Looks like a lot of work, but not my cup of tea. Guess I'm too fussy, but I try keeping my guns looking like new. I have a 1972 Remington Nylon 66 that I bought new and it still looks that way. To each their own.......

Lots of work. Would drop $100-$150 off the price for me, at least . . .

(edit: Of course, like Grandma Muggins always said, there's a lid for every pot . . . )

Next time ship it to somebody "playing over in the Sandbox." After 6 months it'll probably look just like that. Joe

I dig the desert look, but I would do the whole gun like that. I've thought about doing one of my AR's in a desert camo, but I don't live near a desert.

Not bad. Got the rifle looking field worn just the way you want. Good job man.

Camo I get... especially when the upper matches the lower. But worn Krylon camo upper with drug behind the pickup lower? Sorry, not feeling it.

I wanted the lower to have the appearance of the paint wearing off the black. That was the reason behind it.

Forgive my humor for a sec...Picture Ricky walking in on Lucy saying "Lucy, what have you done" !!.. Now back to reality...I am hoping you are looking to remedy this paint job. In most cities you need to look for shops that soda blast. Yes, baking soda is blasted much like sand blasting but without the damaging effects.

I prefer to create that "used" look the old fashioned way - by actual use.

If I knew who Ricky and Lucy were it might be funny...... if you're not a fan that's cool. Really doesn't matter.

Well, it definitely looks distressed. I suppose you'll be hammering a crack in the sight lens and smashing the light?

Whatever floats your boat.

I had a pristine 45-70 Springfield trapdoor rifle that I sold to my brother some 45+ years ago when I needed some money. For some reason, I'm reminded of the regret every time I see a "distressed" rifle.

Not bad as far as painting goes.

None of my main guns look anywhere near new but none were painted. I'd say I'm not into new looking, I'm into using. I think my P220 has 40% finish left. It's a tool not a decoration

I get it. I've seen the same thing with AKs. People sand the bluing till it looks used. Looks cool I just don't care what the finish is or looks like. I'm more concerned about function. Finish is just a "paint" has no bearing on actual use. I'm more interested in getting them too look like that naturally. Lots of use.

I actually have a stupid question that I could probably google, but I don't feel like it at the moment.

What is the painting process for a weapon? I actually REALLY want to paint an AR15 in all sorts of crazy girly colors, no clue how to paint a weapon though.

I like it but I prefer the old school method of use wearing the finish. To me, a firearm is a tool and not a show piece. So I don't worry about wear too much. Not that I mistreat my firearms either...

High temp spray paint, cerakote or duracoat. Just search it on Youtube, I'm sure you'll find some info.

Edit: you could also have it dipped, that's where things get artistically creative.

Can we see a picture of the whole finished rifle? Kind hard to see how it looks overall with the pictures focused only on small parts of it.

I get the "to each his own/different strokes" thing, no problem, but sometimes it just gets pointlessly ridiculous,self-indulgent, and counter-productive.
I follow the local/statewide classified sites pretty closely, and I routinely see perfectly good, very popular guns come up all the time, that somebody drastically screwed with trying to make it "their own", and then later they're frustrated and disappointed that nobody wants the damn thing when they try to sell or trade it. (and despite anyone's belief they're never getting rid of it, you can't possibly be sure of that).
Again, the OP is obviously free to do as he likes, and if he's happy, then that's great, I stipulate to all that, but purposely wrecking the re-sale potential of a perfectly good item for no real substantive reason, just isn't a real swift idea.

It's pretty (no pun intended) common these days actually:

Take a look at some of these:

(and despite anyone's belief they're never getting rid of it, you can't possibly be sure of that).
Again, the OP is obviously free to do as he likes, and if he's happy, then that's great, I stipulate to all that, but purposely wrecking the re-sale potential of a perfectly good item for no real substantive reason, just isn't a real swift idea.
Maybe he does not buy guns with an eye on selling them later. I don't, I just keep getting bigger cabinets.

Nemo makes a few ar-15/ar-10s that have that finish. They get a lot of money for that stuff. I actually live in near the desert, I painted one of my ar-15's that tan color, after a few years dragging it through classes and shoots, mine looks similar to yours. One day, I'll strip off he old paint and either go back to black or tan and start all over again. I like the finish you put on that rifle, and I admire the work you put into it.

Well Mark it's a $500 rifle. It's not like it was 1 of only 100 produced and cost $5,000. I really liked the idea of something different, I do that to all my guns and bows. I'm not worried about resale as I have no intention of selling it.

That's all well and good, but again, realistically, very, very few people can be truly positive they'll never want or need to let something go.
Virtually ALL of the jacked up Glocks (and other stuff) I mentioned regularly seeing on the Georgia classified sites, were done by people that fully intended to keep them.
They sure as hell didn't grind and stiple the frame, undercut the trigger guard, have porting and other maching done to the barrel and slide, change the trigger and sights, have it cerakoted or plated........because they thought it increased the resale value !!!! (cuz it don't, at least not anywhere near what they have in it. )
They ALL did that **** because they thought it was cool to have something "unique" that they were never getting rid of it.
Then, they have to post "PRICE DROP" as they steadily come down from that overly optimistic $1200 asking price !!
But again, you can do what you want, no harm no foul, but keep in mind, you posted this on a discussion board, which invites opinions, so you can't really get too offended when people weigh in that this is a less-than-stellar idea.

I will give M&P-Lover credit... he has taken the opinions posted here in stride. I admire his ability to simply state that he likes it, and if you do too that is cool, but if not, that's cool too. Doesn't seem to be upset with those of us who don't care for his handi-work on this particular rifle.

I don't know why people don't paint their AR15s. I understand why people don't paint their other guns. A black ar15 sticks out like a sore thumb it's a tool not a show gun. Good job

Yeah I kind of like it. Had the OP done the lower like the upper, it would have been awesome. Still, it's kind of cool for me.

Well, if you aren't a soldier or a hunter, what reason would you have to paint your AR? My hammer is a tool too, but I don't paint it. My wrenches aren't painted either!

None of my hunting guns are painted either though. Most have wood stocks and bluing. A couple are all black, just like my AR.

My friend is a Dallas cop and tonight I saw him on the news standing watch at the airport with his AR. That black gun really stood out against his bright, high visibility yellow jacket... I'm guessing that is kinda the point!

I would like it more if the lower matched the upper... still wouldn't be something I would do, but would look better to me.

I'm just giving my own personal opinion. I don't want someone spotting me a mile off holding a black rifle if SHTF situation. I use rustoleum camo paint that can be stripped off to its original black color if I so choose. Why do special forces paint their guns?

Just make sure to paint it colors that match your surroundings. I'm from Appalachia Mountains and I see people painting them desert khaki.

"Uh oh, careful, boys, we got us a serious playa, here !!"
Spotted a mile off? Chances would be pretty good that the "spotter" is one of two persons: Either the person behind the spotting scope, or the sniper already clicking you in with his .50 BMG...in which case the round will reach you long before you are in any sort of range for spray n pray. The above listed 2 person(s) ARE the "S" in SHTF situations.

Just sayin.

Play nice. Your vision may not always match that of others. This is a good forum and we should all be able to show off what we think is cool without a bunch of negativity from the peanut gallery. I am pretty sure paint doesn't affect the performance of AR type rifles.
