Default Sport II Novice

Last year I bought a S&W MP15 Sport II. This is my first AR and to be quite honest I'm not very knowledgeable about it. I bought it through gunbroker.com and I chose one with a quad rail already installed. It has the fixed front sight and flip-up rear sight.

In short, I'm looking for some answers involving mounting optics. The primary use for this firearm will be hunting and target practice. I want to mount a magnified scope for shooting coyotes and prairie dogs but would also like to be able to mount a red dot scope for self defense and close range hunting.

I need to know if removing the front sight is necessary/advised, and basically, what is my best option for outfitting this gun to fulfill my needs.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, I am new to the world of forums in general, so please bear with me haha. Thanks!

It sounds like a 1-4 power scope might do you well. The front sight will ghost out on 4 power so it wont be an issue.

You'll likely get a bevy of solid, helpful responses shortly, but my advice is that you don't want to skimp too much with optics, especially the electronic/red-dot types. You don't necessarilly need to spend HUGE money, but you gotta get well past the tempting $99 range.
Rather than gettting something economical, that is likely also cheap and unreliable, you'd be better off getting proficient with your irons.
I'm more of an old-school KISS/iron sight guy myself,so I can't advise you on the best stuff around right now, but I'm sure some of the guys will weigh in with some specific recommendations.

Yeah, before we can recommend particular optics we kind of need to get a ball park figure of your budget.
Edit: We also need to know how many yards away you plan on hunting at.

The answer to your first question is no, it is not necessary to remove the front sight base to use optics. As has been pointed out, with a magnified optic, 3 to 4x power and higher the front sight will ghost out.

With a red dot, you will need to decide how you would like the optic to co-witness with your sights. This will help you understand that piece...

One other option for you to try to do one sight for two uses would be a red dot and a 3x magnifier. I like Eotechs because of the 1 MOA dot size but they are somewhat pricey. The Vortex Sparc II gets good reviews at a better price. I got my 3X from Primary Arms.
