Question Which Trigger?

I still have the factory trigger in my Sport 1, which is A LOT better than the trigger in my AR-556. But, I am thinking about replacing both, depending on if I am able to sell one of my firearms that is not needed/wanted anymore.
Here are (3) triggers that CTD has on sale. The first (2) are very competitive with one another, but, the 3rd posted trigger, I have no clue about it. Opinions on which one "YOU" would install in my AR's?

PNT. IMHO. Worth every penny, and not nearly as many of those either...

It greatly depends on what the gun is being used for... target, hunting, defense, etc?

Intended use should dictate gear, accessories and upgrades!

If you are looking strictly at single stage triggers I would look at the ALG and the BCM both are high quality and should serve you well.

AIM Surplus has the ALG with free shipping @ the same price.

I would go with the ALG if I was after a single stage trigger, it is manufactured by Mr Geissele after all. I like the ACT vs the QMS I think the coating is worth the extra bucks. Use the lower power purple spring and combine it with a Joe Bob's set screw trigger adjuster grip screw to take out all the creep and it's a really fine single stage trigger.

I would go ALG as well myself. It's one of the best upgrade triggers out there for the money. It won't compare to a Geissele but for the price, it's pretty darn good.

I like two stage triggers. I've got RRA two stage match triggers on a couple of my AR's. RRA also sells a 3.5lb varmint trigger for those that want a trigger with less weight than a NM.

Well.... if you're interested in punching paper while shooting from bags as you earlier posted on the Forum, you might consider a trigger with less pull weight than a slicked-up GI trigger like ALG describes-- Pull weight is generally 6.5lbs, never lower than 5.5lbs, never higher than 9.5lbs. If you're looking for a trigger to suit a duty rifle including gloved shooting in winter, the ALG description might well fit.

You have to first understand what you want and why. Once you figure that out, then look at different trigger choices in the category.

For example... Is a trigger with a pull weight advertised as somewhere between 6-9lbs what you're looking for? If so, why? If you can't answer that, you're not ready to start comparing triggers for purchase let alone digesting what others think you should do.

Wilson Combat TTU single stage 4lb best fit my criteria. But that has nothing to do with what might best fit your criteria.

Agree with ChattanoogaPhil, you need to decide what you'll use it for.

My rifles are set up to be able to use for SD, but I also use them to punch paper. I also like a 2 stage better. That being said, for the money it's really, really hard to beat the Geissele G2S. Really.

Mostly, to punch paper. My home, carry, and vehicle SD is taken care of.
BTW, I ordered a red dot sight. Oops, wrong section/thread to post.

What distance are you shooting? Are you looking to shoot sub MOA groups or just hitting paper and ringing steel?

I personally like 2 stage triggers because I can "prep" them which is similar to how I run pistols. YMMV.

To punch paper you need a 2 stage IMO, slam dunk.

Actually, both.
When I was in the military we had the Vietnam era M-16A1 rifles. That's what I learned to shoot with in the M-16/AR field. After I was discharged I bought a Ruger Ranch Mini-14. That was one fine rifle, yeah! But, I had to sell it, with the rest of my collection.
Then, in 2012, I saw the S&W Sport 1 and wanted it! All I was intending to do with it was to shoot coyotes and plink. Being I'm disabled, it took me almost 3 years to save up for the AR-556. I chose it because of the QC of it over the Sport 2. But, when I made that decision it was based upon the Sport 2 I had rented at a LGS to decide on which AR I was going to buy next. The rented Sport 2 was very used. The AR-556 that I shot at the LGS was brand new. Decision made!
But, like before, I just want to basically plink with it as well. I do miss the PSA AR's I built back in the day.

I'm still waiting for Savage to start making an AR Accutrigger... Sigh. Maybe someday they will see the light.

It sounds like you might want a general purpose trigger then. I went with a Geisselie SSA with a 4.5# trigger so I could still use the rifle in the field but not be a detriment at the range. It won't win me any range matches but it will be light enough and smooth enough to get decent groups when punching paper. As long as I do my part of course. Good shooting starts and stops with the shooter. The better equipment is just gravy.

Goes on sale often for $29.99. I have 2 and an ALG ACT. I prefer the PSA enhanced trigger.

Question

Can someone please educate me on this trigger? I saw it on CTD's website and it states that it's great for a spare, or, "your" next build. To me, I basically see a stock trigger that entry level AR companies install to keep costs down.

It's a standard mil-spec trigger with the contact surfaces polished to remove grittyness and the parts coated with nickel, which should also add some lubricity. Basically the same as an ALG ACT with a different coating material.

I have a CMC 3.5# trigger in my Sport an it works very well for me.
I may have been better off with a 3# trigger but only because my hands are in really bad shape.
It is single stage, installs easily and has worked out really well.

What is your complaint with the stock triggers?

Too heavy of pull?
Too much creep (travel)?
Gritty?

Any trigger under $125 will most likely be no better than what you already have.

Like TAC said, save your money if you're wanting to upgrade what you have.

I know it says.... LBE Unlimited was developed to answer the needs of Elite Task Force team's world wide who demand top performing gear with no room for error..... but you might consider putting that in the same category as the red dot you just purchased with a stated waterproof rating to ten meters for thirty minutes but in reality didn't last for 10 seconds in a cup of water.

My general advice is to resist the lure of thinking you're getting something for nothing. That nothing can add up in a hurry and fill an AR parts box.

Better triggers will give you specs and details as to why you would want to spend more money on their product, whether it be surface polishing or some sort of surface treatment.

An ALG is about $50 if you want a basic improved trigger and I think their next model is about $10 more for a lesser pull weight than the stock 5.5-9# pull weight. The base ALG just makes the pull smoother than stock and tends to favor the lower end of the stock range. The upper model gives you a 4.5# pull with the purple spring.

Reviews I've seen on the trigger says it comes with both the purple spring and the standard spring. If you have issues with light strikes on hard primers with the purple spring, install the other spring instead. But your trigger pull will go up to 6#. I'm providing this all from memory, so check out the facts and see if either of these will work for you and if the info I'm giving is hitting all the marks.

Answer: Unless you're shooting competitively (in which case, why did you buy these particular guns?), my answer would be: "None of the above".

The old adage is that you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Similarly, a new trigger is not going to turn an "entry-level" AR into a "tack driver".

I would keep the factory trigger in both the S&W and the Ruger.

You can certainly replace a sow's ear trigger with a silk purse trigger.

It's true that if you put the rifle in a mechanical vice changing the trigger isn't going to have much affect on accuracy. However, when a human has their hands on the rifle a trigger can have a significant influence on the shootabilty of the rifle which translates to accuracy.

An overly heavy, gritty, stacking, inconsistent trigger contributes to inconsistent shooting. In other words, the human part of the equation degrades from the potential accuracy of the rifle. That makes the trigger key for any rifle, from "entry level" to high dollar custom "tack drivers".

It's been my observations over the years that a good trigger is the single most important upgrade for an AR to improve shootabliltiy, speed and accuracy, particularly offhand shooting.

Agreed. A good trigger makes the most difference in any firearm.

After that, I think it's a toss up between a scope and free floating the barrel but it depends and the conditions and range you are shooting at. Close range both will be of marginal benefit. I've seen some people do some pretty good shooting, even at long range, with just a trigger upgrade.

Don't spend any money. Do the 15 minute trigger job: 15 Minute Practical Trigger Job for the AR-15

I have done this to two guns. No misfires or light primer strikes. Still a little bit of creep, but you're not making a match trigger here. Really smooths it out and makes a very nice trigger for no money.

I just read that ad in my emails. Those are some of the best triggers on the market, from all of the research I have done on AR triggers.
