Default MP SPORT II INDEX SLIGHTLY OFF LEAVE IT OR SEND IT IN?

Well, I am a bit disappointed with my new MP Sport II. I have not taken it to the range yet, but the bolt is definitely a bit sticky just as it touches the gas tube and going into full battery. I did the little test where you take the charging handle out, then put bolt in and allow gravity to see if bolt by its own weight will close all the way. For the most part it does and I would be willing to bet if I take this to the range it will work fine.

My only concern is the excessive wear on gas tube if left not aligned and extra wear to gas key.

Anyway, my local gunsmith told me with an A2 front sight post, it will be very hard to get the gas key perfectly aligned without having to replace the barrel.

I was also told that the entry level rifles like the Sport II, I should not expect perfection and as long as it shoots he would probably leave it alone.

If you have a Sport II, is yours also slightly out of alignment? Been told MP quality control sort of ify.

How can you be disappointed with a weapon that you haven't even fired yet?

I would expect (and hope) that S&W would not agree to look at it until it had some rounds put through it.

When I buy a Chevy I don't get upset with Chevrolet when it doesn't drive like a Porsche.

In my opinion the Sport is not the right gun for you. I think you should sell it and get something else.

Shoot it, if it don't run rite return it. As far as a entry level rifle goes, I shot a M16A1 for 15 years, cant say there is a lot of difference with my sport I and II other then full auto and shorter.

I understand the rifle I bought is an "entry level" but at the bare minimum I would expect the gas tube to be perfectly lined up regardless. It should have never left the factory until that was double checked. I called Smith and Wesson and they claim they have never taken a call where somebody complained that it was not properly indexed.

Well I think most people who buy the Sport II do not replace the stock rails so unless they actually take the upper out, the charging handle out, the bolt back in and slide it back and forth to see if there is any binding, they wouldn't know. I am sure the rifle will fire fine but again I feel that the gas tube should be perfectly aligned regardless of the cost.

Pretty sure this guy doesn't even own a Sport. Probably doesn't own any AR-15. Either way, his posts are boring and pointless.

He either needs a life, or he's 15, or that's him in the picture under the bridge.

I've definitely concluded he's trolling. If perfect gas tube alignment was REALLY important to him - he'd have been sure to check it in the store before he accepted delivery.

In another post he said I did good "detective work" when I pointed out a number of conflicting things he posted. That was child's play....I just read his posts.

What took some detective work was using Google to find other gun forums postings by someone named "marathonrunner" where the poster swooped in and dropped bombs....and caused a ruckus.

No you are wrong. I am not trolling. I bought this from an online dealer and had it FFL transfer so no I was not able to first inspect it. But lesson learned, I may pay about $100 more if I buy from a local gun dealer, but at least I will be able to examine it. I paid $450 which included the store's transfer fee and had I bought this from Cabalas, I would have paid $700 for the same rifle plus tax

If I didn't own a Sport I wouldn't be commenting on it. It is my first MP product I own rifle wise, I do own their Shields which are good no complaints. But I again am not used to buying the entry level stuff but the only reason I bought the sport was to make it a beater gun.

No I did not buy from Cabalas as they are much higher. I bought it from an online seller. There are many online sellers selling for $499. and I meant $550 not $450. The FFL dealer charges $50 for the transfer fee.

My original question was regarding the indexing on the gas block being slightly off and whether or not anybody else who owns a Sport II would be peeved. So far everybody here has been more interested in bashing me than helping me. Hence, I am not going to ask anymore questions on this site realizing the kind of hazing that exists.

It just seems that in the very short time I have been here, you have not liked a lot of things about your Sport II.. to the point to where from my point of view anyway, I don't understand why you have not just returned it, and went with something else.. already..

Anyway, if it were me, I would have lubed things up a bit, and went and fired it, before reporting on what I suspect might-maybe be an issue?..

And also, FWIW, no matter what you buy (absolute TOP end, or bottom), sometimes things do have an issue right out of the box.. it just happens now and then with mass production products....

I call BS... I've purchased many firearms online and when I go to my FFL to pick it up, we open the box and inspect the firearm. You can refuse the firearm at that point in time.

Not to mention, they also inspect the riffle directly to confirm the numbers on it, to put on your paper work etc..

Well around here anyway.. They make SURE the actual numbers on the weapon match etc..

I didn't know one was allowed to open the box and then flat out refuse to purchase as it is most stores policies all firearm sales are final and the store I bought it from already charged my credit card. But this information is good to know for future reference

Your FFL would send it back as refused... the transaction is not complete until you accept the firearm and do the paperwork.

You accept it, do paperwork, then the sale is final... no paperwork, no sale.

The reason I was critical of my own purchase was due to two of my friends totally ripping and making fun of me for buying an "entry level" AR15.

And speaking of "issues right out of the box," when I purchased not one but 2 Colt LE6940's(this was the big scare and I got gouged!), both Colt's had rust inside the chrome lined chamber! it was in the recessed area where the lugs are. I was really upset about that and after sending both uppers to Colt, not only complaining about rust, I also did not like how there were dings and light abrasions on many places of the guns. I was demanding they replace both uppers as an entire unit to which they did. Kudos to them

Anyway, I read on another forum, they said to remove the bolt Carrier and bolt, and then just run the carrier alone and tip the receiver 45 degrees and if the gas tube is aligned properly, it should slide in smoothly with no hesitation or clicks. Mine just passed so at this point I am pretty much convinced my gas tube is perfectly aligned.

The reason I thought it was not aligned perfectly was because my Windham SRC's which is not "duty proven" but still a well made and great quality, both my bolts slide in and out like buttery but I also shot like 100 rounds through them where the MP Sport II I have yet to take her to the range.

I am now just waiting for my H3 Buffer tube before I go to the range. I now got the ACS rear butt stock, UTG pro Slim 15" handguard, Magpul grip. I think the H3 will make this much softer recoil.

anyway my Sport II really does look totally cool and I now have something i can go plink with. the reason my other AR15's just sit and collect dust in my safe is because I spent way too much money upgrading. My one Windham SRC, I had Windham Weaponry from the factory install a heavy barrel, a Midwest Free Float, I got the eotech combo xps-2 holographic sights, I got a geisslie SSA-E, an ACS rear but stock, shoot I got probably $4200 into it. So after spending that much, I dont' think a lot of folks would want to shoot the **** out of that and why I bought the SPort II.

Exclamation

Every firearm company that sells a new firearm, be it an internet vendor, or, a LGS, they specifically state in writing upon your purchase to inspect the firearm for any problems, etc. You HAVE the right to refuse said firearm upon inspection if you find any discrepancy with it. I have only refused a couple of firearms, but, the makers of the firearms made it good.
Marathonrunner, can you please post pics of your Sport II? Also, can you please post pics of the gas tube where you claim it is misaligned?

Get new friends. My friends and I enjoy anything gun, be it a $200 Hi-Point to a $15,000 Perazzi over/under.

Stop. Go to the range before you change another thing. Verify the rifle works in stock form, before you make changes.

See my note above about over and under shotguns... most of the guys I hunt with have more than that in their shotguns that they take to the field to hunt with. I'm the guy sporting the cheap Berettas on hunts. No reason to have it if you aren't going to shoot it.

I haven't set up the software to upload any pics yet but it totally looks like a Tier1 rifle. My friends keep harping that I can add all the accessories I still bought a substandard rifle. Well until I go to the range I will save final judgement. I am confident my Sport II will work perfectly. I took it home, cleaned it, lubed, shinned up the receiver, and it looks just as good as the Tier1's.

I think Smith and Wesson should ship this rifle in a hard plastic case like Windham does. Shipping it in a cheap cardboard box gives the appearance of ify quality. And as mentioned in other threads I started, Smith and Wesson should use something like Hopps 9 and make it shiny and new. When I took mine out of the box, it looked like someone sprayed it with brake clean, everything was dull and dehyrdated. The delta ring was off canter as the handguards did not sit flush. I replaced them with real handguards so problem solved.

As far as gas tube, after doing the test from another forum, it seems fine. Yes my drop in handguard is oh ever so slightly canted, as long as the rifle works not going to sweat it.

No reason to have it if you aren't going to shoot it.

lol...well I can't lose my friends because we have been friends since college. However, the reason he rips on me is because I told him what a dummy he was for buying the Century C39V2 which I amnot a fan of Century firearms, however the one AK century has made is a very high quality AK except the cast bolt is known to mushroom and I talk a lot of trash so this is payback for him

yes I agree I should go to the range first before installing the H3 buffer, but also bought the Sig Sauer P320 Conversion Kit(sub compact 9mm) and waiting for that so I can then kill two birds with one stone. By the way, the P320 is a fabulous pistol. Not the greatest trigger and the frame seems a bit cheap, but it shoots very well and low recoil

Gosh I know two people that have spent $10,000 on a fancy shotgun and to me that is insane. I'd be willing to bet he could have bought one for about $2000 and then the rest of the 8K he could have literally had a full arsonal. Why spend 10K on just one gun? I could have gotten a Noveske AR15 which is probably one of the best you can get, but for $3700 to $4300 for a Noveske, as good as that rifle is, that is way too much for a battle rifle with iron sights and a barrel that is designed to run all day. Yes I did spend about that much on a Windham, but I also got lots of cool stuff on it like optics, holographic sites, butt stock, midwest freefloat etc..

Man, my BS detector is pegged so far into the RED, I can actually smell it coming through my laptop screen. Every time you are asked a Q?, or, someone wants to see pics, you have some kind of excuse. Borrow a cell phone to take pics. Go to a friends house to login to your account on their PC. As much money as you have to spend on all these rifles and your bike, you must have a good job. Use some of that money to get us pics of your Sport II and all of your other rifles. Or, are you out of your rabid mind and ACTUALLY have Monopoly money? SMH!

OK for one, I rarely post any pics of my stuff. why? Because basically all AR15's look exactly the same and to be quite frank I don't think anybody really cares. But I will try to get pics uploaded but it is not my number one priority. however, I did have a good pic of my literbike and my tribike. Both was taken with a 105mm portrait lens to crop out as much space as possible. When I have the time, I will try to capture some nice photos of my Sport II.

That motorcycle is a 2008 CBR1000RR and yes I did put over 15K miles on it in one year, but I ended up selling it back to the dealer that I bought it from. Bought it brand new for $7500 which Honda had some great incentives, but the reason Honda sold so cheap was because the bike had faulty oil rings but never admitted there was a problem. AT the time of purchase I had no idea my CBR would consume over 1qt of oil in less than 1000 miles. It also had a faulty gas tank weld and was leaking, but again Honda denied there was a problem even after the dealer confirmed it was leaking, they denied my warranty claim.

My Triathalon bike, yes I do ride that a lot but last year I got a pinch flat going around a corner and my bike slid out from under me. I was horrified that it was going to be in pieces but luckily the only damage was a tiny scrape on the handlebar. After that I no longer ride that on a regular basis so bought a cheaper Cannondale road bike just to ride around

OK here I used tinypicks but it is so small. How do you enlarge it?

Anyway, love this bike!

Does this mean that if my Sport does not pass the bolt plunk test, even after 1500 trouble free rounds and most groups MOA or better that I should return it to S&W?
Stop worrying, shoot the rifle and enjoy it. If it fails you, then send it back.
And, I still cant figure out why my entry level Sport seems to outshoot nearly everything Ive been seeing at my ranges. Not kidding.

Enough bickering and bicycles.

Check that the barrel nut is indexed properly with the gas key so that the gas tube is going through a groove in the barrel nut teeth absent pushing the tube to one side of the other
