammo, you probably won't notice much difference in accuracy.

Straight up, I'd take the MOE edition.

Yeah, I'd go MOE too. You get a mid length gas system and very likely a 5R barrel as discussed above.

Hang on to that Sport 1. Too nice a gun/barrel combo to part with.
