Have not had a rifle in many years, but decided to get back into that aspect of sport.

Got the Sport II for $500 ( decent for my market & I am happy), but have a question please.

The "takedown pin" (the one closest to the buffer tube) is easy to push out - great for initial cleaning. BUT, it seems to want to walk itself out, if I am describing that correctly.

After initial cleaning, I was "charging the handle" several times to see if everything seemed correct. After pulling the handle back 4 to 5 times the pin would be almost all the way out?

Not correct - no?

Hope I described it clearly and was curious on corrective feedback.

No, the pin should not be "walking" out after 4 or 5 pulls on bolt. It is something you could fix yourself if you are so inclined or either take it back to the store or call S&W customer service.

I should not be walking out as you describe and I would call S&W customer service and they should either clear up the problem or email a shipper to your email to send it in for repair.

When you pull on it, will it come all the way out? I mean, completely out of the receiver. It should be captured and there should be a detent pin that keeps it from walking out at all. I suspect either the detent pin or spring or both are missing.

No, it stays captured, but reaches (as best I can tell) the limit of its travel.

After reviewing different videos on the subject, it appears the Detent spring & pin are under the plate that is secured to the tube by the "castlenut"?

If so, I do not want to attempt to investigate. I am taking it back to dealer on Tuesday and go from there.

IF in the meantime the Heathen Hordes attack the house in the next few days, I believe the weapon would fire. Just might have to put a smidgen of Made in the USA duct tape to keep the pin from walking out! 😳

The inner channel of that pin could be milled too far to the right or something allowing extra play in it. Only reason I would think that is because you said it reaches its limit.

Yes sounds like maybe the spring/detent are missing. Send it back if you don't want to fiddle with it. Is your castle nut staked? If not, that disassembly is pretty easy....just sayin.

See the divots or holes at either end of the channel? The retaining pin should go into the hole closest to the head when the pin is fully seated. This will prevent the pin from "walking" out.

Because your pin is captured, there has to be a pin in there. But, if there's no spring putting pressure on that pin, it might not be pressing into the hole. That would allow it to walk out.

Since this is a new rifle, you're right to take it back to the dealer. Conversely, you could send it to S&W. They will give you a free shipping label and return it to your door in about 2 weeks.

Hey.. MANY years ago I actually done that, well used Tape on a riffle anyway.. LOL

The barrel band on an old M1 Carbine I have broke..
at the time it was my only semi auto riffle, So I cut about a 3/4in wide strip of glossy paper as a buffer, then wrapped about 8 rounds of electrical tape on it tight as I could, all complimented with a thick heavy duty Zip strip on top, till I could get a replacement. LOL

and yeah, I actually shot it like that a few times held great..

I had that problem one time on the pivot pin. Turns out the spring was weak, and I didn't have a spare one. I fixed it by putting a spare detent in the hole under the spring and re-installed the detent and pin. Don't know if it will work in your application, but might be worth a try.
