Default MP 15 and MP 15-22 any difference besides BCG?

I have a sport 2 that shoots 5.56. My buddy is giving me his cmmg conversion kit so i can shoot .22lr. As I understand it, thats just a BCG and magazine(s).

What is the downside (from the gun) to making my 5.56 a "permanent" .22lr this way? Would I need to change anything else?

No need to change anything else, but If you go on YouTube there are a ton of reviews for the cmmg conversion kit. Downside is rim fire ammo tends to be dirtier than centerfire cartridges and if you shoot lead 22lr it will foul the barrel , so you're gonna have to clean it well and frequently, or at least I would.

Thread title is misleading, there's a LOT of differences between a Sport and a 15-22, while your conversion kit should work it absolutely will not make your Sport into a 15-22, for one the 1:9 twist rate is all wrong for 22LR so don't expect much accuracy.

The M&P 15 and the 15-22 are totally different rifles. You don't make a 15-22 by putting a .22 conversion kit on a 15. You get a 15 with a .22 conversion kit.

So this would be a "range" gun in that I will use it simply when I want to shoot but don't want to spend a ton on ammo. I will be building another AR and using the M&P 15 BCG.

I don't mind spending a LITTLE money to make the .22 better... switch out the barrel seems like a good call. ANything else?

As ARnoob pointed out, the 5.56 mm M&P 15 is quite a different animal from the M&P 15-22. The receivers are not the same materials, nor the same dimensions. The barrels are different.

I have a dedicated CMMG .22lr upper. Going from memory, I believe the twist rate is 1:16 on that rifle, vs. the 1:9 in the Sport 2. I believe the 15-22 is the same. So the twist rate is wrong. Also, the .22lr will have a long jump to hit the rifling in a 5.56 mm barrel which would also affect accuracy.

Another drawback is that with the conversion kit alone, the manual of arms is not 100% identical to the 5.56 gun. You will not have the bolt held open after the last shot. You can add parts to gain this feature with a conversion kit, but a 15-22 has it out of the box.

The conversion kits are made for you to get trigger time with your main set up at a lower ammunition cost. If you are wanting a true .22lr, you are better off buying a dedicated upper or something along the lines of a M&P 15-22.

The bolt on the conversion kit is different from the bolt needed for a dedicated .22lr barrel. The conversion kit has a chamber adapter attached, where the dedicated .22lr bolt has a bolt collar that mates to the .22lr barrel.

Have no idea how hard or what is needed to change those parts around.

hmm, so it sounds like if this is just to practice etc it is a sufficient long term solution. But if I wanted a 22 I could rely on I should buy a 22... is that fair?

Basically...If you want a 22, just buy another rifle. Certain rifles can be had for under $200 if you shop around.

Depends on what you mean by "rely on". If you don't mind shooting a .22lr that is probably a 4 MOA rifle at best, just use the conversion kit and have at it.

If you are wanting a .22lr to hit golfballs at 50 yards, you would be better off with a dedicated .22.

Good advice I received years ago regarding Colt 1911 .22 conversion units also holds true for ARs: if you want a .22, get a .22.

Say a guy has invested a fair amount of money building his Sport to suit his wants/needs... trigger, handguard and all the rest. He wants more trigger time with his rifle with an option for cheaper shooting and isn't concerned about precision paper punching. A conversion kit is a very good solution.

Say a guy has a lot of money in his Sport lower and would like to use the lower for shooting rimfire with good accuracy. Something like a CMMG dedicated upper is a very good solution.

Simply using a conversion kit in a standard AR for a dedicated rimfire shooter has the least appeal. I'd consider selling the AR and buying a rimfire rifle or keeping the AR and getting a dedicated .22 upper for it. You'll end up getting another lower anyway and have two rifles.

Then there's rimfire insane guys like me... CMMG dedicated, Palmetto lower, Timney trigger, Sparrow.. on and on and on.

I have a S&W M&P 15-22 and a S&W Sport II and I enjoy shooting both at the range. My S&W 15-22 has never failed to feed and is fun to shoot and my Grandkids love shooting it.
