Ive been glued to the internet for hours searching any pictures of the sport 2 and only found 1 that is similer but looks more like a glare in the pic.

The way u see mine in the pic is they way it looks inperson.

I highly dought the gun store will do a return based only on the argument of a color discrepency.

Should i call Smith & Wesson?

Thats going to be my arguement with nexxus tomorrow morning when they open. The lighting inside there store is nice to give off that "tacktical" effect with all the guns on display bit its sure not good for seeing imperfections like this one.

One of my M&P-15 Sport II's has a decicidedly different reflectivity from that of the lower, much like yours. I noticed that cleaning the entire rifle and oiling the entire outside as specificed on pages 38 & 39 of the manual greatly minimized the differences.

I wonder what's up with recent Sport IIs? Mine does not look like that. I got my Sport II back at the beginning of March. You can also see the same thing in this recent video.

They are shipped with preservative covering every metal part. When cleaned thoroughly and then wiped down with CLP or another gun oil they will look black. The upper and lower may not be exactly the same color like hdwhit found out because they are anodized in different batches.

I don't believe it is a quality control issue.

Should have bought a Ruger AR-556.
My cousin bought a Sport II a few months go that looked the same way. After cleaning it it magically turned black!
Seriously, he used my GRIZZLY GREASE CLP to clean and lube his Sport II. It had a "cosmoline" type protectant on it.

Early this a.m. I was looking at a un-fired NIB Spikes middy on one of the local classified sites, and what immediately struck me was that the upper had this same "plum" color. I thought it was very odd, and don't recall ever seeing that before, but didn't give it any more thought till running across this thread.
I was going to go dredge up the ad and post it here, just for illustration/comparison, but I'm thinking that's some sort of rule violation?

I have two M&P-15 Sport IIs. One of them was as described in Loxboy 1's post; essentially "green" in color. A thourough cleaning and oiling brought the color back to being closer to what I expected based on the uniformly black color of my other M&P-15, but it was not the same.

Some difference in the color produced by the anodizing is to be expected and I accept that mine are within the range of those results that S&W found satrisfactory, but for those customers expecting a "black" rifle, the range of variation in the anodizing that is evidenced by my two Sport IIs suggest that S&W's quality control "tolerance" is far broader than many customers would find acceptable - and in that respect, it IS a quality control issue.

On a related side-note here, I recently started a thread asking about color and texture variances in the bolt carriers on the Sport II's. Mine has a rougher surface texture, and a greenish hue to it (especially visible under extra light), than any of the others I've compared it to. One or two other guys here said theirs looked the same way, but most said theirs had the smooth, satin black finish that seems to be most typical.
So it would appear that it the receiver halves aren't the only parts S&W is puitting out with odd color variations.

I'd just chalk it up to it's a base gun at a base price. Remember they did bring out the II version at the same or very close price as the I version. So some batch coating variations I think are acceptable.

Sorry been away from the fourm. I gave the gun a good cleaning before i left for newyears weekend. I wanted to make sure it was clean and properly oild when i put my first rounds through it.

Yes, after the initial clean it looked less "brown" "plum" but inder certian lights its still very noticeable.

Ive spent many hours on youtube and have knoticed that the early sport II have a color variance compaired to the later sport II.

At the range i laid my sport II next to a sport I under narutal sunlight, couldnt tell a color difference but indoors it is noticeable. The sport I upper and lower matched while my sport II colered different.

While cleaning my glock 23 gen 3 and my sportII after shooting i knoticed the slide on the glock looked similer to the upper reciever under the lighting in my house.

Either way the gun performed flawlessly so im not making a big deal over it. In sunlight outdoors its hardly noticeable. It is better after the first and second cleaning so possible after a few more cleans it will be better.

Thankyou to every one who responded

All in all im happy with my "budget" ar-15 purchase, and to anyone who is looking for a great priced entry level ar-15 thats well built in my opnion dont let this thread discourage you. It realy is a nice gun in my opnion

I do know my Sport I is black with no color variation, be it indoor lighting, or, outdoors in the sun.
If you look at the Ruger AR-556 specs, it reads MATTE BLACK OXIDE finish. A black oxide finish is just that, black. S&W uses an ARMORNITE finish, which is similar to Melonite, Nitride, etc. Ruger uses a Nitride finish to line the barrel rifling. The black oxide is the external finish only.

Black oxide - Wikipedia

This is all I could find out about the S&W ARMORNITE finish. It states that it's a protective coating or finish on firearms.
ARMORNITE Trademark of Smith & Wesson Corp. - Registration Number 4841516 - Serial Number 86626466 :: Justia Trademarks
