Default Bushnell AR223 3x9x40mm sope

I put one of these on an AR15 today, mounting it with a Burris QD P.E.P.R. and went to the range ....

Didn't take long to establish a 100m '0' from the bench and then I tested the scope's ballistic reticle with the four mildots below the x hairs.

I cranked the scope up to '9' power (recommended in the destructions), set the parallax for the appropriate range and proceeded to ring the 100-150-200-380-500 m gongs! Holy Cow - it works! And with Chinese ammo.

I usually shoot prone after I've established '0', so I repeated the performance, hitting three for five at 500m. Had I used a sand bag prone, I think I'd have gone 5 for 5.

Then I did some off hand snap shooting at 25m and shot a nice 5 rd circular group of 2-1/2" that printed 2" below POA.

I liked the handiness of the rifle with a red dot (and the ability to co-witness with the BUIS) compared to the weight of the scope and PEPR mount, but it sure was fun to be able to reach out to 500m and hit.

Now I'll have my druthers when it comes to sight options. Life is good.

Just bought a S&W AR-15 and will be looking for a scope in a few months .. The range I shoot is 400 yards so a little shorter then you were shooting .. with these old eyes I probably couldn't hit at that range with iron sights ..

Sounds like you liked it !! ringing steel 1640 feet away is some pretty good shooting ..

A few questions ?? What AR do you have ?? do you know the eye relief for the scope ?? Do your iron sights co-witness with it ?? Thanks !!

You don't co-witness iron sights with magnified optics... you can't use the iron sights while looking through a scope.

My wife and I both have S&W 'Sport' models. She bought hers first, wouldn't let me shoot it so I bought my own!

I don't believe that you can co-witness BUIS with any scope. Red dots, yes.

If I need to do any close & dirty CQB shooting, I'll reinstall the red dot.

For the specs on the Bushnell AR223 scope, there are several video reviews. It is a heavy sucker and with the 40mm objective lens, it looks like a LOT of scope on an AR15. The Burris P.E.P.R. mount adds another 1/2 lb. of weight.

I've kept the original round forestock as I don't want to add any more weight to what was once a lightweight carbine. A couple of my buddies have fully tricked out AR15s and they are heavy weights with all the bells, gongs & whistles, rivalling my Garand.

Even with a variable magnified optic set a 1x co-witness is pretty bad... and as the magnification increases the front sight simply isn't visible.

This is a Bushnell 1-4x I have on one my .22lr AR platforms.

1x

4x

I was trying to come up with the weight on that scope. All I could find is shipping weight of 1.9 pounds. I guess I better think about getting a QR setup for my ATN X-Sight and look for a scope for daytime shooting. That or start working out. With battery, X-Sight, IRI, extended hand guard and close-up laser, I think I'll be adding about 4 pounds to the AR.

Yeah, all the after market goodies you can add to an AR15 really start to pack on the pounds! It all depends on the intended application.

It can get to the point where the rifle becomes so specialized that it loses it's versatility which says one of two things:

- simple is good (KISS principle)

- you NEED another AR15!

I keep eyeballing my wife's 'Sport' model but I'm not that brave. 'Sides, hers is done up in 'Muddy Girl" camo. What would the guys think ... ?
