Looking to change my stock rear grip.
The rear grip on my S&W AR 15 Sport II feels small and somewhat slick in my hand. Any ideas of a replacement? I have looked on the web and there are many to choose from wish I could feel before I buy.

My personal favorite is the Ergo SureGrip with beaver tail, or if you want finger grooves the Hogue grip with beaver tail is the way to go. The MagPul MIAD grip is OK, I'm not a huge fan because it's hard plastic instead of a rubberized finish, but it does have a storage compartment inside if that's important to you.

Looking to change my stock rear grip.
Magpul moe plus also has the rubberized coating on it. Great grip and comes in a few colors.

I went with the Magpul K2+. It has a softer feel and a more vertical angle.

This is the one I'm going with and I recommend it as well. I got to hold one on a rifle and could not believe the difference it made with a different angle vs the moe maid grip. Also the + is rubberized like Mark said. Super nice grip!!

One caveat on the Hogue grip; it's really grippy. I took a rifle class not long ago and it was quite hot. The rubber does a fantastic job of providing grip even if your hands get a little sweaty. Unfortunately, after a lot of gun manipulation over 4 days, my shooting hand got a little red in the webbing between the thumb and forefinger.
For most of your shooting this won't be an issue. I just wanted to mention it.

Good to know. Mine has only seen a few hours here and there at the range. It is quite "grippy".
For extended use, I'll want to make sure I'm wearing gloves.
I have to do that with military issued rifles but for a different reason. My finger gets sore from where the stock winter guard attaches to the lower. Both of my personal rifles have an enhanced trigger guard, so that is not an issue.

I found the exact same thing with my Hogue. I was really kinda put off about it, I really wanted to like the hogue, and did, until I spent some time with it. It became so grippy, it was almost sticky.
I felt like every time I let go that I was getting sticky residue on my hand. Of course, I wasn't but even now, when I pull it out of the package I remember how that felt. I kept throwing dust on my hand before manipulating my rifle in scenarios. Dude asked me if I was "chalking" the bat! HA.
Really though, for me it was really nice until a little more use that a simple range trip. I recently bought and installed a BCM 3 pistol grip and won't look back. I still love the way it just fits though.

Gloves are a good idea when it will be used a lot, like 8 hours.
For general use, I love the Hogue grip. One thing I really like is how it works in any weather. Wet, dry, cold or hot, it just works well.

Are either one of these grips over sized? that's one of the big issues of the stock grip is it feels so small in my hand.

I don't like my BCM grip, I much prefer the rubberizied overcoating of the Magpuls to the full plastic of the BCM. I'll sell my BCM cheap if anyone wants it.

This. I love the Magpul plus' rubberized overmolding, I need to try one of the K2+s with the steeper grip angle to see if I like the angle.

If you are looking for a grip that gives you a little more to grab give Ergo Tactical Deluxe grip a look/squeeze.

Get Over It
You guys are so spoiled with all your "custom" accessories for different weapons that you forget the prime purpose of the rifle. When I did my time, no one had access to "upgrades" for their GI issue rifle (M-16). You shot it as it came and learned to do it well because your life really did depend on it. The whole trend these days is keeping tons of "aftermarket" goodies manufacturers in business because everyone has to have the latest whatever on their AR-15. I'm surprised that most of these custom rifles even fire correctly with all of the BS on them.

No disrespect but changing a grip out hardly makes it a "custom" rifle, it's one screw and has no impact on the function of the rifle (if you don't lose the selector detent lol). I do agree though, and have been guilty of myself in the past, that there is a tendency to over modify / fit fancy bits with no understanding of why they are being fitted beyond "they look cool" and "I read it on the internet", but hey if people want to do it it's their money.

How did we go from swapping a pistol grip to bashing all AR customizations and add on parts.
Anyway, my favorite grips are the Magpul MOE+ in either the standard version or the K2 version depending on what grip angle you want. All of my rifles but 1 (my Sport no less) have the MOE+s.

I think the Magpul MOE+ grips are really nice. I have them on both my ARs.

First of all Thank You for your service.
Just wondering If you had options to choose from when you were in service wouldn't you have used them?

It's good to know there are options for the grip even though it's an extra cost. I'm in the market for a budget AR but the single "teat" on the S&W Sport II grip just doesn't float my boat. I was leaning toward the Ruger for just that reason but wouldn't mind swapping out the grip.

Have a Hogue rubber grip on a couple of AR15s, one black and one green. It's a good grip. The colored grips absorb less heat than the black grips. Both are the older style. Hogue now has one that extends further up the backstrap and fills larger hands better.
Also have an Magpul MIAD grip. While it is a hard grip, it has a good aggressive finish that grips well. Better than the MOE grip. And the MIAD grip is customizable to fit your hand. Well worth the extra money.
Magpul makes variations of the MOE grip to fit various hands or even intended use of the gun. Like the rubber covered MOE+ grip. The slender SL grip is more vertical so the hand is more comfortable when using shorter LOP stocks. The ham handed version is the K2, and the rubber covered version is the K2+.

And yet you overlook the military finding the M16 lacking so they upgraded it to the M16A1 and then the M16A2, and later had specialized versions, the M16A3 and M16A4. And then there are the myriad versions of the carbine, going back to the Colt 605, then the XM177E1 & E2, eventually evolving into the M4. Someone should have told the military that the M16 was good enough and stop changing all that BS on it, right?
The primary purpose of your gun is to hit your target. If better ergonomics, sighting equipment or barrel specs help with that, what is the problem?
One of the main reasons for the popularity of the AR15 is that it is modular. Virtually every single part can be changed to one that suits the user better and it has better ergonomic fit than traditional bolt actions. And unlike custom fitted bolt action stocks, you don't junk replace the entire stock and start over if you want to change the buttstock, forend or grip. The AR15 is adaptable to a staggering variety of iron sights and optics.
As far as bolt on accessories, they are external to the gun and have no bearing on the reliability of the internal parts. The barrel, bolt carrier group and fire control group don't know if the gun has iron sights, a scope or a red dot optic on it.
All of my customized with BS AR15s fit me better and outshoot my old A1 versions. I keep the old ones around for nostalgia and for vintage tactical matches.
