Default Heading to the range, what do you use?

Just wondering what is the most common method shooters use to carry their weapons/gear and ammo to the range.

Normally I place my weapons on the front or rear seat out in the open and all my ammo/eye/ears plus cleaning gear is in an old backpack.

Just wondering if there is any real benefit to the custom "range bags" or even the rifle bags that have all the molle pouches attached outside the case.

My backpack is getting old and starting to fray and deteriorate on the inside so I'm in the market.

Normally I take an AR, 870 shotgun and a couple pistols plus ammo for each.

The AR is new so with the extra weapon plus ammo and mags my old backpack isn't going to make it.

Whats your preferance?

I don't have a case that would carry the rifle , all ammo and gear in it.
Even if I did , I wouldn't be able to lift it.
Gun goes in it's gun case , ammo into an ammo box and shooting gear goes into a range bag.

Okay, I have to change my vote to #3, weapon in hand, ammo and gear in a range bag. I had pistols on my mind when I voted #4.

I carry my rifles in a soft case. Ammo and gear in a Midway AR 15 bag.

MidwayUSA AR-15 Tactical Range Bag

I have a similar bag for pistols, ammo, and gear.

MidwayUSA Competition Range Bag System

When you say "in hand" let me clarify that my guns are in their own cases carried separately from the ammo and other range equipment which is in a dedicated range bag designed for that purpose. I also take an old wool army blanket to cover the bench to keep from scratching the guns I have out of their cases.

Christmas is coming and I'm trying to decide on a standard rifle soft case or one of the fancy soft cases with the pouches.

Anyone have pics of their 'heading to range" setups?

All guns brought to the range are cased. I have a rolling luggage designed for airline under seat storage, that I got at Costco for $30, that's been a great range bag.

This is the bag, from Amazon, but it's much less at Costco.

I have hard and soft long gun cases that hold from one to three long guns. I have hard and soft handgun cases that hold from one to six handguns. I have a range bag, a cleaning kit in a large tool box, a large tool box, an ammo case, a large spotting scope, and a large tripod.

Some or all go to the gun club with me depending on what I am shooting and why I am shooting. I hate it when I get to the gun club with everything except targets.

The pistols I take are in my range bag and the rifles are in gun cases. My ammo is brought in an ammo can.
If its an AR 15 its in one of these cases.

This is difficult to answer, because I don't have one single answer... it all depends on what I am doing at the range that day.

If I am planning to only shoot my ARs, I take my my AR bag that holds two rifles and has pouches for magazines, small cleaning kit, eyes and ears, etc. Usually has an AR in 5.56 and a .22lr AR. Magazines are pre-loaded and ready to go. Drawback to this bag is that once it is loaded, it is heavy!

If I am planning for a pistols only day, I pack everything in my range bag.

Some days are shotgun only, on the skeet and sporting clays course. Those days are usually shotguns in cases, a couple of cases of shells, shell pouch belt, foam ears on a string attached to back of ball cap and sunglasses.

And on days we shoot everything, the back seat of the truck is full of long gun cases, both hard and soft, range bags, ammo cans, coolers... looks like we are moving in.

Ninety percent of the time, a trip to the range is actually a match. En route, the rifle is cased and separated from the ammo.

At the range, I break out my 2 Gunner jogger, and I place my rifle in the rack. Folding chair, camera tripod and shooting mat go on a shelf of the jogger. Ammo (and the rest when I am shooting F Open), goes on the lower shelf. My score book, binoculars, and other stuff goes into my backpack. Being disabled, I have to be resourceful.

When I am shooting handguns, if it is a bullseye match, pistols go in the pistol box, ammo in an ammo can. If a PPC match, I have a PPC box, pistol gets holstered at the car. If it is just a general practice session, boxed pistols, a tote with range necessities, and ammo in a can.

They have the Drago style in stock at our local Academy sports so I'll go check them out, thanks. Also, any zipper issues? The Drago Amazon reviews have a lot with broken zippers, just wondering if this issue has been resolved?

I have 2 of these for my m&p 15's.......

Allen Smith & Wesson M&P 42" Discreet Arms Case | DICK'S Sporting Goods

Has storage for 4 mags, cleaning kit, and alot of smaller items in the outside pockets. Case seems pretty good for the price. Will hold scoped, or red dot ar's.

I use a range bag for ammo, ear muffs, hand guns, and any other range accessories i need.

Indoor LGS and Gun Club Ranges require fire arms to be carried unloaded in a case or bag. I have a medium size bag for pistols and ammo , I keep the rifles in soft cases. I take a target stand to use at the WMA outdoor range, water and small first aid kit. I also take along some bug spay in the summer

With the exception of my EDC pistol, which is always holstered at my side, I use a soft (ballistic nylon) range bag for both the other pistols, ammo, and all of the ancillary gear.

The rifles are also transported empty, and inside of a soft case. (Which is a legal requirement where I live — No loaded long arms inside of any vehicle.)

I, 'bum' absolutely nothing from other shooters — Most of whom I don't even want to know unless I'm an RSO, or instructor for that day. I don't go to the range to socialize. I go to: train, teach, and/or supervise; and that is, pretty much, it. What is more, I consider training time to be almost, 'sacred'; and, when I'm training, I very much dislike being distracted, or otherwise interrupted by anyone for anything.

I keep everything in this minus my ammo can of range ammo.. Rifle, 10 extra loaded mags, bottle of oil, boresnake, chamber flag, some coyote calls, sharpie, CAT tourniquet, and some rolled gauze.

Then I keep my other guns in their respected cases with ammo in their respected cans. Remington 700 has a notebook and pen and a boresnake in it's case, shotguns just have the shotgun in the case, handgun case just has the gun, spare mags, and boresnake in it. So yeah, my AR case carries the necessities as it is my "go to" gun. The Glock never is in a case unless it has to be, if not, it's on my body and it's to get me to a bigger gun.

Due to being in Kalifornia with a bunch of dumb-azz laws looking to make you into a criminal, I transport all guns in locked containers (typically Pelican hard cases) and ammo in separate locked containers.

That's how I'm use to going as well, I just retired after 22yrs with the 82nd Airborne in 2013 and have never been to a civilian rifle range. Just indoor pistol ranges. Here I am downrange, Baghdad.

Where I live, I want to keep a low profile. I use a very large Adidas gym to carry my guns and gear. Any rifles I have are breakdown models and fit inside the bag.

Need another category or two. Rifles in soft cases, ammo and gear in range bags. Some times more than one trip to the vehicle is necessary.

That is a very nice bag. Where did you get it?

I suggest that on all polls like this that there be a "none of the above" option.

Just wondering what is the most common method shooters use to carry their weapons/gear and ammo to the range.
  • Rifles and pistols are field stripped and locked in hard side cases.
  • Ammunition, in the plastic ammo boxes it is normally stored in, is packed into a cardboard box along with magazines, targets and a three-ring binder containing all of the loading data sheets for the ammunition being transported.
  • My chronograph, tools, cleaning supplies and small tools go into a nylon bag. It's not a purpose-built "range bag"; it actually came with the hardware for one of my medications, but it didn't fit that need very well and was the ideal size for the chronograph.

The private range I use has cleaning rods and other supplies available to members so I usually only travel with minimal tooling.

bought mine last year from walmart.com for $30 something shipped to my local wallyworld. i was browsing through the shooting stuff to use up a gift card i found and stumbled upon it so i figured why not get one for my m&p? tossed a thin red line american flag patch on it as well

it's made by allen and they make a few different types branded with the m&p logo. just google allen m&p rifle case. mine is the 38" double rifle case.

No disrespect taken. It actually was a great example of what I'm use to, Wearing everything I need for the range on my person!

Now that I'm older, retired and disabled I'm just looking at the more comfortable way to go shoot but not look like the tacticool guy that brings to much just to get a zero and and then confirm my zero.

So far I'm really liking the looks of the double soft cases with pouches, I've dropped the hint to my wife. So If one isn't under the tree Christmas morning I'll go get one.

For some reason my wife thinks because I bought my AR in December that that is my present, silly woman!

I'm with ya on that one. I was in a gun store recently and sent my wife a pic of the hang tag on a case I want. Dec 25th I'll find out if my hint worked. If I know my wife, it will.

Plenty of ammo:

All wrapped up in a neat package.

Plus two range boys to haul it too the line.LOL.....and no, I don't carry that much ammo, but could if SHTF.

didn't wait! I put my support foot forward, brushed my cover jacket aside, took a combat stance, and reached for my holster - My surprisingly empty holster! There I was with an empty holster, two extra magazines, and no gun! He glared at me; and, without any other options, I narrowed my eyes and started back at him. I had to think fast; and, without any viable alternatives, I decided my best chance to survive against this fellow, who was younger and much larger than I am, was to do my best imitation of, 'faking it'. So, with my gun hand at my side and from a gunman's crouch, I yelled at him, 'Don't make me do it!'

Long guns always go to the range in a case...................

I have several rifles set up for "grab and go" with extra mags some ammo and slings etc......... for a quick trip to the range, cabin or SHTF.

These range from:

My CZ 452 FS/mannlicher in .22mag; which is my "Walk in Penn's Woods" rifle and goes to the cabin every trip. (rifle/scope, 3 mags, 100rds and sling)

to a

Ruger Mini-14 (with several loaded 5,10 &20 rd mags and 100rds of extra ammo);
a Ruger 10/22 take-down ( comes in it's own case w/ space for extra mags and ammo) and
my S&W 15/22 ( which makes frequent range trips)

I have 2 range bags packed and ready to go...... if I get a chance to go to the range for an hour or so (it's only 7 miles / 10 minutes away ) I don't want to waste time packing ......

I like the "tactical style bags" for the pockets..... for matching rifle, magazine(s) and ammo.

When I go to the outdoor range, I always overpack. First off is eye and ear protection. Besides rifles and pistols in soft and hard cases, I take an ammo can with extra ammo, water jug (we don't have potable water on site), gunsmithing tools, toilet paper, stool, spotting scope, insect repellent, sun screen, my own target frame and targets, hammer and stakes to secure target frame to ground, staple gun with extra staples. I've probably forgotten something! I use handy totes to carry some stuff, ammo cans for other and MTM cases for other things. I always overpack, because when I need something, I want to have it there. Luckily I have a full size pickup.

I got this last year, and am loving it! Only for handgun, separate soft rifle case (if rifles go along). Watch for a sale - I got it from Jet for $79.

Bringing this back up to update.

Now that I've been able to go to our local range I see what everyone was talking about with needed more options on the "poll".

It seems now that I don't have to carry everything on my person to go to the range My truck back seat keeps getting fuller and fuller with range gear.

I've started cutting back and have it down to a couple rifle cases that carry all three of my rifles and all the ammo in my 10 mags, a range bag with assorted tools/eye/ears/cleaning stuff a spotter scope w/ tripod and a small yeti cooler.

This is still too much in my opinion and normally I have to make a couple trips but it's so much more relaxing having all the comforts there if you need them!

Have ammo I will use that day and ear plugs and ear muffs in a large ammo case and weapons in their own cases .. in a small ammo case I keep a range cleaning and oil kit I've made up that is separate from my home cleaning kit ..

I have taken my AR15 and a couple of pistols in the hard AR case I have .. I have my carry on body till I get to the range and then its removed ... Range has a policy of no drawing and firing from a holster so no holstered weapons on range property due to insurance.. and because ex-member's couldn't follow rules of the club .. even if you are licensed to carry ..

I don't understand 'weapon in hand.'
It's steering wheel in hand.
I usually wear an open carry revolver - open carry state.
The other guns and ammo are in a range bag.
I have never carried gun cleaning supplies to the range.

Default ear muffs?

I carry all my gear in a double carbine case as well. In addition to various tools, it holds both my AR's, 10 mags or more , several boxes of extra ammo, and still has room for a couple pistols and ammo if I want to take them also. It is pretty heavy with two AR's and all those loaded mags and ammo, so I use the back pack straps and carry it like a back pack.

I've tried using earmuffs and they interfere with my cheek placement on the stock, so I just use ear plugs. Am I missing something or is there a type of earmuff that won't hit the stock?
