Default GREAT Day!

Today was a GREAT day. Hung out with a buddy and burned 200 rounds on my new Sport II ! And a bunch of 9mm.. BUT for me the BEST part at the range was a Father and 11/12 y/o son shooting, Dad was teaching his son the safety rules of shooting and busting a few cans and metal .22 targets The kid was having a blast and my buddy and I told the kid how great he was doing the smile was great His dad saw my Sport and we chatted about it abit!
I ask the dad if he wanted to try it,he never shot a AR and got a kick out of it I asked the Dad if Jr. could try it,he said yes, we went over safety location etc. Put 1 round in the mag and he got to shoot it, The best part was his Million dollar smile ear to ear on him and his dad,, PRICELESS! 2 new AR shooters soon
Sorry for the long winded story but I am feeling like a million myself thinking about it GREAT DAY

This was some quality work here. Too often I see guys give new shooters full mags and then the shooter is overwhelmed by the semi-auto. By putting just one round in, you made it safe and thereby ensured some happy shooters. Well done, keep it up.

Thank you very much! Funny how doing something as simple as being nice can bring a smile to a person! I also got a big kick out of his dads face after Jr. shot, That was priceless as well. As for the 1 round after some horror stories of noobs with too many rounds ,1 round is the way to go, That is the way I also teach my grandsons Another cool thing was the handshake form Jr. and his dad

I started my step sons with bolt action .22LR rifles. Slow and deliberate. Great story and great job!

I still remember the day I first let my kids shoot something more than a .22. They got such a kick out of it they built their own swinging targets to shoot at. I never had the heart to tell them there was no way to get the target to swing other than shooting it. I don't know if they didn't think of it or they just planned on keeping it bouncing with a few well placed rounds. At any rate they eventually finished their target and I let them shoot it some. They even hit the pie pans they had on strings a few times. That was their swinging target. They were 10-11 or so. My daughter would have only been 8 I guess but she only got one shot at a time. Of course I started my son and his cousin the same way but I let them work up to having 3 rounds in a mag (with dad ready to grab the gun any time needed).

Now my kids are both excellent shooters. I made it fun for them just like the OP did here. Shooting is fun. That's the whole point or a big part of it. Obviously there are other reasons to learn to shoot but for a kid it's the fun that makes them want to build their own targets.

good range time shared. spent one winter, when we got the grandson, range, shooting ethics. when we took him to the range the 1st. time, he remembered the training, did really good. then grandma showed him her " touch." once was watching a women shoot her new shield 9. I stayed down the bench, she was telling her husband it was no good. went down to ask to see the shield. husband offered a full mag to shoot. it shot really well, and POA. asked her husband if I could make a few suggestions on her stance, he threw up his arms, it wouldn't hurt she won't listen to me! she was leaning back when shooting, grip was loose, after 2 mags., she got a smile on her face, and said I really like this pistol, husband came over to thank me. range time is always a learning experience.

Similar story for me. I couldn't get my girlfriend to go shooting with me in the past. It wasn't until some guys she works with did a range trip that she decided to go. She shot all sorts of firearms from .22 to a 1911. She said they took the time to make sure she was comfortable and knew the safety rules.

She has since taken her concealed weapons course and last Christmas she got her own M&P 15T from me.

She loves shooting it and one of my 1911s.

It's kind of like teaching a loved one to drive. Better to have someone else expose them to it. It seems we have more patience with those we are not so close to.

The grin on my girlfriend's 11y/o son's face when he touched off my Garand the first time was priceless.
