Default Sling and flashlight

Hi all,

Just purchased my first rifle- a S&W Sport II.

I was looking at adding this quad rail (Leapers UTG PRO Model 4/15 Carbine Length, Drop-in Quad Rail Handguard - MTU001 - 4712274525061) but I need some suggestions for other accessories.

1- Can you please recommend a two-point sling that is readily available online? And will I need to add any hardware or anything? Or can I simply attach it to the sling adapters currently on the rifle.

2- I like the idea of having a flashlight on the rifle. Any recommendations on one of those?

Thank you in advance!

As for slings I like the Blue Force Gear Vickers Tactical slings, and they will mount to the standard sling mounts found on the Sport. Magpul has some decent slings as well and if you want light and a little less expensive look at the Way of the Gun Proctor slings. If you really want to go cheap on the sling you can go to midway usa and get one of the plain old cotton web slings.

In regard to lights, I personally prefer surefire or streamlight but there are other good ones out there. The surefire and streamlight pistol lights are plenty bright enough for home defense and will readily mount on your quad rail and make an excellent rifle light. If you have something like an "E" or a "G" series hand held Surefire you can get a mount to allow you to mount it to your rail. Personally, I prefer the lights with the tail cap switches with momentary on or click on type tail caps over the wire and pressure switch setups, but that is subject to personal preference. There are other less expensive brands, that may serve you well, but you do get what you pay for sometimes.

I've always used old GI slings they called "silent sling" if I remember, cheap and does everything I need. Here is one for example and yes they work with the sling swivels you have.

I have used a Vickers Blueforce and a VTAC 2 point sling. If I had to start all over again I would pass on the Blueforce and go all VTAC 5.11 slings. It is not that the Blueforce is bad but the VTAC has some features I like better and its build quality seems better for some reason. Here is a great video which explains its advantages of a good 2 point sling better than I can. Mr. Lamb knows a bit more about shooting ARs than I do. I like quick detach buttons because they allow me to remove the sling quickly for storage or for any other reason.

That said slings are like holsters and underwear. They are very personal items and what is best is 100% subjective. What works for me and my body type might not work for you so take all recommendations with a grain of salt.

As far as lights go a lot depends on where you are going to be using that light. Is it mainly indoors or outdoors? The inclination is always to buy the brightest light possible but if your #1 usages is indoors at night in your home too much light can blind you when used against white surfaces like walls. If you are using it to spotlight outside only more light can be better. It is all about the task. The task dictates the choice IMHO. If you know how you are going to use the tool you have a better chance of picking the right tool. One thing I would stress is don't buy a cheap light and a cheap mount. They are often cheap for a reason.

I personally do not like wire switches and other things dangling off my rifle so I want something mounted in a position I can operate with my offhand. You will get a lot of different opinions on this one.

I like this light for a couple of reasons. Inforce WML Weapon Mounted Light - Haley Strategic Partners Edition - 200 Lumens LED - Black Inforce WML Weapon Mounted Light - Haley Strategic Partners Edition - 200 Lumens LED - Black

First it includes a mount so you can attach it directly to a quad rail or quadrail section on a keymod or Mlok tube. It also is a momentary light so it helps with light disciple. It is 200 lumens so it is bring enough for short to mid range work outside but not too bright for inside. I also like that it activates with a simple button on the back of the light. I mount them in front of my front hand stop and with my off hand can activate the light when needed. I do not need to take the gun out of the fight in anyway to use the light. There are no buttons in ramdom places on my rifle and there are no wires dangling around.

Again take my advice with a grain of salt and remember how much you paid for it because that is what it is probably worth. LOL Lights like slings, holsters and underwear are very personal subjective things which are not universally loved by all.

With accessories it is hard to choose without some real demo time. If you look at the classifieds of AR only forums like AR15.com you will see what I mean. Tons of LNIB gear is sold everyday because once the end user got it in their hands for one reason or another it just wasn't for them. So if you have friends who shoot ask them if you can borrow their slings. Take as many as you can to the range and see what works for you before you buy. Same goes for lights IMHO.

I tend to back away from UTG and quad rails. There are newer drop in options. My own choice would be a Midwest Industries two piece Magpul M-Lok compatible rail.

When it comes to slings, I'm a luddite. All I need is a sturdy two point sling. Nothing too fancy.
