AR endurance at rental range
With all the posts about how long a bolt lasts, or barrel, etc., I found this article interesting.
On bolts, they typically get 20,000 rounds out of their bolts before they see issues... and these are full auto, rental M-4s.
Also, interesting note on Melonite, or nitro-carbonizing, or whatever name you want to go with... The melonited barrel on an HK only went 10,000 rounds before keyholing, where he has had chrome lined barrels that didn't keyhole after 80,000 rounds!
Again, this is full auto and I think the barrel on my Sport is just fine, but interesting none the less.

I just want to share my experience at my LGS when I was choosing my 2nd store bought AR. When I went their to test the current AR's on the market (back in May-June 2016) I owned, and still do, a Sport I with the 5R barrel that was (4.5) years old. I had built a few AR's in the past, but, wanted a new, updated, current, store bought AR.
The Sport II that I had rented was very sloppy. It had been shot A LOT with very little attention to PM! The upper and lower were very loose fitting. The first day I rented it, the rear pop up sight would not even pop up! I took it back to the counter and they installed a new one. While I was there, I asked counter dude if I could exchange it for another Sport II. He said they were all (4) rented out. So, in all fairness, had that Sport II not had been in such bad shape, I would probably own another Sport instead of the current Ruger AR-556 that I chose.

It'd be interesting to know just how much of a beating those Sport II had been through. Along with some other manufactures low tier AR's.
I too still have my original Sport with the 5-R barrel and it's still running like a champ. BUT it's also been taken well care of. Also have had the Ruger AR-556 and SR-556 and both those are holding up very well and also well taken care of. Well used, but not babied OR beaten.
In the long run, It'd be interesting to actually see which one of ALL the lower tier AR-15s do hold up the best. Not just the S&W or Rugers.
