Default American Eagle ammo.. damaged goods?

When I first purchased my Sport Two, I went ahead and grabbed a box of a 150 American Eagle ammo. 5.56 62 grain. in an Unopened box..

Anyway, While loading a Mag, I happen to notice this..

This does not give me a nice warm and fuzzy feeling..
thoughts?

I have yet to inspect the rest, ran across this almost right off the bat, so I highly doubt it is alone..

That does not look like new ammo. I would take it back to the seller and ask for a refund. It appears to have been improperly stored and then dropped or thrown around. A reputable dealer will take it back even though most say that they will not take ammo back.

Nothing to worry about as long as they chamber. The dents will blow out when you fire them. But they don't look like they are in very good condition. ****** looking brass & green paint is thin. Carry them back.

I would call the manufacturer CS and discuss. They would want to know if "bad" ammo is being sold.

But it could have been in a retailer chain warehouse, or damaged in local handling.

I would call first. I don't know of any of my ammo sources that will take anything back, no matter how well we get along, unless they see damage in shipment (Cabela's has replaced boxes that were crushed by UPS).

I've never used their rifle ammo, but have shot plenty of their handgun ammo without anything looking like these pics. Quality control issues? It's a good idea to open the box for inspection at the checkout counter, before you pay. A gun shop owner who is a friend told me they sometimes find partially empty boxes of ammo that light fingered customers have pilfered, or mixed rounds in boxes that were obviously opened so someone could trade out his old or lesser quality ammo for new and better rounds.

Perfectly normal looking... That stuff is bulk ammo... it will have a few dings and dents in the cases. Go do a google search on American Eagle 5.56 green tip and look at the images... the brass is not always clean and shiny.

It is basically Lake City surplus... same ammo given to the military.

Call the manufacturer and the retailer and tell them about the issue if it really bothers you. I am curious though, how many rounds out of 150 are dented like that? I wouldn't be overly concerned about the paint chips.

Thanks for the replies everyone..

when I first purchased, I went to open the box and take a glance, dealer said NO! do not open it!.,. I just said umm okay?

I still firmly believe it was factory sealed, but that was a bit odd..

I have since done as suggested above IE googled the issue, and I have ran across a lot of conflicting info/thoughts..

Maybe I have some kind of OCD issue, but this kinda thing bugs me a bit.

which may be in part due to some lemon 357 shells I picked up years ago (different dealer but still).. That were suppose to be NEW..
I went to load them, and they would not even go on the chambers (wheel gun).. first, last and ONLY time I had ever an issue with shells and that particular 357..

Long story short.. They were poorly done reloads..

Anyway, I have yet to inspect the rest, but you can be sure I will inspect EVERY single one of them..

from my understanding the brass is annealed per military request to prove such.. but the dents are what has me wondering..
and do you mean normal looking for even being Brand new? (Dents)..
thanks for the reply!

I've never had any issues with boxed American Eagle 5.56 or .223 ammo. It doesn't matter if the brass is dull and not shiny.

I've purchased quite a lot of that from Palmetto in loose 150ct cardboard boxes. I've had a few dents. Usually get an extra round or two in the box.

Yup, looks like all the AE XM855 I have shot. I don't keep mine the cardboard box. I put em in a ammo can with a cut from the box. I tossed a few on the desk.

I've shot a lot of AE, never seen this but to be fair I also never paid attention to this.

I don't know ANY dealer that will let you open boxes of ammo just to check.

Yes, a dent or ding on a few cases is normal for that ammo. It is basically surplus ammo packaged for civilian sale. The X in XM855 or XM193 means that it does not meet milspec standards, but is still good for civilian use.

I have fired worse, if it chambers it will shoot just fine, I don't think you will have a problem with that one. Its not uncommon to find some dinged ammo, if all of them had some dings then I would probably try a different brand, unless it was dirt cheap.

Default That looks like.....

That looks like something that came off my reloading bench.

Probably the best test you could give them is to run them a gauge or the action of the rifle. That one with the shoulder dent looks like trouble to me. Those dents in the sides, no big deal.

Update..

I have since inspected every one of them (150) and only found two that appear like my pic/s above..

What are the chances of picking up the ONE out of Two in the box right off the batt.. LOL..

I have since done some digging around the net etc and have concluded that it is somewhat typical for this ammo to have a few here and there with a dent..
I dont think I'm gonna worry much about it..

thanks for the replies everyone..

I bought a large box of American Eagle green tip, and about 50 rounds were severely dented. But their customer service is top notch. I shipped the damage rounds to them, and they shipped me a full box on return. That box had zero defects.
