Question M&P 11511 Barrel

If someone were to want just the barrel that comes stock on the M&P 11511 (Chrome lined, 1:7 twist, 16") does S&W sell said barrel? If it "can" be purchased, what would you expect to pay for it?
The reason I ask is, one of my cousins bought a Sport II a few months ago. He originally wanted the 11511, but, opted for the Sport II for a much lower price. He now wants the 11511 barrel. I have suggested to him to just buy a barrel from BCM (I have heard too many nightmare stories recently about PSA barrels). Does S&W make their own barrels?
BTW, he actually wants my Sport I 5R barrel, but, that isn't going to happen!

Have you tried to contact SW. I think if my memory serves me clear I tried to buy a barrel and they wouldn't sell it so I went and got a black hole weaponry barrel.

They probably outsource their barrels I've tried to find an answer to that. It's probably a "secret". I emailed them once about the issue but they didn't respond for some reason which shocked me because I've always had good CS from them.

I don't think they outsource the barrel. But if he can't get one from S&W, I wouldn't sweat it... just order one from PSA, BCM, or where ever.

Now I do have to ask... why? What is he shooting that the original barrel is not up to task for?

You know, you're probably correct. They probably do have their barrels subbed out. If I were to "guess" to whom, I would think FN. Now, getting them to give us an answer is probably going to be easier to spot an actual UFO.
This seems to go on in other firearms companies as well. When I was doing research on a new store bought AR to purchase, I called Ruger to ask about their AR-556 barrel rifling coating. S&W gave me an answer right off the bat. Ruger was very "secretive" about it. I then got the information from some LGS gunsmiths about Rugers barrel lining (Nitride coated). After about 2 months having my new AR-556 I called Ruger to ask about the UTG hand guard they were now selling. I then wanted to know about the barrel directly from them. They put me on hold and a tech by the name of Ed (Yes, I keep notes) answered my Q?. It is Nitride coated. Why don't they just advertise it? SMH!
Now, back to the Sport II barrel. Besides BCM, what other after market company would sell the same spec'd 11511 barrel?

cyphertext, I think since he could get the Sport II at a lower price, just adding the 11511 barrel would make him think it's the same. He has this fixation that the 1:9 twist, non chrome lined barrel, will not last as well as the 11511 barrel. He is a former MARINE and is always talking about how he "should have" bought a COLT 6920. Personally, I think he has to have the "best" of everything in any category it may be. He does have a little bit of money, but, squeaks when he walks. LOL!

I would tell him the same thing I told you about the BCG in your Ruger... You already bought it, so shoot the snot out of it and replace when (if) needed. If he replaces the barrel just because, it still won't make the Sport the same spec wise as the Colt.

Why don't he just build one if he is gonna change out the barrel anyway? You can find good parts pretty cheap every now and again.

You know, that thought DID enter my mind at one time. I forgot to mention that he is married, but, his wife doesn't have that short of a leash on him.....YET!
He does side work (builds cabinets) to finance his "toys" that he wants/needs. He gives the wife her cut to buy the things she wants, so, she's content.
All of this came up a few times after he bought the Sport II, but, just yesterday, it really became a "NEED NOW" situation.
So, I called S&W this AM and they ONLY sell the upper assembly for $830. They also stated that they make their own barrels. I passed this information onto my cousin and, low and behold, he said he will be calling S&W sometime today (he's at work) and will be ordering an upper assembly! SMFH X100!

I've heard time and time again from various LGS around my area that the 1:8 5r barrels are made by Thompson Center.. Not sure about the other barrels.. Also not sure if that TC makes the 1:8 5r barrels either..

Yes, the 1:8 5R barrels were produced by TC... and S&W is the parent company of Thompson Center.

So they actually do nitride the barrel? That was one of the main reasons I went with the Sport. I thought the barrel on the Ruger wasn't nitrided, but that it was just a bluing? Their own website even calls it a matte black oxide finish.

While I don't want to sound like Disabled is lying, as I certainly believe that he was told this by Ruger, I still have my doubts as it would be a key selling point to advertise. If the barrel is a nitride treated barrel, marketing would be yelling it from the rooftops! It would be a positive selling point for their rifle.

I like the caudle 3r polygonal rifling in BHW barrels and their made completely in house I've owned Wilson Combat barrels and to to be honest I've liked the bhw better for a build. Getting ready to purchase a mp10 just wondering if anyone in this post/thread has any experience with it. Was gonna build one but SW is one of my favorite mfg rather give them my business instead of dpms..etc

I've always thought the chrome lined barrel argument is a little bit overrated. Sure it may last a little bit longer but for civilian use not necessary especially with the new coatings coming out.

I totally agree with you! Why do you think I called them, then, called them again when I wasn't satisfied? If you have a product that has a special selling point, don't you want that selling point listed at the very top? I know I would. I'm starting to have second thoughts........
Anyway, I showed my cousin these replies that everyone has listed about a barrel he can buy from almost anywhere (He's off today, very rarely gets on his desktop, and don't even know what Facebook is). He called several gun stores in the next big town over (50+ miles away) and is seeing about getting a barrel through one of them. How do you convince a 65 year old man, that there ARE other options out there? I'm at my wits end with him and his AR! Other than that, he's a great guy.

I think a chrome lined barrel is good for military use only. There were times that I did mag dumps in Kuwait and the barrel could fry eggs! But, I just kept lock and loading without a fail. Of course, it was a COLT M16A2 rifle, need I say any more?
S&W lines their barrels with the ARMORNITE coating (which is the same as Nitride, Melonite, etc.). Well, that's what I was told when I was doing AR research a few months ago. That, IMHO, is all the every day civilian AR owner needs. Leave the chrome lined barrels on the battle field.

Maybe I should call Ruger and see if my cousin can buy a barrel from Ruger....????? From my readings, a CHF barrel is a more preferred barrel over a cut and reamed barrel. The Ruger barrel might be less than $275.

What I linked is a cold hammer forged chrome lined barrel. It was in response to what the person was looking for in a mil spec barrel. It is on the higher end of price but what you asked for was toughness so that is what I linked.
Honestly I think your relative should just sell the AR they have and buy a Colt 6920 and be done with it. It sounds like that is what they really wanted to begin with.

I suspect if his AR is like most folk's AR's then it will get shot maybe 100 times a year if that and will spend most of its life in a safe - so the debate on what is the best barrel is pretty much null since the barrel that is on it now is most likely way more than adequate for what this person needs.

If I were not in the process of building one right now, and I had the money, I would offer to buy it from him. But, that is a good idea about selling it and getting a Colt 6920. He paid about $500-$525 OTD, so, he might lose money on it. And that, he wouldn't like!

Preferred by who, and why? There are many more precision barrels that are button rifled or cut rifled than hammer forged. The requirements for the mil-spec rifle still call for a button cut barrel.

There are some advantages to a CHF barrel though. If one produces enough barrels to warrant the cost of the machinery, they can turn out a large number of barrels quickly and efficiently, lowering their cost per barrel. This is why Ruger uses CHF barrels... even my American Rimfire rifle has a CHF barrel.

I think a lot of what we read has been put out by marketing departments to make us believe that their product is superior, when in fact, there has always been more than one way to skin a cat.

I bought a 18in hbar 416 SS 1:8 barrel and I've shot a hell of a lot rounds through it. It's still shooting as good as the day I bought it. I've been hearing good things about faxon barrels now. Last barrel I bought I looked at them they had a bunch of pencil barrels but I was skeptical about them.

Ok, the crisis is over! We (His brother and I) talked some sense into his head. He ordered the barrel in the link below from MIDWAY. Thanks for all of the replies, input, and suggestions.

AR-Stoner Barrel AR-15 5.56x45mm NATO M4 Contour 1 7 Twist 16 Chrome
This AR-Stoner carbine barrel features a 5.56x45mm NATO chamber for full compatibility with surplus mil-spec ammunition or commercial 223 Remington ammunition. These barrels are constructed of 4150 chrome moly steel with a threaded muzzle and barrel extension which features M4 Feed Ramps. Additionally, these barrels feature a melonite coating which provides a thinner surface than chrome-lining, so bore friction is reduced for better accuracy. In addition, melonite is harder than chrome-lining providing a longer wear life.
The last sentence in the description is what sold him on this barrel.

cyphertext, I just recently moved back here, after being gone for over 15 years. The town that I live in is very small (less than 400 people) and 98% of the adults are farmers. The average completion grade of school here is 8th grade. You are taught to do (2) things as a child growing up here;
1) Learn to operate ALL John Deere farm type machines.
2) Go do work as a fisherman during certain seasons, then, go back to farming.
Before and after joining the MARINES, my cousin went to college and majored in Psychology. He is currently a social worker. I too have a few semesters of Psychology under my belt (Thanks GI BILL). These were his exact words to me when I moved back here; "I am so glad that I now have someone to talk to that knows what I am saying."
So, if I start telling him about the BCG, he will want something from VOODOO, or, DD, BCM, etc. I want to start him out crawling before he walks. Getting him to settle for the Stoner barrel was hard enough, everything else will fall into place, eventually..........I hope!

He needs to just shoot the snot out of it. When stuff breaks or wears out, upgrade the part then.

I received a call from my cousin Friday, asking me to bring my AR tools and torque wrench. He finally received the barrel. Along with installing the new barrel we also installed a TROY 13" TRX ALPHA rail tube. I have to admit, it's one bad azz looking AR now!
I took pics of the AR before and after, and during the install. My cousin still has my camera at the hunting club and as soon as he returns tomorrow or Tuesday I will post the pics.
