Default Removing Hand Grip Problem

Hi guys,

To start wanted to say I'm excited to join the S&W community. I'm currently 19 and in the process of join the Army and bought a Sport 2 in order to get some rifle practice. I have a new pistol grip to put on however I cannot get the hex bolt off to get the stock grip off. I tried using an Hex Key and even online read about using a socket cap screwdriver in which neither worked. I'm afraid the bolt is stripped. Any suggestions in order to get this off?

Welcome to the forum. If you are joining the Army and bought the rifle for practice, why change the grip? The rifle that you are issued is going to have the A2 grip on it...

Hate to say it, but have you tried righty tighty, lefty loosy?

S&W may have used Loctite on it, but you still should be able to break it loose. You might try a soldering iron and apply heat.

It probably is locktited in place and I really hate it when Locktite is used when it's not necessary. The best way to get this stuff to release is by getting it heated up to about 135 degrees so it softens up. For that I would recomend a basic hair dryer and you want to aim it at the hole visible on the INSIDE if the receiver. Note, the lower is probably aluminum and if that is the case you'll need some gloves to protect your hands because 131 degrees is hit enough to cause a light burn in constant contact. BTW, a 135 degree surface is hot enough that most of us can only tolerate direct contact for 3 to 5 seconds, so count 3 steamboats and if it's to the point where you just have to let go then it should be hot enough. I'll also note a short piece of tubing or pliers can provide a bit of extra leverage on the short arm of a Hex Key.

I added a Ruger AR-556 pistol grip onto my Sport 1. I like the fact that it has no finger notch.
