Default Wooden speed loader - mag size

After seeing the Youtube videos I have been challenged by some of my coworkers to build one of these. I have seen multiple videos and I think that the one I will set out to make is a "morph" of all of the ones I have seen.

Some of the videos have an inset cut out for the mag. I know that the USGI mags are going to be different, but how different are the Gen 2 and Gen 3 PMags?

The PMag vs Hexmag?

I don't think the gen 2/3 pmags are dimensionally different. I believe the base plate of the gen 3 is slimmer. Unfortunately, finding the golden ratio for your loader dimensions might require you to purchase or borrow whatever you're trying to fit, however, the AR is a modular gun so the overall dimensions of the mags will be similar. I've seen videos of said loaders and there are some tolerances built into the mag portion of the routed wood.

I have seen those videos, to me trying to shove 30 round into a mag in a second or less seems like it would cause harm to the mags, springs, followers etc. I personally wouldnt do it, but each his own.

Not an aspect that I had thought of. Why do you think it would cause harm to the components?

The PMag vs Hexmag?
The difference between the Gen 2 and 3 PMags is small, but significant. There are lots of articles on this on the internet, but the two most significant differences for your project are:
  • Over-insertion tab on Gen 3. This prevents the mag from going to far when inserting with the bolt open.
  • Slimmer base plate on Gen 3. The base plate is just a tad slimmer on Gen 3 PMags.

It's unlikely that either of these will hinder your project in a significant way. As long as you make the recess large enough to fit the Gen 2 base plate, it will most likely work. The over-insertion tab won't make any difference because it's not any larger than the outside dimensions of the body.

There are other differences between the two, but they are either internal or cosmetic and won't affect you at all.

I've never used a hex mag. You should probably buy at least one of each to use for development anyway.

You can't get more simple than this:

The guy said he spent three hours making it but I don't see more than 15 minutes. It doesn't appear to make much difference on the make of the mag since there's no cut out. I see some alignment indicators but I think I'd use a couple of stops on each side of the mag.

The reason I mention this one is that it shows the loader doesn't have to be curved.

The curve I am not worried about making...just take 30 rds and use masking tape to put them together and use a compass to trace the other side.

In my mind the hybrid I am looking to make has the rounded end to dump the rounds and stage them...a curved channel with markings for amount of rounds in the channel. At the bottom instead of having a mag specific cutout have an open bottom for universal fit, then have some form of holder do push down on the mag
