I'd need some advice on the initial cleaning before going to the range. Websites or links to videos on how to clean and suggestions on cleaning supplies I'm gonna need. I was thinking of building my own cleaning station instead of spending $70 or more on one of from the big box retailers. What do you guys think??? Thanks!

I didn't watch the video, but if they didn't mention the CAT M4 tool, run out and get one. Makes cleaning the bolt & carrier a snap.

Either that or the CRT tool by Kley-Zion. That's what I use and it works quite well.

First time? Make sure you get any brown greasy gunk off everything...if there is any there. My Sport didn't have any brown gunk but my Colt had tons.

S&W lay out their recommended cleaning and maintenance procedures on pages 38 & 39 of the owner's manual. Since they built the rifle, I follow what they say. As far as supplies, I bought a $10 Hoppe's cleaning kit at Academy and it has everything the S&W owner's manual says I need except for a .22 caliber bore brush, but Academy had those hanging above the cleaning kits for $2.

My kit. Really happy. The rod is several pieces and I cannot tell it once I've put it together. No lip at the section laps, and you can really tell its machined by folks who care about that. It's steel so I use the bore guide to prevent unwanted chamber abrasions. I completely recommend Pro Shot's stuff. Very high quality, and MADE IN USA.

And check out FrogLube. Good stuff. Makes your AR smell nice too, think peppermint breath from the back end of your polished hole-puncher. Good stuff indeed.

FrogLube is a blend of oils and additives consisting primarily of coconut oil.

It is a perfectly good lubricant for normal use.

But, be aware that like any organic oil, at prolonged exposure to elevated temperature and pressures, it will "cook" and turn into something reminiscent of caramel.

Keep in mind that on page 38 of the owner's manual, S&W recommends nothing more than the use of a "high quality firearms oil". So, the small bottle of 3-in-1 or other light machine oil that you pick up at Wal-Mart or the hardware store is all that S&W says you need.

Highly recommend ........ Clean with Ballistol and use Grizzly Grease to lube

Didn't know this, thanks. I've never done enough high volume high speed shooting to see the evidence I guess. I'm not a full auto guy though. Could also work better in my piston gun than a DI gun, that I wouldn't know. I do like the stuff though. I use it on all the pins in the hinges on my doors and cabinets. Works like a charm. Stays put, and no more squeaks. Has the added benefit of being green.

It's been known to gum up in pretty frigid weather too. If you don't live in a northern State, that might not be a problem but there is still the heat issue.

I just recently started using GRIZZLY GREASE. It has a spearmint minty smell. And, it's some great CLP! It made the top 4 best CLP's of 2016.
I also use 3 IN 1 oil, and, a 90% M1 10W30 oil + 10% MERCON V transmission fluid mixture for lube.

Ballistol and Hurleys gold works well for me......................................but the rails on the handguns have always got slide glide
