The point is to break up the outline of the gun that's it sorry if I offended anyone.

Special Forces would fall into that category of soldier that I outlined above. But since you brought it up, do you have the training of a special forces soldier? Do you know how to properly camouflage yourself and conceal your movements? A Krylon coated Sport does not make one an "operator".

And your SHTF scenario could be way different than mine. If I live in an urban area, I am more concerned with rioting and looting. In those types of situations, I'm not concerned with a guy "a mile away", but more concerned with the mob outside my door or fence.

Bottom line is ARs today are not only tools, they are expressions of ones individuality, and that's perfectly ok. Lots of people spend lots of money on their guns to personalize them and make them look how they want them to look and there is nothing wrong with that......assuming the gun still functions as intended.

I think some of us may be looking at the OP's work with the wrong eye. He said "It's supposed to be a Post Apocalyptic theme." in an earlier post... With that in mind, maybe it is more art, than camo?

Again, I don't care for his pattern or theme on my rifle, but he did do good work for what he was trying to do.

Much like I wouldn't want the metallic and candy colored paint scheme of a low rider on my daily driver, but I can appreciate the work and the art that went into those cars.

I'm not offended by anyone's opinions of it. I posted it on a public forum for people who also like to do custom work to their AR' could see it. I realized when I did it that most likely more people wouldn't like it than do lol. Either way I'd love to see anyone else's work, if anyone has done a Post Apocalyptic theme.

My wife's hydro dipped Muddy Girl Pink AR-15 will blend right in with her Muddy Girl coat & ammo box.............so what! And we're the ones that dipped it. It was black to start with. Expensive black! Quite artistic actually!

I think that some of the comments on this board, in this thread, border beyond ridiculous. Like in so **** serious! I too enjoy the thoughts, talents, and experimenting, that go into AR builds. Face it, most ARs are for the fun of target shooting, and individual creativity. Not as a tool for a possible once in a lifetime apocalypse.

Uh never claimed to be a Special Forces Operator. Why would you assume because I paint some of my guns I think I'm an "operator"
They do it in part to break up the outline of a rifle. If I want to paint my guns so what.

Ended up selling my favorite AR with an expensive 2 stage trigger & high end barrel, to partially fund another one. I enjoy putting these together (not to mention I have the talent to do so. They work without fail.). Since we had great success in hydro-dipping my wife's AR, I'll probably do a partial hydro-dip on my new one. At least the lower & upper. Might even paint a few parts. Black is black, but can become boring. I'll leave my 300 Blackout......black, I think.

I don't know... maybe the talk of painting your gun, SHTF, not being spotted from a mile away? Like I said, you brought up "Special Forces", not me...

If you want to paint your guns, go right ahead. I pointed out that soldiers and hunters have a legitimate reason for painting the rifle... camouflage... so I obviously know why it is done by those two groups. (And before I get called out on it, I'm using "soldier" generically here... probably should say armed forces )

"Because it is my gun and I want to" is a legitimate reason too, but that doesn't mean everyone is going to like your work.

The op wanted a painted mock battle field pick up looking rifle, his rifle, his paint. Nice thing about this hobby, is that there are all kinds of flavors for all kinds of people. It is not like he hard chromed or cerecoated a registered magnum.

You did a good job with the paint op!

BFPU style is popular, I even have one, it is a Romainian AK parts kit that was built and not refinished

....not to mention, occasionally even a little dissenting opinion that doesn't follow the herd (GASP!!! ) But apparantly that's just negative, hostile, uncivil input from the "peanut gallery". It seems that "discussion board" actually means " happy-safe-place where everyone gets a big pat on the back, and no one says anything that's less than fully supportive".
Hmm, not unlike modern American universities,eh?

My grandfather painted all his tools orange. He did it for two reasons. First, the paint cut down on potential rust. Second, it makes them easy to find. I still have several of them. Most of the paint is worn off, but they're still easy to find and still rust free.

The upper looks like a perfect example of an FDE AR that has seen plenty of use. However, the lower doesn't meet your goals. It looks like a black lower with some white paint on it. Not really distressed.

I'm actually kind of surprised. The upper shows a tremendous amount of skill in achieving the vision. I would love to see you take another shot at the lower. I think you got just a little too much on there to make it looked distressed. It looks painted.

Still, a good job.

I do prefer to stress mine the old fashioned way though.

Yeah I agree. I think I added too much silver as well. I may take some thinner and take off some silver. Just leaving it around mostly the edges and mag well. I learned a lot from this project and next time I do it, it will be better.

Just curious if you have cleaned it after shooting? Seems to me gun cleaning solvents might damage the paint and make a mess of it.

I have shot about 500 or so rounds through it since painting. I added 3 coats of Matte clear coat and it's held up great so far.

I can dig the top, but my $0.02 is that I would have done the lower like the top. Cool effect though, you're more artistic thatn I am!

I believe I'm gonna go with Duracoat or cerakote on the next build. Any of you cerakoted any of your rifles? I like the copper color looks pretty cool in my opinion.

Never saw one like that. Mine is the Mohawk Brown model. I bought it at Sears and Roebuck for about 70 Bucks in 1972. It still shoots like brand new.

These web sites may give you some information:

Remington (Rem.) Nylon .22 Rifles; Nylon 66, 76, 77, 10, 11, 12

NylonRifles.com >> How much is it worth?

Now, back to the topic at hand...............

I kind of like it. I don't think I could pull it off, though. I can't even draw a stick figure.

I guess I watch too much NutnFancy, AKOU...etc...That's what got me into painting or coating my Ar's and AK...lol, but I go through a 1000rounds every 6 weeks or so just as long as they function. Maybe a neon green zombie gun will be next.

I'm with the crowd that likes the upper and lower to match. While I was on active duty in the 82nd Airborne many of our troopers painted their rifles for deployments. And normally after the 12-15 month deployment their rifles looked just like this.

When my wife & I, hydro-dipped her AR-15, we went to the trouble of dipping the upper & lower together. They were masked & painted separately for the base coats. The dip paint doesn't flow between the two sections when pinned together. I'm going to build another .223/556 AR, and dip it some camouflage, or maybe those "skulls". Might dip the upper & lower, and paint the handguard. I'm now past my mid 60's and I like that stuff! Hadn't even looked much at ARs until a couple of years ago.

It's not a style that appeals to me, but I do recognize the artistry that goes into achieving that effect and I am impressed by it.

Well, I always wanted to keep my Sport I factory. But, after seeing the OP's AR, I want my Sport I like this; I call it "THE STRESSED LOOK!"

Just sayin.
Thank you for calling me a piece of **** bub. Because I say I like to paint my rifles. Should show respect where I come from but guess we were raised different. I never said I would have an advantage over a non painted rifle. Just threw a hypothetical that a shiny black rifle stands out.

Where did he call you anything? He said the that the sniper team, the spotter and the guy behind the trigger, are the S when facing you from a mile away. In other words, they are bad news if your hypothetical includes keeping from being spotted.
